[Terrorist Attack] at London Bridge and Borough Market

Emissary42Emissary42 Registered User regular
Separating discussion off of [Hiberno-Britannic Politics].

A van carrying several people heading south on London Bridge was driven onto the pedestrian walkway, striking several people. Some distance later the van came to a stop near Borough Market, where its occupants disembarked and began attacking passersby with long knives. An unrelated stabbing occurred in Vauxhall, causing further confusion.

As of now, the SAS is deployed in Central London, twelve days after the bombing in Manchester.

My girlfriend left London Bridge in a taxi less than 4 minutes before the attack happened.

I am writing this on my phone with my arms wrapped round her asleep on my chest because I won't let her go.

    Fucking hell.

I don't know what to say at this point. I feel helpless any time something like this comes up. I hope everyone is okay and safe.

There's a couple of pages of discussion in the Hiberno-Britannic Politics thread (starting about halfway down here) for anyone looking to catch up, although, per Tube, replies should be directed to this thread.

    The Guardian's summary so far:
Police have declared that attacks in two closely connected areas of London are “terrorist incidents’’
The incidents are on London Bridge and in nearby Borough Market
    There are multiple casualties
The first report of an incident was of a white van ploughing into pedestrians on London Bridge at about 10.08pm
Witnesses say the van swerved onto the pavement and there have been reports of gunfire although that has not been confirmed
A second incident has been ongoing in Borough Market where there are reports of multiple stabbings
Police say they responded to a third incident, a stabbing at Vauxhall, but this is not connected to the events around London Bridge
Theresa May, the prime minster, has called the events a “terrible incident’’ which is being treated as a “potential act of terrorism’’
Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has thanked emergency services after the “brutal and shocking incidents reported in London”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has condemned the “barbaric” and “horrific” attack as “deliberate and cowardly”.
Guests at hotels in the vicinity of the attacks have been evacuated
Security services have carried out a number of controlled explosions in the area of the attacks
Police are urging people to stay away from the affected areas
The government has said there will be a meeting of the emergency committee Cobra on Sunday morning

Incidentally, the One Love Manchester charity concert was scheduled for tomorrow. I doubt they'll have problems there, but from what I'm hearing a possible choice for the timing of this attack was the conclusion of the Champions League Final when people would be out and about to and from pubs in big cities.

Are there any further details of what happened at Vauxhall?

Not much, just that it was unrelated and a stabbing. No terrorism there.

Terrible to hear about these cowardly acts. Thoughts are with the people of London right now.
Spaffy, glad to hear your girlfriend is safe. I can't imagine what you two are going through right now.

Bars and pubs involved in this are places I've visited regularly. God, this is just fucking awful. Absolutely detest that people want to make this amazing city feel this way. Can't really say much else. This one feels personal.

I can't say that we're really "going through" anything. I was extremely worried earlier and I'm glad that she's safe, but I know that tomorrow we'll get up and go to the indoor climbing place a little sadder, but not inherently afraid. I think that letting this become an 'ordeal' would rather be what those arseholes wanted.

I kind of wish I had something pithy to say, but the overall mood in London around these attacks has mainly been "fuck those guys, I'm going to the pub". A kind of resigned defiance grounded in getting on with things. That's where I am right now.

The BBC world report I heard while out tonight talked about a guy trying to distract the attackers by throwing things at them. The man was probably braver than I'd ever be.

I so happen to have recently seen the videos of that interview. I'll keep them behind spoilers for those who don't want to view it, this guy went above and beyond.

I was just about to post these eye witness videos. Nowhere on the BBC or any UK news site will you find out the actual identities of the attackers or find out why the police were able to quickly label this a terrorist attack, so these eye witness accounts are pretty much the only way to get the full news.

Six confirmed dead (this doesn't include the three attackers). From the Guardian:
    What we know so far

Six people have been killed in terror attacks on London Bridge and at Borough Market.

Three male suspects have been shot dead by police. Metropolitan police assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said the men were dead eight minutes after the first emergency call was received.

Canisters seen around the body of at least one of the suspects have been “established to be hoaxes”, police said.

At least 30 people injured in the attacks have been taken to five hospitals across London. Others were treated at the scene.

One of those injured was a British Transport police officer who was one of the first on the scene in response to calls from help from the public. He was stabbed in the head, face and leg, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

None of those killed or injured, or the perpetrators, have yet been named.

Police believe all of those directly responsible for the attack have been killed. Investigations are ongoing.

A stabbing in Vauxhall on Saturday night was not connected to the London Bridge attacks, police confirmed.

Police said the rampage began at 10.08pm on Saturday and lasted eight minutes, with the three suspects shot dead by officers at 10.16pm.

Eight minutes from the first call. Blimey. Good work, chaps.

On one hand, 8 minutes from the attack started until they were taken out - on the other hand, it's insane how much damage they can do in such a short amount of time.

The batch of attacks have really made me think about how good our police are, they really are very good. Not perfect, but yeah.

yes. there seems to be the usual suspects saying oh no we need to stop doing X and get angry and do ??? to sort these guys out - and yet almost every single action of this type plotted in the last 10 odd years has been foiled by the security services before it even happened. this one was shut down pretty quickly too.

you cant have 100% perfect policing because there is an inherent asymmetry; i am suspicious of the idea that there are obvious and easy bits of gov policy they could implement to do something more. aside from perhaps being a bit keener to pick up these sorts when warned about them

Predictably, Trump continues his 100% record of reacting like a douchebag to foreign terrorism by retweeting a Drudge report comment, saying it was terrorism before officials confirmed it and bigging up his travel ban.

Even fucking Putin had a better reaction.

I hope the police are being very careful about what info they give to America because after Manchester it was showed they can't be trusted. I know they still need to share intelligence but I'd be very wary.

enough is enough quoth the May, despite being literally in control of the uks anti terrorism policy for the last 7 years

if only somebody could have done things differently she says imploringly, as she desperately sells weapons to the Saudis

And suppresses info which is basically confirming the open secret that the Saudis are supporting this kind of thing, and have been for years

potentially on a private rather than a state level, but still

Our security forces are doing a great job. But like the NHS, they're doing a great job with less resources, and filling the gap with their own exhausting work. We need more funding in these state services and austerity has not helped our police do their job properly.

With the lack of personal details for the suspects being published, I'd say someone learned their lesson at least.

It seems like the casualties in mass shootings tend to be worse than this, especially with multiple attackers. Two attackers in San Bernardino killed twice as many people, with guns. So, maybe that's not a road he wants to go down.

I have returned from a weekend in Waterford to discover that Paul fucking Nuttall had one of the saner political responses to this attack.

    *sigh*

I take it the alert level hasn't been raised? Has anyone mentioned any special provisions for the election? It's on Thursday, isn't it?
