Getting files from my PC to my Macbook

I just bought a MacBook yesterday and I thought I got all of my old files onto my iPod to transfer, but it turns out I missed a lot of stuff. Like, 3.5GB of stuff (not porn). Now, I know how to share files on the Mac, but I have no clue how to do it on PC. I already formatted my iPod for Mac, so I can't use it as a hard drive with the PC.
I mean, if it comes down to it, I can just burn a data DVD, but I'd like some way faster than that. Is there an easy way to set up a sharing folder on Windows that I can access with my Mac?
1. Set up a shared folder in Windows. (right-click on folder -> Sharing and Security -> Share this folder on the network)
2. On the Mac, hit Command-K (or Go->Connect to server) and enter smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (but with the PC's IP adress)

That first step is what I don't know how to do
I tried setting up a folder with the PC's IP and it told me no. Then I tried like the Documents and Settings\username\Shared folder and that didn't work

Because sharing in Windows is a bitch.
I tried connecting with an FTP client but that didn't really work out for me
