American Gods is a novel by Neil Gaiman (also known for Sandman, Stardust, Good Omens, and more), which has now been turned into a television show created by Bryan Fuller (also known for Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, and Wonderfalls) with a super great cast that I could probably spend this entire post trying to enumerate. It's the story of ex-con Shadow Moon, who, upon leaving prison, finds himself in the employment of the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday and drawn into a world of supernal intrigue on a road trip across America.

    American Gods is probably my favorite book and the subject material is so perfectly up my alley it's like Neil Gaiman wrote that shit directly for me and I love him for it.

    The first episode is up on Starz.com and the app. I watched it, and I really liked it.

    Extremely minor thematic spoilers if you haven't read the book:
    Wednesday, Shadow, and Mad Sweeney are all pitch-perfect. All the dialog is recognizably Gaimanesque where it is not pulled directly from the novel. The Technical Boy is different, but in a good way. The original Matrix-era fat kid would have seemed out of place in 2017. The show also knows its way around a dream sequence, which is vital. And the use of music is very good.

    Some of the stylistic choices like the Kill Bill blood are kind of jarring, but nothing that ruins the show for me. Here's hoping they can keep up the momentum.

    Sadly Amazon Prime doesn't like either my monitor or my cables, because it refuses to stream in HD due to my setup not being HDCP compliant. So I really hope there's a Bluray set planned at some point.

    Huh. Mr. World. I didn't expect that but in hindsight it makes sense.
    Actually I think it's just because Mr. World wasn't as memorable to me as the other new gods in the book.

    Gonna have to make a note to self to watch this tonight (because of work, not because I watch broadcast television).

    Shadow looks different than I pictured him but I'll adjust.

    The quiz gave me Technical Boy and I know I deserve that with my answers but oh my god he was just the worst in the books. Good to hear he's a little different in the show.

    I always thought it was strange how deeply the original Technical Boy reflected negative stereotypes of computer nerds, especially considering he appeared in a fantasy novel whose massive success was partly due to the fact that Gaiman was one of the first author-bloggers.

    Oh boy

    Having just watched this

    Yeah, I think I see why they went with Fuller

    The whole episode felt like a surreal fever dream, and yet directly pulled from the book, in such a different interpretation visually than I had in my head
    I feel like they told Fuller about the Bilquis scene and he was like SOLD

    I appreciate that they didn't make her a prostitute!

    One of them was "Would you rather get laid or fire employees?" How about neither? "Would you rather have the new iPhone 10 or date a perfect 10?" How about...neither? "Would you rather go a month without sex or a month without social media?" I really do not give a damn about either one but fine I'll go with the sex one because I at least look at Twitter tangentially when they're posted in threads here.

    It's always funny to me, what questions people think are bad on quizzes like these. Because all of those have instant snap choices for me.

    This is one of my favourite books, but I have no good way of watching the show. Alas. It'll be difficult to wait until I can get a DVD or something. I'm glad to hear it sounds good though, I've thought all the previews and stuff looked great.

    It makes perfect sense for a quiz about which god you worship. There's always going to be shitty aspects when you're dealing with gods.
