Hi, let's talk about American Gods! Don't know what it is well here is a brief summary!

w0Iva5Tl.jpg
Shadow is a man with a past. But now he wants nothing more than to live a quiet life with his wife and stay out of trouble. Until he learns that she's been killed in a terrible accident. Flying home for the funeral, as a violent storm rocks the plane, he is greeted by a strange man in the seat next to him. The man calls himself Mr. Wednesday, and he knows more about Shadow than is possible. He warns Shadow that a far bigger storm is coming. And from that moment on, nothing will ever be the same.

I caught up and watched 5 and 6 last night.
    spoiler based on book stuff
The whole bit with Vulcan was kind of jarring as it seemingly changed the entire catalyst for much of the future story from the books. Also I have a feeling that our taxi driver friend may become the first casualty of the big battle now.

Ya wanna expand on that? Not sure what you're implying.

It's still all a set up. Nothing about that whole scenario with Vulcan undermines that and Wednesday could easily have gone into it knowing it was a set up.

Wednesday sets vulcan up as the sacrifice to get the others to commit to the war instead of himself being it. I took it that much of the power he expected to have on his rebirth or whatever call it was because he was the catalyst that influenced the pending bloodshed and not just low key doing his spear stab

    That's my opinion anyways.

    Ah, still think that's happening.
(Real Book Spoilers as well as TV up to 6)
Vulcan dying is gonna be the martyr for the World side to step up the war. So far in the TV version they don't seem to be pressing for the war as much as I (dimly) recall from the books. Before that they seem completely willing to embrace and modernize their older brethren. We haven't seen Kali run down by the Technical Boy yet, have we? I think that's some reordering of things but it works.

Wednesday is still gonna do the sacrifice to himself thing that is at the core of the Odin story. I just don't believe that gets cut for any reason.

    I call her Lich Babydoll.

And thus far I've been impressed with how Starz has handled all the juggling, it's worked out better than I hoped for after the initial announcement.

Of course I could watch Ian McShane read a phone book and be engaged.

Killing Vulcan and having a powerful weapon makes Wednesday a much bigger target for the new gods. He's not just a nuisance, he's an actual threat now. He has pushed them into killing him down the road.

I'm really enjoying the show, even all the changes. Ginger Minge is maybe the best though.

I really loved the show up until 6, which totally lost me. I don't know if it was my mood or the director, who hadn't done any other episodes, but I couldn't wait for 6 to end. The whole thing felt like a really high production episode of Supernatural. Really on the nose and uninteresting.

Contrast that to previous episodes which I think have been, on the whole, incredibly engaging and ballsy, both figuratively and, I guess, literally.

Lots of hangin dong in this show, is what I'm saying.

I enjoyed 6 the least so far but I think it was because the soundtrack was needlessly intrusive and constant

In contrast, the track that played during Gillian Anderson's Bowie scene is stuck with me

That's one thing that definitely stuck out to me, too, so much so to the point where it made me wonder if maybe the whole show had been this way and I was maybe just noticing it now for some reason. The soundtrack in 6 would not shut up and just worked against the scene for much of the episode.

She was the best part of The Fall and Hannibal was just good all around

But her range in American Gods has been phenomenal. To go from Lucille Ball to Bowie to Marilyn Monroe while absolutely nailing them all is mind bottling.

Yay I can stop cluttering up the Netflix and streaming thread.

I have to say that the stuff with Vulcan I felt was a bit underdeveloped, there just wasn't enough time to really explore him and I would have liked seeing a bit of interaction with the town's people.

On the other hand everything involving Laura and Sweeny was great especially
Salim joining them. Just... Don't get killed Salim

I also never expected the new Gods to be so fun. Come on Fuller go full meta and have Media show up as Scully!

Also for the next episode here's hoping that

    (Book spoiler)
The name (A Prayer for Mad Sweeny) is a red herring. I don't want the road trip adventures interrupted just yet and Cairo as told in the books particularly Sweeney's wake would make a hell of an episode, so that's something I'm hoping they won't change

The majority of the episode as a Coming to America segment? And it's about Esse? Sweet!

One thing I will comment on that was in the current day
Presumably the Rabbit is Eostre's. But why would she be involved in it? At this point she presumably hasn't been recruited and while neither side is 'good' as such she was a pretty benevolent figure in the books.

    Quick Guess:
She doesn't want to resurrect DeadWife. I strongly suspect she is Ginger Minge's Resurrection "Guy".

A quick clarification of what we saw.
That was a flashback to Laura's death

Oh, some people on Reddit figured out a rough translation of what Sweeny yells (which is Old Irish and apparently a dead language)
"Haven't I believed enough in your bullshit? Haven't I suffered enough? Isn't that enough itself? I'm not evil! I'm not!"

    Re: what we saw
    Was it a flashback?
I may be misremembering but it looked like there was a scooter on the side of the road there.

I interpreted it as a vision from Wednesday saying, essentially "You've got your coin, now continue down the road and you'll find an unfortunate accident victim with an easily taken motor vehicle so you can get your ass back here where I need you." Since the ice cream truck was on it's side and all, and Sweeney may be strong, but he's not "flip a truck" strong.

And that's what set Sweeney off, because he doesn't want to leave another victim in his wake to serve Wednesday. So, fuck him, dead wife gets to hold the coin for a while longer and they keep going on in the truck to meet his resurrectionist.
I have to rewatch the episode. I clearly was not paying close attention.

It was absolutely Mad Sweeney who killed Laura prior to episode 1, and he did it on orders from Wednesday. This wasn't in the book at all, most of Mad Sweeney's stuff isn't.

To be fair I was already tired last night when I started the episode, but when it was the same actress playing the "Coming to America" story and then was back to the road trip trio, I turned the episode off. I haven't been a fan of the extended "Laura" episodes so that didn't help me want to watch the whole thing.

It's the same actress but not the same character. It's implied that she is the one who brought over Mad Sweeny by telling generations of children about Irish fairy tales.

I should have explained that I've read the book. I got what they were doing and realized it was going to be about Mad Sweeney, who I really like. I guess I'm just wanting more Shadow and Wednesday and the time spent filling in deadwife feels wasted to me as I'm not interested in her other than being dead.

knowing nothing about the book myself, I really liked the episode and the way it developed Sweeney while barely featuring him, while also developing the themes about America being the place where the Old Gods go to die.

  • PantsBPantsB Fake Thomas Jefferson Registered User regular
It seems to be a tendency in shows to do these episodes where they abandon the main plot to backtrack and talk about a secondary character. I don't think that's bad per se but when you've got like 8 episodes and you do it for 2 of them, and you're already doing little origin vignettes every episode, you lose any forward momentum.
