Beer in my mouth

Apparently beer is an acquired taste? And that you have to drink a lot before you like it. So I've been drinking beer now every so often but I still can't seem to like it. I've tried Peroni, Miller, Castle. Should I just drink a different brand or am I just not meant to drink beer?

Have you tried Guinness? It tastes kinda...frothy, IMHO.
I drink beer constantly in social settings, but still don't like it much.

So maybe im out of touch with things.

But if you don't like how something tastes, and it has no major nutritional bonus, why bother drinking it at all?

    For fun?

Anyway to the op, most people I know who aquired their taste for beer aquired it because they were getting drunk with friends because it's fun. Not just by drinking beer for the sake of drinking beer.

Beer is definitely an acquired taste. I used to hate it, and would rather take shots than drink it. Now though it's good, and I'll have one with dinner sometimes just for the taste.

It's probably different for everyone, but for me the transition happened abruptly one night. Previously I'd been trying to avoid tasting it as much as possible, but then randomly I decided to just tough it out and force myself to experience the taste as much as possible, and just sipped it instead of trying to force it down. I kinda... accepted that it tasted bad, and for some reason once I did that it stopped being that bad. I dunno how helpful that's going to be for you, but it's probably worth a shot.

Meh, beer was the first alcohol I ever consumed, and I thought it was so bad that I considered avoiding alcohol for the rest of my life. I don't know what people like about it. More wine and sake for me I suppose. (Edit: and mead. OMG how could I forget mead.)

I'm still not that fond of beer, but there's definitely some I find more appealing than others and have found myself enjoying some of the more recent stuff I've tried.

First off, be aware that there are multiple types of beer. The stuff that's really popular tends to be lager, which I'm not predisposed to not liking bitter tastes. It may be worth trying other styles of beer such as ale. While many of the ingredients are the same, even subtle changes can have a significant effect. I won't be chugging Bud anytime soon, but I can enjoy Sam Adams ales.

just ask your friends what they like, and try it

ultimately, though, if you're college-aged, you're gonna be seeing a lot of bud, natty and coors, so you might wanna try and get used to it

You just get to a stage where you don't care what things taste like. You care about their effects whether or not they are yummy in your tummy. There are worse things than dealing with a little temporary bad taste to have a good time.

Ehh, just open 1 of every beer, and drink them all.

No, really. Alcohol in general is an acquired taste. My first time drinking, I was drinking a smirnof ice. On of those 4% drinks that are practically sprite. I could barely finish them. Later that night I was drinking a Heineken, and thought it was the worst thing in the world.

A little over a year later, I love drinking Heiniken, and I can easily drink really crappy beers(Steel Reserve, Bud Light, etc). I even chug hard alcohol(though my tastebuds just hate whiskey for some reason).

You just got to get used to it. The first few times drinking beer sucks. I actually suggest trying steel reserve. It was the first beer I didn't hate.

There's easier ways to get pissed than through a 4.8% ethanol solution. If you don't like it, you don't like it. There's no need to force yourself.

I disliked beer at first - I suggest breaking yourself in with some kind of summery lager with a crisp, clean taste. This is as close as you're going to get to a shandy while still retaining your sense of manliness. Have this while eating, like at a bbq or with chips - the beer flavour can be overwhelming at first. Once you can successfully drink a whole bottle without feeling queasy, you're away. You'll be amazed how the world of beer opens up for you once you're used to it. There are many crappy beers out there, but a decent beer on a hot day is magic.

...and you call yourself an Australian...

I am all for beer. It's a great social drink - mixers will just never be as friendly. Beer is cheap, easy and inclusive.

Yes, it is an acquired taste - but it's not like you have to drink a certain amount before you'll like it. Shop around the cheap/common brands, and see which you prefer. American beers tend to be really watery in my experience - so maybe try some cheap(ish) imported stuff.

I can't stand beer, I've never been able to stand it. In fact I don't drink anything which comes off draught pretty much (not that I'm opposed to it, it just seems I don't generally like it). If i'm at home, or feeling flush, I'll be on whisky (current favourites being Jura and Laphroig) otherwise it's vodka and coke all night.

I -do- drink beer though on occasion, if I'm at a friends house and they're offering it out. All I can suggest is make sure it's cold, ice cold, it goes down so much easier.

I used to not like beer at all. Drinking only shots. Then eventually I moved on to what my friends would call "girly beer"; beers that have a citrus flavor. Evetually I started drink beer and actually enjoy the taste. I like having a single beer with a meal, or when hanging out with friends on weeknights.

I used to hate beer, and only drank white wine for awhile and shots of vodka...Until one night when I had 9 shots in about an hour and I spent the rest of the night hugging a toilet and not really remembering anythign else. After that I was unable to stomach vodka for a good long time. I've recently turned 21 and have been trying my stab at beer again. Trust me, once you get away from cheap beers it gets a LOT better.

The first few times you might be like "man, this isn't that good", but then a day or two later you'll be thinking "man, a newcastle sure does sound good right now".

Don't drink something you don't like. Beer (especially darker beer) is an acquired taste. Similar to the way you may wake up one day and start drinking coffee, the same thing tends to happen with beer.

That said, there's nothing wrong with hunting around for beer you might like. My favorite chain is Old Chicago just because they 100+ beers, I like to try a couple new ones every time I go out. You might have a similar bar in your area.

Personally, I like to start with a couple Guinness, then switch to Newcastle, and at the end of the night switch to something like Miller Lite. Drinking heavy beers all night will make you fat, unfortunately. :x

If you can get it, try Shiner Bock. It has a GREAT flavor that is mild enough that mit isn't exactly an acquired taste. It is fresh and great tasting. I hardly ever get anything but it (unless I am trying expensive microbrews or imports).

Sadly, Shiner Bock is generally something tough to get outside of Texas (like many of it's best food and drink products :/ )

Once you get away from crappy domestic light beer you'll have a better shot at liking beer. I suggest trying hefeweizens first (unfiltered wheat beer). They're typically crisp, refreshing, and not too strong. Beersnobs like myself love them because they are hard to brew and can cover a wide flavor palette, beer newbies love them because they're easy to drink. Find yourself a good taphouse and start trying some brews. Most taphouses (around here anyway) will do a sampler tray, where you get several half pints of different beer. Don't like one? Fine, don't finish it. I guarantee you will find something you like, and before you know it you'll be sucking down black ales with the rest of us.

PS. For the love of God, if you're served a beer with a slice of lemon/lime/orange, don't just squeeze it and plop it in your beer! The juice will balance the pH of the beer out and completely change it's flavor, but you don't want to add too much.

Good advice. The other week, I split 2 pitchers of Blue Moon with my friend. I ended up using an orange slice per glass. By the time I was done I have like 6 slices in my beer glass and was practically drinking orange juice.

solsovly makes a good point. Some people just like beer.

    And some people don't.

If you don't like it, don't drink it. Try again in a year with a local brew or a microbrew -- not bud -- and see if your opinion has changed.

If you really want to develop a taste for it, it's best to work your way towards it. I would suggest drinking ciders, actually, as they have a lot of the underlying taste that's similar to beer, with a hint of apple sweetness instead of the bitterness of beer. But DON'T get Ciderjack or Woodchuck! Get strongbow or woodpecker. Woodpecker is a good "intro" without just being sweet, and strongbow is a dry cider with very low sweetness.

I know a lot of people who prefer ale to lager, but I don't know many who dislike lager but like ale.

If you're looking for a good lager to start on, I suggest trying Beck's. There's nothing in it but water, malted barley, hops, and yeast (good old German 1516 purity laws), and it has a crisp, refreshing, but plain taste. You can also get Beck's in bottles just about anywhere and it's not usually too expensive. If you don't like that, try Kronenbourg, which is slightly sweeter (but also more expensive).

For ale, it's difficult to give advice since the best ales are locally brewed. You would do best to just go into a pub and ask about the cask ales they have available. In fact, most publicans will happily give you a sample of each so you can see what you like, if they're not too busy.

Check some local bars to see if they do any events. I don't mean the go crazy club bars, I mean something that would have multiple beer reps there. Couple years ago when I was in college, the best kept secret was the hotel bar ON campus. There were literally 0 people there most of the time. Everyone else crammed into the club and tavern style bars. Free appetizers during happy hour, lots of beer selection and they'd invite company reps to come advertise.

There was a day there was just free beer sampling/gifts/food all day long. There was only one other group besides my group of friends. Was amazing.
