[Trump Administration] Actually About Ethics in Email Administration

(Thread title courtesy of moniker)

You know the drill. Here are the rules and guidelines:

- Be excellent to each other
- No discussion of the election. Hillary and Bernie ate almost certainly not relevant to this thread.
- Being concerned is fine. Being alarmist is not. Comments such as "We're all going to die" are not productive.
- Please stop discussing who would win in a nuclear war.
- Just a suggestion, but maybe consider not posting news stories from every random alt-news site you see. A lot of them are full of shit.
- In-depth discussion of the Muslim ban might be better suited for the Muslim ban thread.
- There will be NO ENDORSEMENT OF VIOLENCE OR ILLEGAL ACTIVITY in here. This is not negotiable and will be met with immediate banning.

Have fun!

So Trump rages and hangs up on Australian PM. Truly a masterful negotiator. That's how he handles a friendly nation. Can't wait to see his negotiating skills with less friendly countries.

I suspect this was a case of four factors coming together to tick off Trump perfectly.
    1) Turnbull's a coward, and terribly likely to meekly accept Trump's bullying in the hopes that it's bluster. The perfect prey for an egomaniac.
    2) The refugee deal was developed under Obama, with Trump loathing anything or anyone to do with the previous government. He wants a clean slate, to Do Things His Way.
    3) The US has Australia over a barrel; Turnbull's extremely weak politically, and we have no backup plan for the refugees - successive government have tried and failed to get them off our hands.
    4) Trump doesn't give a shit about Australia. To him, we might as well not exist.

Trump held all the cards, and knew he'd have no pushback, so he flagantly bullied Turnbull while going on an ego trip. It's schoolyard antics.

Thank God that Australia's so unimportant he won't kick off a war with us.

He'd gain points on the left (but his party couldn't give two shits about that), and probably the moderate right. But he'd perhaps lose the rabid anti-Islamic loony right, who for some reason they've been courting, and who seem to be pro-trump.

Numbers wise, what he'll do probably depends on whether they think theyve got the center locked down.

He'd mostly lose. He's already said that it is not his job to comment on US policy, and he's refused to comment so far on the phone call. He still has hope that the US will take some of the refugees off his hands. If he came out strong against Trump then he'd lose any chance of that happening. He's caught between a rock and a hard place and his only hope is in Trump's capriciousness.

On Iran. I took a two week bus trip there a few years ago, and have paid some attention to the country since. It means I know nothing about the country, but feel like I know something.

I guarantee you Trump's election and especially any comments about war with Iran have already massively boosted the hardliners and conservatives in Iran.

I don't know enough about Iranian politics to predict how much that will matter. The hardliners lost a lot of credibilty from their response to the Green Movement in the eyes of the general populace, I think.

They've been on this track since 9/11, and probably since well before a brief interlude following Oklahoma City. Remember the 2009 DHS report on white terrorists and how it upset many white people?

In 2009, shortly after the election of Barack Obama, a Department of Homeland Security intelligence study, written in coordination with the FBI, warned of the “resurgence” of right-wing extremism. “Right-wing extremists have capitalized on the election of the first African-American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal through propaganda,” the report noted, singling out “disgruntled military veterans” as likely targets of recruitment. “Right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”

The report concluded that “lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent right-wing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.” Released just ahead of nationwide Tea Party protests, the report caused an uproar among conservatives, who were particularly angered by the suggestion that veterans might be implicated, and by the broad brush with which the report seemed to paint a range of right-wing groups.

Faced with mounting criticism, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano disavowed the document and apologized to veterans. The agency’s unit investigating right-wing extremism was largely dismantled and the report’s lead investigator was pushed out. “They stopped doing intel on that, and that was that,” Heidi Beirich, who leads the Southern Poverty Law Center’s tracking of extremist groups, told The Intercept. “The FBI in theory investigates right-wing terrorism and right-wing extremism, but they have limited resources. The loss of that unit was a loss for a lot of people who did this kind of work.”

For me, the biggest fear is federal law enforcement compromised by white supremacists followed by the feds ignoring similar takeovers at the local, state, and county level. Especially sheriff's offices.

There is nothing below the surface with that man (which you'd intuitively think would be a political liability, and yet...).

If you're a woman who has to interact with the White House on a semi-regular basis, expect to be sexually harassed / groped. If you're a minority in the same position, expect to be treated as a second class citizen even if you've got in as 'one of the good ones'.

People will quibble with this, even at this late date. I've seen "When you're a star, they let you do it" used as a defense that it's consensual behavior.

They ignore the rest of the tape where he says he can't help himself. And he knows the people he can't help himself with are in a position where 'making a fuss' over him getting touchy feely would be disadvantageous. It's on fucking camera. After he talks about it. Piece. Of. Shit.

it's exhausting. Hostility towards Iran will do nothing but empower hardliners. It's so upsetting and pointless. There's more reason to invade fucking turkey than Iran. It's madness, and without precedent. People are saying it would be like Vietnam, while that's a good guess, we simply don't know. I don't think the average right wing American knows the difference between Iran and Iraq, Iran isn't some tin pot dictatorship, you are looking at long term American deaths in the 100,000+ range if you include an occupation, and at least a million Iranians dead.

It would also utterly destabilise the region, I hope you liked ISIS because there'll be ten groups like them and they'll be larger than ever.

There's just no way that an invasion of Iran doesn't end America as a global power.
