If you want to learn how to play this game without assists, the best way to start is to play it without any assists. It's really difficult to get a sense of speed and the car's limits without actually feeling how the car reacts, so I keep the braking line on. I just don't like redoing the same race over and over. With all the assists off, damage turned on, the AI set to hard, and a manual transmission, I get 140% earnings. If I turned the racing line completely off I would be getting an additional 10% of every race's earnings, but it just isn't worth it to me.
With that said, I am doing some pretty sweet shit with TCS, ABS, and STM off:
I have him in my sights...
Smell ya later!
Now where will I put that trophy?
AWFUCK!
Is there a doctor in the house?
I had to reboot my system using a regular controller so I could take those pictures. Why the fuck couldn't they make it possible to use a regular controller for all of the functions that require a right analog stick? Is it too much to ask that controller 2 work for picture taking and decal positioning? I really like the steering wheel, but I would also like to be able to do these things without rebooting my system each time. Is there a better way to get a regular controller detected as player 1 after using the steering wheel in a race?
Not to mention the fact that while hanging the back end out can be fun, it isn't the fastest way around the circuit. :P
No shit. The most important thing is that it's fun.
does the heal-toe thing without a clutch enhance your fun? is that in the anime cartoon too?
I'm a bit worried on your part. Do you know how to turn right? Forza 2's not going to have very many oval tracks.
Not an oval fan myself. F1 then Rally is more my speed as a 'fan' though I don't watch much racing. Though it seems I watch a fair bit more drifting events than even you if you think heals or toes have anything to do with it.
But ya... this game is rad and in Forza 1 I was pretty good with the Speedster wheel... so don't worry about me
honestly, i dont see why people are bashing the games graphics.
i think it looks fantastic.
i had it all planned out before i bought this that i was going to start with the european region to get the bmw's and ferraris on the cheap, yet once i bought it and started playing it i picked the asian region. oh well, i got my celica now.

Yeah, I had the same dilemma, real toss up between Asia and Europe for me. I went with Europe though, I like me some BMW's and Porsche.
Thanks for all the suggestions on how to learn the game. I'm gonna go for it later this evening. And freshmaster, those pics are awesome. They look nice and they really show off the game's graphics engine well.

and thought to myself, "damn, that's an ugly paint job. Wish I could overwrite it."
Turns out you can. Just put a bunch of huge square vinyls of whichever color you want over the original paint job and you have a clean slate. I'm wondering if you can do that with every car with a pre-existing livery, and if so, oh man.

I'm pretty sure one of the in-game tips says to re-paint cars won in races and sell them at the auction, so I'd say they crafted things around cars being real paint friendly. That would explain why reward cars sell for shit if you just sell them in game.
And hey, I made a car design! It's got homemade shurikens on it, with long, thin triangles streaking from them. I'm sure it looks like ass, but I'm fucking proud of it. I'd post a picture if I could.

So, so good. It's basically Forza 1 with improved everything, and all kinds of nifty features. I can see myself wasting countless hours of my life with the photo mode alone, I've always loved them. A couple pics, the first taken by me, the second by my brother:
As you can tell, we love our muscle cars, so naturally we both went with North America as our regions
Also, a weird glitch I had occur more than once earlier: During a system link game, after one or two races I was unable to do anything with the party. I could change options and choose my car, but neither me nor my brother could set ourselves to ready and I couldn't change any of the options on the AI cars.
Sharp. Here's my 914 in its earliest stages of customization; I've since added some small manufacturers' decals on the front-quarter panel and a racing number 7 on the side.

I just painted my new car. I used that decal trick in order to cover up all that dumb Do-Luck crap. On my next car I think I'll layer gradients for a pearlescent effect.
Holy fuckshit, this game is every bit as fun as I'd hoped. A 914 tuned to the nines (D400) is a wonder to behold. I'm tempted to decal it up but as it is it's the same color as my old '75 914. I like that. I'm so glad I started out in Europeland, the baby Porsche + the Lancia hatchback of doom are two of the most fun ass-ugly cars ever made.
So, anyone else with the 914, have you managed to tune down the oversteer? I've tried various combinations of tire pressures and roll bar settings and can't seem to manage it. Could be the stock tires, but I'll be damned if I'm taking this thing out of D-class for awhile.
But when I do... 911 GT2 engine swap, here I come.

Start playing around with some downforce options if they're available for your 914 and won't kick it out of D-class. Downforce will give you more grip, and you should be able to play around with the downforce and oversteer to find a good balance. Googly-type linkage:
Awesome, awesome pics everybody. The shurikens are sweet, Omeks. It doesn't have to be elaborate to be cool--subtle decals and paint work make for sweet rides as well.

I thought there was some option where you could work on the pain scheme on your PC then save it to your car? Am I just crazy?
And if I am how the fuck did he get fruitfucker just using the shape decals!
You are crazy.
This is all done by playing with simple shapes... these guys are nuts. Just got my copy, and can only imagine how much time I'll be spending on this aspect of the game alone.
Is it a more interesting experience because of the AI and damage modelling?
Graphically it doesn't look better...
1) More interesting? Yes. The custom decals and online play also help.
2) I don't know about you, but to me 60 FPS tends to look graphically better than 30.
Damn. I can't get the hang of ABS being turned off. I keep speeding off into the grass because I can't brake correctly, and when I try to be real careful going around a corner, I end up getting passed by the other drivers since I'm going so sow trying not to go off the road.
I'm fine with everything else jacked up to the highest difficulty, though.

The graphics in Forza 2 completely smoke GT4... not saying GT4 is a bad looking game; its just that Forza pulls off better lighting, vehicle modeling, and environments on a rock solid 60fps with no dips whatsoever.
The AI is better, the damage makes people race more cautiously (which enhances the whole sim aspect), and the online auction house is a HUGE thing.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Actually I have noticed the occasional framerate hitch, but so far it's always been when it doesn't entirely matter (right at the starting line, with everyone peeling out at once) and it's only about half a second. I'm surprised nobody's jumped on that yet.
I think everyone is complaining about the graphics, because they tend to look very clean. People are spoiled by Gears where everything is covered in dirt, grime, and scars. I just see it as a different style. It looks beautiful to me. Although, I think it'd look about 20 times better if I had an hdtv.
Simply having to be cautious and not obliterate my car is going to change the way I look at this.
I'll definitely rent it. I just don't want to buy another hyped up racing sim that kills my brain with repetitive 'around the track $300, around the track $300, only 27 more times until I can upgrade!'
edit: I can make a case for Gears looking pretty bad. I think this game looks great, just that, being a racing sim it doesn't look *that* much better. What can you do with shiny metal cars on empty tracks?
Suped up framerate is good news. I'm a framerate whore. I just hope the hitching mentioned isn't bad.
Oh man you guys. I was just in the most horrible wreck ever.
CRUNCH! goes the glass.
But that's not the end of it. Ohhhhhhhhh no. I happen to then rebound back onto the road where...
So there I was, battered and beaten. This is when happens when you turn off your ABS kids. Stay safe out there...
But I persevered and made my way to the finish line. Granted, I was in dead last, but I should get a medal for determination, right? Hey, there's my bumper!

I don't understand what you're getting at here. Both GT4 and Forza 2 run at a constant 60fps.
Forza does look much better in-game than GT4, especially in HD, because it totally eliminates any issues revolving around aliasing and texture filtering (which are very noticeable in-game in GT4).
I still like GT4's style much more, especially in replays. I wish Forza 2 would've included some camera angles that allowed you to see what's going on in the race, not just "hey look another extreme closeup of your car from just barely above road level."
EDIT: I would've posted an image showing the extreme "jaggies" in GT4 for comparison's sake, but I'm having trouble finding any that aren't photos from photo mode (which really don't do a good job of showing you what the in-game footage looks like).

Huh, I got the impression that the damage was going to be more brutal this time around in terms of affecting your car's performance. After that wreck, your car shouldn't be able to limp anywhere. Maybe I read something wrong or imagined it.
How are people finding the AI? Is it as ridiculously violent as the first game?

depends on your difficulty setting, he was probably playing at medium. You can't totally destroy your car at that setting but you can sure fuck it up. there is a hard and a realistic setting as well, hitting a wall would put your out of the race.
Yeah, I'm still not getting the complaints about the graphics, especially from the reviews. Maybe these guys are just used to heavy layers of fluff poured on top of all the visuals--hyper graphics, for lack of a better term. Forza is supposed to look as real as possible, and not have a sparkly layer to make things look flashier (Burnout, Crackdown, etc.).
Also, I believe the physics engine runs at a blistering 360 fps in Forza 2, so 60 fps for visuals is chump change, yo.
