Hey y'all? You guys like Diablo? How about
ridiculously huge skill trees? How about... An absurdly gothy setting? If you're into that, then maybe Path of Exile is for you.
Also, it's free, and from what I've played, is remarkably good and non-exploitative with the microtransactions. Most of the microtransactions are purely cosmetic, and the ones that aren't are stuff like stash tabs or guild things. And this game is supported and updated constantly - not only is it a full 4-act game, with six (?) classes and a whole mess of other things, but they just announced a new expansion that will essentially
more than double the size of the game.
The way skills work is interesting too - you get a skill point in every level, but that goes to a (absurdly enormous) passive skill tree that gives you bonuses to statistics and other passives like attack speed or overall damage. The actual skills you get are acquired through skill gems that you socket into your items. These skills vary from stuff like lightning bolt, to enhanced melee attacks, and so on. There are even modifier skill gems that will change the way a skill actually works - increasing damage, or number of projectiles, or so on. It's actually a fairly neat system.
Additionally, since the massive skill tree is there for all classes, you could concievably eventually branch out into other classes' skill trees - everyone starts in a different spot but eventually with enough points you can move over to other spots.
Oh, the story? Well, you're a person who's apparently pissed off the presumably evil totalitarian government so they shipped you off to this shitty country where everything sucks all the time. And you want to go back and get revenge on them (which apparently is something you'll be doing in the big expansion). I'm guessing you do!
Anyway, the main purpose of this thread is because these kinds of games are always way more fun when playing with other people. So let's get together and play - maybe form a guild or something, I dunno. It costs literally no money to try!
Anyone that has more experience in the game than I do should feel free to suggest things to add to this OP.

Also if anyone has any screenshots of the game or particularly cool images to add to the OP, let me know, because I don't really have much access to image hosting at work right now.
I can't decide what I want to play though and the free form nature of character progression/building is cool but also incredibly difficult to navigate than if it just had set list of spells you get at each level or whatever but that would be too much hand holding
I'll probably end up playing a witch because pet classes are home and the ranger doesn't get any cool forest animals and the shadow's traps and stuff are just traps not actual turrets like I want them to be
My plan was to give this another shot now because I beat this season of diablo 3 and the next season looks too annoying to bother with
Then I remembered I have other games I should finish before getting on another loot treadmill
I'll probably play a little here and there but I'm not gonna dive in deep for a while

Oh hey, sorry, got distracted with YouTube and other threads.
I don't actually play this that much, tbh. I'll usually go hard on a league for like the first two or three weeks then drop off, and come back irregularly before the end. I definitely try to keep up with it when I'm not playing though. I'm hoping to be more consistent this league, since I finally have a pc that can run this at a consistent 60 FPS instead of an inconsistent 25.
As for OP stuff, hm. You should probably link the game's forums, since that's where a majority of the build guides and news are. Also, http://poe.trade/ is the game's main trading marketplace (no WWW or it won't work). You can search for any item in any league, even down to specific stats, etc. It's complex but works well when you get to it.
Though it's outdated, ZiggyD (the game's biggest YouTuber/streamer) did a playthrough guide of the first part of the game, with a bit of a build guide and general info for new players, called the Path of Exile Survival Guide (I'm linking episode 1 because he doesn't have a playlist for it):

I'm hoping he gets back to it or makes a new one when the expansion hits. There's a lot of helpful YTers for this game, like ZiggyD and LiftingNerdBro.
Also, check out the game's official wiki, lots of info for every skill, map, item, etc.
Yeah, I've played two minion witches and they were a lot of fun. Most people just used zombies and skeletons with other spells, but I used every single summon I could get my hands on. I wanted to fill the screen with minions! Here's a few random screenshots I've taken of the game whilst playing:
It is!
to be fair, he did post a bunch of random OOC shots, but yeah the game is rather complex. All that complexity leads to some really cool loot and build possibilities though.
like it makes more sense once you realize it's all passives, and every class starts in a different part of it
but even then
I'm currently playing a big beefy fella. I forget the name of the class. Marauder? He's fun. Entirely strength-based though, so I can really only use the red skillstones most of the time.
Oh, also, GGG put out the Development Manifesto for the next patch: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1837149
Lots of changes to the passive tree and various weapon types incoming, along with some big nerfs to Blade Flurry, Vaal Haste, and Vaal Discipline.
there is a chance i could pick this up
1 playthrough of 10 acts. Most likely, based on how they do the alternative path races like Descent Champions and Endless Ledge, at a certain point in the story the resistance penalties from the old difficulties will kick in.
This one doesn't do it to me, but for some reason Grim Dawn started to do that.
These are optional tasks that award you with exclusive cosmetics for finishing 12, 24, and 36 of them, plus bonus hideout customizations on the 19th challenge completed and every 3 after that.
They look tough this time, with a lot of them looking pretty reliant on RNG and well-crafted runestones, like the ones involving essence monsters and spirits. Lot of grinding to do!
