prom

My prom is in about two weeks. Is it acceptable to just wear my band tux? I won't lie, it pretty much looks the same to me, but I don't want to look like a dufus. If I do wear my band tux, i'll rent a vest, tie, etc.. If I rent a tux, I don't really want to blow another 25 bucks on a vest. What should I do?

What does this "band tux" look like? You mean like a band uniform?

No, no, no. it's a tuxedo we use for concerts. I'm not that socially inept ;)

Not knowing what your band tux looks like it's hard to say. Maybe you could ask your date.

Consult your date, but it will probably be fine. And the prom dance floor usually gets hot enough that you're going to want to ditch any type of vest/jacket you brought with you anyway. In temperature, I mean.

Since this is already here, is a suit good for a prom? I kinda need to buy a suit for some upcoming stuff and it'd be great if I could save some cash by killing two birds with one stone.

If it is like most band tuxes, I would ditch the cummerbund and bowtie and get something more interesting. Also, an upgrade on the cufflinks and studs might be in order (insert stud joke here)

Yeah, I knew alot of band kids that just rented a vest and colored bowtie to match their date's dress and went with that. Much cheaper.

This is what I'm wearing, except I got the vest and pants straight black instead of stripes. It's a tux obviously. Is this kinda close to what your band tux looks like?

I'm not even gay, and I would so rape that guy. Hot threads, Daric. Nicely done.

As for the band tux question, you may want to consider that everyone will know it is your band tux. If moneys tight, meh, definately a solution. Otherwise, spring for a rental and assert your personal taste.

It's common to arrive to a place where everyone is threaded to maximum heat and think 'y'know, I should have gone for the gold in my attire'. It is less common to arrive to such and think 'man this sucks, I just look way too damn good right now.

    Truthiness:

People will be able to tell the difference, no bones about it, especially the other kids in band, and, not to sound sexist, but your date will kind of feel like she's being short-changed by a prom date that isn't dressed to his best (or at least to the same level that she is).

A lot of people think that prom is way more important than it is, I'd advise you to gauge whether or not your date is one of these. If not, and you don't care that people know you're wearing your band tux/you have no money for a rental, then go for it.

But, and I'm a bit of a stodgy old man about these sorts of things, I think every man should know what it feels like to be dressed really really well. It's a whole level of confidence that just makes you feel great when you're wearing a well fit tux and your friends and date will feel it.
