Just saying as someone who lives in the midwest and is a large and broad shouldered man it is often assumed that I am into sports by strangers and when asked about it I tend to change the subject because coming clean in public still occasionally leads to ridicule at worst or awkward silence at best.
Not saying that the solution is to ridicule "the jocks" for being into sports or whatever but sometimes it still does feel really like being judged for absolutely no reason and every time someone says something akin to "sportsball" doesn't necessarily mean they are judging you right back for being into whatever sport you are into.
That said it is a hacky joke but if you criticized everyone for making hacky jokes you wouldn't have as many dad joke and puns so ...
It's not that it's hacky, it's that it's petulant and condescending. Dad jokes may be hacky but they're also pure and innocent (for good reason, you're supposed to tell them to kids!)
Like, that shit doesn't just sound like blowing off steam it sounds immature and smug and that's not a good look, regardless of your motivation for it.
Making fun of people liking a specific thing is real fuxking dumb and people making fun of sports but still pay attention to sports to know things like today is draft day is way worse

its more this specific way of dismissing something by 'cleverly' getting its name wrong
It's funny because I felt like I saw a lot of pushback against that kind of dismissive talk about sports the past super bowl, which is uniformly the worst time for Nerds Being Superior About Disliking Sports, Haha What's A Superb Owl????

"drumpfty", for example, also drives me up a wall
I disagree that is all that smug or dismissive.
Although I agree about the drumph thing, but that is misnaming an actual person and not self deprecating in the way I usually think of the sportsball thing.
also, in general, noone ever says "I don't like sportsball"
They say
"Woo sportsball take the hoopgoal to the ballfield yeah!"
Its
Super irritating
Exactly. It's knowing enough to make fun of the specific things by acting like an idiot who doesn't know them. Like that tweet is obnoxious because knows that today is draft day. It's a specific knowing the material but acting like an idiot ass that's FAR more irritating than not knowing about and not caring.

It is absolutely smug and dismissive. It's like people who take pleasure in saying they don't watch television. It's an elitist thing

I do think there could be a nuance on this that hype based marketing and culture does make a lot of event based stuff super exhausting.

I feel like once "nerdy" hobbies became normalized, the idea that people had to stay in one camp sort of instantly evaporated.
I don't watch sports because I value my extremely valuable and excellent time, please admire me as I pedal away

Again I toot the horn of the shutdown fullcast.
Because they just go balls deep on making fun of the stupid sport that they love. Because they recognize that it is so dumb and love it anyway.
And then make fun of it because it is, in fact, so dumb.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Oh there's absolutely a point to be made about how obnoxious the ubiquity of and presumed default interest in things like draft day is.
The way to make a point like that is not to disingenuously "misunderstand" the concept. That doesn't actually make any points it's just the equivalent of repeating what someone says in a bad baby voice during an argument.
I do think there could be a nuance on this that hype based marketing and culture does make a lot of event based stuff super exhausting.
Sure, but that's a nuance that isn't in the tweet or jokes people make. There's certainly a critique to be made, but it can be made without being an irritating elitist, see the shutdown full cast critiquing the draft

I guess!
But like I've never done it to feel superior to anyone, just to express exasperation over the exhausting cycle or being a non sports fan living in the heart of College Football Rivalry battleground.
I'm not going to begrudge people for liking sports, I do begrudge people for being assholes to me about it.
But like I've never made a joke about it in an attempt to make other people feel bad.
An essential question to ask whenever you just blast out an unsolicited opinion like that is "does anybody actually need to hear what I think about this"

I've NEVER seen sportsball used "self-deprecatingly"
Its always used as an attack on people who enjoy it
I feel like once "nerdy" hobbies became normalized, the idea that people had to stay in one camp sort of instantly evaporated.
I agree fully.
But it isn't about camps for me, I just don't like sports and find them impenetrable to learn about and interminable to watch.
But when it comes time for Ohio State and Michigan to play their game? I mostly stay home just to not have to keep getting asked which team I'm rooting for.

Unironically using the term sportsball js an excellent way to get me to immediately ignore you
Whatever you say, cuck
I initially wrote 'cook' and that's a lot funnier to me
Actually can we make that a thing? Any time someone wants to ironically use the word "cuck" they sub in "cook" instead? Even ironic uses of that insult make me cringe and "cook" really is a lot funnier.
Of course you'd want that you Beta Male Cook.
betamax cook

Oh yeah. I was definitely speaking more to Uriel's words than that dumb tweet.

The least annoying way I've seen sportsball used is by people who have absolutely no clue about sports but know that I am interested in them, so if I tell them I'm going to a football game over the weekend they'll ask on Monday, "how was the sportsball?"

People always assumed I was good at basketball because of it
at some point, I learned to take pleasure in proving them extremely wrong

I know I'll always come back to granblue tho
So that's how I've spent my time this month
People ask about football cause it's ubiquitous, and if people give you shit for not caring then they're assholes
Europeans fucking LOVE this shit oh my god
it generally ends in an excited/interested conversation about like, pro wrestling or podcasting or what-have-you
