Happy Father's Day you sons of bitches.

Thank you to this thread which got me through the two most miserable weeks of my life. Two weeks where if I even held my four month old daughter she would just scream nonstop.

The thread that got me through the same daughter just refusing to feed from a bottle.

The same thread that got me The Happiest Baby on the Block. I am going to get the Five S's tattooed on my bicep.

Here was my first father's day gift.

Can we get an increase in the file size of photos? My phone apparently won't take photos less than 3.5 megs?

edit: finally got the photo hosted by texting myself. But, wow, we need to increase the image size for photos. My stock Samsung Galaxy S7 cannot take photos less than 3.5 megs.

    Happy Father's Day everyone!

I hope everyone had a great one and touched base with some of the folks that helped raise them. I'm enjoying a day to relax with a few new Gundam to build and some delightful online currency that turned into wrestling and Star Wars on the PS4 (I don't even watch wrestling but I never stopped loving the video games).

it would be very expensive for Penny Arcade to host thousands of 5 meg photos forever and you dont need to post 4000 pixel images to the forums.

Happy Father's day everyone! I've been lurking in this thread for a few months but now I can officially say that I'm going to be a father in December! We had our parents over for lunch today and they were all very surprised (but excited!) when we announced that they were going to become grandparents.

    Congratulations @m!ttens

The one time I used imgur I uploaded a headshot of Niko and I forgot to make it private/have comments turned off, and it got 200 downvotes and a stream of comments calling me a pedophile (I guess because it was a headshot and you couldn’t tell he was wearing clothes?). So... don’t forget to turn comments off!

I had a very good father's day. Morning with my daughter doing whatever, lunch out, but at someplace that does kids eat free on Sundays, thus satisfying both my desire for nice food and my desire for saving money. A few fancy beers, frozen custard, cooking and dicing up the first local strawberries of the year. Sitting out on our deck in the heat, drinking a cold beer, chatting with my wife and playing with my kid. Also my wife arranged some small canvases and paint, and now we have my right hand and my wife's left hand on 'em, with my daughter's respective hands atop those. Also my kid made me a coaster at her nursery school.

It's all I want, folks. I'm so happy.

I spent Father's day asleep and am now at work since I work the night shift. Saturday night I was off though and did hang out with my wife and son. Working nights is terrible.

    Mori got a mostly kids-free Father’s Day

But it was also because he was at therapy this morning, then had to cook his dad a Father’s Day dinner this afternoon (I took the kids out), so it wasn’t hugely relaxing fun! Sorry!

Is there a quick/effective way to do this from the app that I’m missing? From the iOS app I can upload no problem, but all of the share links/options seem to give links to the Imgur website instead of copying the jpg location.

If I want to copy the link to the jpg (so that I can just use the img tag here) I have to open Imgur in a browser>Menu button>images>click image>choose Direct Link from the drop down> copy/paste.

So I'm reading Mini-Dead a bedtime story that has a genie in it.

I interrupt the story to ask Mini-Dead what she would wish for if she had three wishes.

    Her answers:

    - lots of cheese
    - to be able to dance like a ballerina
    - a mountain of kittens that won't scratch her

I think those are some pretty sweet wishes. Also, someone's getting signed up to dancing classes.

Father's day we screwed up and let our son sleep too late in the morning so we thought maybe skip the nap? Oh god he was a terror all day, made worse by the heat an powered by the evil heart of a small child.

I did hear him yesterday refer to orange juice as "baby juice" and yes yes that is what it shall be.

Anya and Niko went climbing yesterday and had a lot of fun! We shall definitely go again.

I’m exhausted, currently sitting in urgent care anticipating a 3-4 hour wait with Anya, who’s broken out in hives. She’s absolutely covered. She was at urgent care earlier today and they said to take Claritin; she did, the hives went away, but they returned right before bed and she can’t take any more Claritin so I decided to take her back to urgent care. Didn’t want to risk it getting suddenly worse while she was asleep.

Hey so we're taking the Bean to visit my family in Australia in a little under a week.

Anyone got any tips to make a 16 hour flight with a 5 month old any less of a lovecraftian hellscape?

We brought little goodie bags for the people sitting near us. Didn’t help with the baby specifically, but made our neighbors patient (or at least, made us not feel bad about bothering them).

Ours liked going up and down the aisle whenever possible too, so you can also try that

We went the opposite direction with Ellie at 8 months

We lucked out and got a fairly empty plane and they moved us around so that we got the bassinet row.

Get the bassinet row. It seems like a gimmick, it is not a gimmick. If Bean is a fairly decent sleeper, the bassinet will save you and/or K's arms and back for at least and hour or so.

Planes are loud. They just are. Your main concern with an angry baby is the two or so immediate rows around you. Give Bean something to drink on takeoff and landing and it should help the ears. Other than that, sleep should be fairly easy.

You're in luck that you're only going from the West coast to Aus, so you should be all good for a single flight. My folks live on the East Coast so on our way over (your way back) we took a layover in LA, spent the night in a hotel, took showers, took a bath with the baby and slept in a bed before doing another 6 hour flight the next morning. This is an option for you, Hawaii is a pretty good midpoint if you're keen, although that's still US customs and I understand not being too keen on that.

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Flight attendants will help you, even if it's just holding the baby so you can run to the toilet while the other parent sleeps.

    You'll be fine.

we've done this exact flight with bea and rex once and rex three times, now. it's long but not so bad, especially when the kid's immobile. walk the aisles. make friends. enjoy being serviced.

one thing - don't carry on too many of your own creature comforts because it just gets in the way of staying organised and stress free. it's great to dream of reading three books and a magazine and playing some civ on your laptop, while fiddling with DSLR camera settings, but let's be honest - you're just going to wind up watching as many jason bateman comedies as the in-flight entertainment provides. decent headphones, some bottled water from the terminal and a change of t-shirt and undies are all you really need.

Because my family decided for us that next March was going to be the time for the Disney cruise, with the more appropriately aged 4-6 year olds.

I wonder if you're going to buy a seat for the little one #pipe? We'll need to buy tickets before long, and unless we can get seats on a two seater row, I may want to do it to avoid making some dude's life miserable sitting next to us. That, or make sure a grandparent can fly next to us.

We've managed to set up a little tent sort of arrangement at times, because they're small enough to sleep sideways up to a point -- and we did always get a seat even for very little kids for exactly this reason.

    B3usNYf.jpg

Sometimes if you get lucky, you can book three of the middle section of four, and rely on the fact that nobody is going to willingly choose the remaining spot so you can get extra space, but that only works if the flight doesn't fill up.

  • PerrsunPerrsun Registered User regular
We’ve got a 2 hour flight each way coming up just before the little guy turns 1. For that one we didn’t get him his own seat, figuring it’s short enough that we could manage holding him.

Now, sooner or later, we’ll have to fly from MN to Malaysia... that one's gonna be just a tad bit longer. I hadn’t even considered the “stop for a night in LAX” option mentioned earlier. Might be worth looking into.

Everyone else has given the advice I’d give, but I’d add to pack as many diapers and baby clothes as possible! Twice now my kids have ended up either having diarrhea or travel sickness on a plane and ended up going all through 6-7 changes of clothes I brought with me. And it’s maybe not such a risk with a small baby, but one time Niko threw up on landing and covered *me* from head to toe in vomit, so I was glad I packed a full change of clothes for myself, too.

The expensive ones are generally worth it, and they’re usually more stable. Niko gets so frustrated when his cheap dinosaurs tip over all the time!

Having said that, we got an entire bucket of dinosaurs for $20 at Walmart (with which to decorate Niko’s cake) and I was surprised by the quality of those; better than some of the slighty-more-expensive amazon cheapies.

My favourites are the Schleich ones and the ones you can get at the natural history museum in London; there’s another brand of hard dinosaur Niko has that actually chipped pretty easily in play. The ones you can get at Target are nice for a mid-price point, some of the two legged ones don’t stand very well, though.

@#pipe yeah I did fine. My hips for fine and didn't ache.

But again we got lucky with the almost empty plane, pretty much everybody had a row to themselves after take off. So I sat in the bassinet row while Ecco was in our original seats sleeping, then we switched halfway through the flight.

We also splurged a little on the flight back and got the sky couch from airnz (don't know if you're carrier has something similar). It was ok, I wasn't very comfy, but Ellie was able to sleep in the seat/couch/bed thing and still be buckled in.

When we flew back from Japan in a Dreamliner they tried moving us to a bulkhead row and wedging our hips into the seats was a non-starter.
