On Astringents

Should I not use astringent with 25% or so alchohol? Patrick Bateman says alcohol dries the skin and makes you appear older, and wiki says astringents promote clogging of the pores (which is the opposite of what I want, and goes against what I though astringent was for).

The problem I have with my skin is clogged pores on my nose and forehead which, while generally invisible to everyone who isn't myself standing an inch from a mirror, occasionally turn into visible blemishes and are always a source of annoyance and contributor to poor self-image.

If astringents aren't the best way to deal with this, then what should I use instead?

I use an exfoliating facial mask

it's effeminate as hell to talk about but it works

Daily exfoliant, or those exfoliants that you only use a couple of times a week? I didn't know exfoliants could substitute for astringents, but if so that's great.

And you might as well tell me active ingredients are in that product since I doubt I'll be able to find the exact same thing here.

I've heard good things about the oil cleansing method although I haven't tried it myself. It sounds counterintuitive but apparently it works.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

I use Proactive. I'm not sure if I should be embarassed about that, but it really works.

I'm not keen on experimenting with something that doesn't come with a personal internet recommendation.

I use Proactiv too, but only for my nightly routine since I don't like the moisturizer enough to wear it while awake and I find I can't make it all last from shipment to shipment if I use the stuff twice a day. Also, I think I may've initially started reducing my use after it dried my skin off my face from overuse.

Proactiv has some serious drying problems. It never actually helped me out, just made my skin crackle. It sounds like an exfoliant is your best bet.

What kind of exfoliant, though, in terms of ingredients and frequency of use?

Or are they all the same?

I used Proactiv for two years and it didn't really do anything for me. I've been off it for a month or so now, and I've been using Cetaphil, an apricot scrub three times a week and a skin toner that doubles as an aftershave, and my face is about the same as it was with proactiv or a bit better. Go figure.

I didn't recommend anything because I don't remember what I used, and I've found skincare products to be so personal in effectiveness that it feels pointless to recommend them. Do you go to a dermatologist? Trying samples of different products is a good way to find one that works for you. Sorry I don't have anything more concrete.

I've used A LOT of different brands, thanks to my acne-prone skin for10+ years :(
I recommend Vichy Normaderm Pure Astringent Toner, which smells, feels, and works fantastic.
I'm not quite sure what's in it, but as far as astringents are concerned, this one always finds some sort of trapped dirt or grease to clean off of my face, even after thorough cleansing.
Remember that regular rountine of using cleanser, astringent/toner, moisturizer, weekly exfoliant, and night cream are essential to keeping your skin free of most problems!

Like in the other beauty thread, I have the same problem near my nostrils and under my lip/chin area... St Ives scrubs (blemish and blackhead control specifically) and mask have been good to me.
