Hey y'all.

Let's have a nice playthrough of Witcher 3 together. Won't that be fun? I think it'll be fun.
Is there a schedule?
Nah, not for this one. Witcher 3's too god damn big for a schedule. Take it at your own pace, talk about any part you like. Mind your spoilers!
But I've never played a Witcher game before!
That's OK. Witcher 3 is really good as a standalone title. You don't need the old games at all! You don't need the books either (though I like them and they help to illustrate certain character relationships)
How do I mark spoilers?
I like to use the name of a related quest! Those are usually pretty good, and most spoilers will involve quests, so it's a good system.
There's some subject matter I sure don't like. Do I need to know anything going into this?
I tell you what, Witcher 3's got some real shit in it. It's full of murder and betrayal and bad empires and all sorts of stuff. There are, however, two particular quests that I think merit a big old
--CONTENT WARNING--
Get Junior (CW: gendered violence, desecration of corpses)
Get Junior includes a scene where the titular character is surrounded by dead sex workers that he has murdered and more or less decorated with.
Carnal Sins (CW: gender violence, serial killers)
Priscilla is attacked by a serial killer, and though she survives her throat is burned by acid and she's rendered unable to talk. In tracking down the killer, who has struck and killed multiple men and women throughout the city, Geralt ends up confronting a corrupt priest, who he walks in on apparently about to torture a sex worker with a hot iron.
Those are the biggest ones and the ones that bother people most consistently, I think.
Can we have shipping arguments in here?

Did you see this Nilfgaard shit because I did not
I don't know what I'm going to do with my life afterwards.
Maybe open a bar, tell everybody that comes in my story, pass quietly in the night...
I tried to use the script merger, and I followed all the instructions, but it just seemed to cause even more script errors to pop up. Might try it again, I guess
Steam // Secret Satan
Steam // Secret Satan
That quest is its own reward I reckon
Of course we are

They're good games, Grom.
He's not worth it
I loved Dijkstra's chewing out of Geralt after that. That whole conversation with him fills that character out beautifully. Maybe my next favourite character next to the baron? Or Johnny I guess, I love that little fucker.
I only really checked in on it a little bit when it first launched, I went "this is really cool but super buggy"
I'm waiting on a Steam release, I think
Yeeeah
Dijkstra is such a huge piece of shit, but it's clear that he's a spymaster at least partially because he's so personable. They play that angle up a lot every time he's on screen. You really feel like he's your buddy, even though he's decidedly not.
Also he ships Geralt and Triss super hard for whatever reason
I like Dijkstra and he's charming but I don't assume for a moment the guy does anything that doesn't benefit himself and/or Redania

You will get way, way more Yennefer for the rest of the game once you go to Skellige
Should I totally restart or just jump right back in? When should I do the DLCs?
You can go to Skellege whenever! Though it's true, the way people focus on the quests means most people wait until they're done the main quests in Novigrad.
There's a slight expectation that the player know the books. Or at least it's written in a way so that book readers have more of an impetus to choose Yen compared to Triss.
From an ardent Yen fan I'd say CDPR kind of set it up like a trap? You see Geralt's dream with Yen and Ciri at the start of the game, which the game notes never actually happened. But then when you first meet Yen at the start of the game she's cold and somewhat confrontational and in work mode. Geralt has to hang on and not mess up like he did with Triss in the past

I forgot
Based on what I remember of her response it's probably the same if you mess up one item vs. coming in your full ass-whooping gear, so I was like "Damn girl I just fouled up one thing does that make me a scrub" and the answer was yes
because I did
and did anyone on the entire fucking planet
At the most extreme degree of animosity they're like a married couple who've gone through an extended separation. There's a sense of comfortable familiarity there, people who knew each other and lived together for decades, and also the most important thing in their life is their (adopted) child. Even if they decide they can't be together, they put Ciri first in everything, and it's good
Beyond anything else in the whole game, Geralt and Yennefer's relationship, the way they relate to each other even when they're not talking to each other, is the best-written bit for me. They represent a mature relationship of the kind that video games almost never bother to deal with
I know we spotted one kid and the name matched, but it was a little hard to confirm because the kids all look pretty similar. But glad to hear there's also another confirmation that that happened.

I am guessing they were under a spell, much like Gran was
On top of that her continuing the strategy of not keeping Geralt in the loop/not being straight and honest with him shows that she either doesn't trust him which there is no reason for or doesn't respect him enough to take his thoughts and feelings into consideration when she's making decisions that impact the both of them and Ciri. Either way it's a strong dealbreaker wrt to how I played Geralt.
Like things change and Geralt had to both start over from nothing, had tons of crazy world altering shenanigans to deal with during that time which was 5 full dang years without a single word. If you can't get past a stupid hangup that has zero justification or change your pattern of not treating the partner you want as an equal then there's nothing much to discuss.
God forbid he's with someone who cares for him and treats him with respect and understanding.
Team Triss yo
Yen
Regarding being straight and honest with Geralt, though, you're incorrect--she doesn't always explain her actions but she is honest when she does explain. She lays out her reasons for withholding information too--usually because Geralt/the druids/the other Witchers will freak out. And when they find out, they do. :P Yes, she is headstrong and doesn't like consulting with people about her choices, that much is true. Each outlandish plan of hers works, however, despite everyone else's concerns.
Oh, and her intentions are always completely on the level, namely, to find and protect Ciri.

If memory serves, there is, but less so than having Geralt finish him there and then.
