DC revealed its upcoming event, Dark Nights, today from the entire creative team of Snyder's Batman run.
Details remain scarce but it sounds like it is going to involve alternate realities where shit went bad. Like, "what if the Justice League lost their first fight against Darkseid" invading or overlapping with the main world. Despite the dark subject matter, Snyder insists the book will be in line with the more hopeful time of rebirth and that "it is not a grim comic". He also promises dinosaurs and laser beams.
I'm pretty excited! Snyder has been fuckin' killing it with All-Star and he says this has been brewing since he took over Batman 6 years ago.
Hawkman is heavily involved, with nth metal being a major component in the story.
The core cast is the Justice League but other heroes will be featured, Mr. Terrific was mentioned as one.
Lots of new and returning characters, Snyder hopes to have the new ones stick around.
It's 6 issues, monthly, starting in August. The art will be divided between Capullo, JRJR and Andy Kubert, with the latter two being used for specific time periods that the story features.
Snyder says the core mystery behind the book is "the first mystery Batman does not want to solve."
The War of Jokes and Riddles is the next big Batman arc, taking place in the second year of Bruce's Batman career. It has the Joker and Riddler warring over who gets to kill the Bat, with other villains taking sides in the process. 8 parts, by Tom King and Mikel Janin
Looks neat, and don't get me wrong, Batman is cool and makes $$$, but I kinda wish we were getting some non Batman news.
While Batman is on the cover, Dark Nights is apparently not an entirely Batman event. He is one of the lead characters but it is a DCU spanning thing

i was mid-saying something about secret six when the last thread closed but now i can't remember it
anyhow, i finished up the first trade (catman version) and it was fantastic all the way through, really looking forward to where it goes next
it really straddled the line of... protag-inizing the six in a nice way, representing several different interpretations of self-interest that don't make the team feel like "just" a bunch of anti-heroes and keeping them nasty, but also a crew you still want to root for (even though individual members may make badguy decisions that occasionally clash (or don't) in dramatic ways)

You're in for a good ride with that book, Theo. One of my favorite DC runs.

If I were to write a new Secret Six series, it would be more in tone with that run than the New 52 one and would feature Scandal Savage and Nyssa al Ghul (inspired by her Arrow character) in a sort of Romeo and Juliet romance against their immortal fathers

I love this idea. Who would your remaining four be?

Hmm. Deadshot is too tied to Suicide Squad these days. Definitely Catman and Porcelain (from the latest series). I'd have to think on the last two

It was revealed in Darkseid War that Snyder's Joker, Killing Joke Joker, and Golden Age Joker are all different people.
It's something Johns will explain when he does his big Watchmen story.
Was that the payoff for Batman asking what the Joker's real name is?
Yep.

I am completely lost.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Got my hands on the first volume of the Flintstones. This is good reading and Steve Pugh's art is wonderful. Can't help using John Goodman's voice in my head for Fred's dialogue.

Why does it have to be set in the past?
Because it's already been mentioned of having happened. Riddler mentioned it in a recent Batman issue
Plus, sometimes it's nice to have stories set in the past

Okay, that makes sense. I still think it's silly for it to be some 8-part event when the outcome is set. It's one thing to say, "Of course these characters won't die--it's comic books" versus, "Of course these characters won't die--they have to be alive in the present-day."
If it was a compact 2-3-part story I think I'd have less of a problem with it.

You can provide tension to a narrative without the threat of death.

As Blank said, it's not an event. It's just the main Batman book that ships twice a month.
It's not really different from Zero Year, but that was monthly and took like 8 months (and was amazing)

But when the story hook is "Who gets to kill Batman?" Maybe not the threat of death, but it's still a theme.
But as I haven't read any DC since early new 52, I'll just stick to mocking the movies.

you can't seen them combine yet
"What were you thinking, Mr. Wayne?"
"I'm thinkin', big fucking axes"

With that lineup it looks like you still need a heavy/monster-man and a pervert, in the general taxonomy of Secret Six lineups.
Okay so Bride (of Frankenstein) and The Creeper to finish out the lineup
Detective Chimp
Blue Devil
Frankenstein
Zatanna
Nightshade
Jim Corrigan
Klarion
Throw Dr. Fate in there every once in a blue moon.
Why does it have to be set in the past?
The whole 3 Jokers thing, and all.
That's all we know right now

Harley says "The Gotham City Sirens; you, me, Kate, and Babs"
Wonder if this means Batgirl will be returning (as DLC?) with Batwoman as a premium skin (or vice versa)
