This is pretty broad but we're all a pretty creative bunch here so I thought I'd toss it out.
I'm sure I'm not alone in being regularly stumped for ideas for things to do for Mother's Day. I haven't been local to my mom for a few decades now and my default has been to send flowers. I'd like to do something different this year for two reasons: I feel kind of lame just sending the same old thing time and time again and, I'll come out and say it, sending flowers is
stupid expensive and money is really tight for my family this year.
So, what awesome, cheap, but thoughtful stuff have you come up with recently for mom? I'm thinking of maybe doing something with photos of my kids? Something like that?

Downside is that now her yard is starting to look more like a botanical garden than an actual yard...
If your mom's not into gardening, then probably wouldn't be ideal.
I don't think I would want to meet a mother who would be disappointed with a nice framed photo of the grandkids, but you might run into cost issues there too: printing the photo (if you don't have a high quality printer), getting a frame and shipping might add up to a chunk of change.
If you can pull it together in time, those memory books from Snapfish generally are cheap because there are always coupons floating around (and you can always make a second copy for yourselves). We used to do one a year and send a copy to each parent - as kids of divorce that meant 4 copies, and 1 for us. It was super easy, pretty cheap, and they did the shipping for us.
Then we got lazy and stopped doing them.
We did Shutterfly a few times and were often frustrated with how horrendous their turnaround time and customer service were but somehow had the idea that they were the only show in town for what they did. We'll give Snapfish a try.
Edit - They specifically do a big advertising campaign for Mother's Day by the way, it's how I first heard of them waaaay back.
Looks unique, but not cheap.
Take that thing and find jewelry of it.
I 100% guarantee you that no matter what that thing is, there's jewelry of it out there.
For example, one of my passions is molecular biology. A quick search of Etsy yields this shop. It's not even the most awesome molecular bio stuff I've seen, but that oxytocin ring (again for example) is a pretty good mother's day gift for someone who can appreciate it, considering what oxytocin does and its role in early parenthood.
Is your mom a mathematician?
Here are some random words I put in front of "jewelry" and then searched for:
Envelope
Car
Granola
Dinosaur
The main reason I suggest this is because it requires some knowledge of what makes her happy to do, presented in an easy medium that, if she likes wearing a necklace or whatever here and there, she can put it on and think of you. It may not work for her at all if she hates jewelry, but otherwise it's probably worth some consideration.
This works best if your mother is fond of going to those places, and especially if there's one that you could meet up at somewhere down the line.
I'm making note of the other ideas for future gifting times. In particular I'm glad to be reminded that the world of custom-made things is vast and not always super expensive.
