Swapping out the hard drive in my PS3 - Use the Backup or the Data transfer option?
So I have this 120 GB SSD doing nothing after a PC upgrade and since my PS3 is in need for more space doing a hard drive swap is obvious. But I am somewhat confused on exactly how to do this.
In the system menu on the PS3 there is a backup option which supposedly lets me backup everything except trophies and DRM protected files (I hope the later refers to music/video and not games bought on-line), so initially I thought that was the way to go. However in the same menu there is also a Data transfer option which is described as the one to use if moving to a different PS3, so is that the option to use since I am swapping out the hard drive?

You want to use the backup option (which exists for this very purpose.) The data transfer option is for when you need to move data to another physical PS3, as the key for the new machine will not match the old one.
Thank you - backup it is then. I guess I was overthinking and should just have gotten on with it.
