Not to mention the statues of the mayor's assistants chicken. Lotta graft and shenanigans.
It's like how Bob the builder is a cut rate builder that only survives because he doesn't have to pay his machines. Either that or it's a drug smuggling front run by Wendy that's in cahoots with Leo's dad (why else would they put up with his constant screw ups?).

Yeah. There's a bad guy who calls himself a mayor who lives in a cave with six cats. This guy keeps causing havoc, including major damage to the town and damn near killing people, but somehow is not in jail. Chickaletta is the least of my concerns.

Mrs Mittens just mentioned to me tonight that we should start thinking about building a registry soon and that started a chain of thinking about all the stuff we're going to need. Yikes! We're probably going to use Amazon unless anyone has a really good experience using anyone else (in the US). Also, what items are absolute must-haves, what did you find you used a lot more than expected, and what was an absolute waste of money? Thanks in advance!

A good bottle warmer is a fantastic thing to have.

Get a good diaper bag. (I like the ones I've used from Columbia.)

People are going to bury you in burping diapers and blankets; you won't really need all that many.

Don't buy a huge amount of diapers before your baby is born; good chance you'll buy too many of the wrong size and either not need them for a couple of months and need to store them or only need them for a week or two and you'll have too many.

Newborn-sized clothes, depending on how quickly your tyke grows, will only fit for a couple of weeks. Don't go overboard, no matter how cute they are.

We really liked the easy-to-use Velcro swaddles. Easier to put on, and harder for the baby to escape :P

    Buy a pacifier.

Even if you never end up using it, my theory was that it was better to have one around if you did need it, then to have to run out at 2am because your are losing your mind and nothing else is working.

We never used the ones we bought for Ellie, but she is now using them for her baby dolls.

I love the Dr Brown bottles we use. Siglet has rarely if ever needed to be burped. They are more annoying to clean, though. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IXYOD2?colid=322V91UWPKERQ&coliid=I2BDSVI1411G91&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link

This bottle brush is excellent https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038JDVCY?colid=322V91UWPKERQ&coliid=I3FE3SETB44DQI&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link

I got this backpack style diaper bag and I like it a lot. Lots of little pockets to store stuff. I've had bottles leak in it and just threw it in the wash and let it air dry, no prob. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071RLWKGQ?colid=322V91UWPKERQ&coliid=I29X5K7WKIO48W&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link&th=1

These changing pad liners are really helpful especially early on when they pee a lot during diaper changes https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009UPUJIY?colid=322V91UWPKERQ&coliid=IYRFAVXFK2Z2I&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link

This drying rack for bottles, pacifiers, small toys, whatever is very nice to have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032G9E0G?colid=322V91UWPKERQ&coliid=I3MMK0Y3X6YL9D&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link

I inherited a bunch of these bibs from a friend and I love them https://www.amazon.com/aden-anais-Absorbent-Multi-Use-Twinkle/dp/B00IIDRNWE/ref=sr_1_6_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1529464874&sr=1-6&keywords=aden+and+anais+bib&th=1

A good carrier is essential, I like this one a lot - baby can face in or face out when they get older https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I6IGF4I?colid=322V91UWPKERQ&coliid=I1JUVNU847T3ZL&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link

A diaper pail and a high chair are also essentials - just browse around online to find ones you like, as I'd say there are plenty of good options

Amazon is great for your registry and when you reach a threshold of stuff purchased from it you get freebies.

We used our Bumbo floor seat like two times, Siglet didn't like it and it doesn't seem super liked by doctors anyway. So I'd say stay away from that.

Let me know if you are doing cloth diapering and I will shout at you some more about products. :D

Also loved a company called Cheeky Wipes.

They do a reusable wipes system. They're basically just terry cloth wash cloths, in a Tupperware container that your add water and some nice smelling oils to and use in place of baby wipes. The dirty ones go into another Tupperware container and then go through the laundry.

The also have a set of microfiber face cloths as well. We still use them.

We used art Brown bottles for a while, and they were her favorite brand initially. Eventually we ended up switching solely to Pigeon brand bottles. For some reason she’s able to drink like twice as much milk in a single sitting with these, so we haven’t looked back.

Use Craigslist. People give away or sell for cheap things for newborns every day because your baby grows out of it so quickly.

Strollers, car seats, cribs, change tables, even clothes and toys, you can get them used for cents on the dollar

No shade but if I spend a thousand dollars on a stroller throw me in a gulag.

Even when buying new, expensive doesn't mean better. We've bought 5 or so different brands of bottles since we've been on formula since 6 weeks and the ones that leak the least, cause the least gas and are easiest for the bean to use also cost 5 dollars for three of them. .

We don't use a diaper bag, just a backpack we had lying around. We dont have room for a change table and just change the dude on a waterproof mat on the couch. Instead of recieving blankets we just got squares of flannel from a fabric store. I don't mean to sound cheap, but there is price gouging like crazy in the baby industry and a lot of the shit folks say you NEED is not necessary.

  • JansonJanson Registered User regular
About the only things I used with both babies were the rock n play, baby carriers, baby monitor and cosleeper! They were so wholly different with very different needs.

I agree with pipe except to say car seats should really be bought new; you don’t know the history of a used one, plus car seat technology is constantly being updated and the seats expire after a certain number of years.

You can spend a fair chunk of change on a convertible car seat, but it can last you from birth until expiry (we finally bought Anya a new car seat this year - and she’s 6! - and it was because it was close to expiring, not because she had outgrown it yet). There are also very inexpensive infant car seats, which your baby would outgrow by ~1 year, but after that your next options would be cheaper than a convertible.

  • lonelyahavalonelyahava Call me Ahava ~~She/Her~~ Move to New ZealandRegistered User regular
Also, if this is likely to be your only child, take a look at renting an infant car seat.

We did that with Ellie and for the first 6 months of her life she was in one of those graco click and remove car seat things that we rented from a baby store. We also rented a wheeled base for it so it was literally "pull it out of the car, attach to wheels, and go, and then reverse"

at 6 months old, after much research and a big baby show that offered great discounts, we bought a convertible car seat from diono. We returned the infant seat and didn't have some random piece of plastic that we're never going to use again hanging around the house.

Keep in mind that car seats have crumple zones that absorb impact in accidents, do if a particular seat has already been in an accident those are already crumpled and you should no longer be using that seat. Something the craiglist seller may not be entirely honest about.

Ellie has these little plastic animals. Some from these Zoob tube things that my mom sent, a few Schleich ( spelling?), and some random things from the $2 section at The Warehouse (our local big box store).

Of these toys, she can't decide if her favourites are the horses or the marine animals.

But tonight, I think she chose the marine animals.

We were sitting on the couch, waiting for her daddy to get home, and we decided to watch some youtube. Now she has her favourite youtube videos that she watches (chuchu tv, abc kids, some russian families, and so many goddamend finger family song videos that I want to kill, also Blippi who is awesome), but those are all on Daddy's phone and mommy refuses to put them on my phone or my computer.

So we decided to look for whales.

The pure joy on her face when she saw the whales on the screen.

She ran to her toys, her animals are dvided up, by the way, into land and sea creatures. She ran to her animals and grabbed all of her marine animals and brought them to me on the couch.

    "Orca mommy! Find the Orca!"

So I loaded up a video of Orca. Then dolphins. Then Octopus. Then sting rays. And she watched the videos with rapt attention and excitement and pure happiness.

I've been in a bad place mentally and emotionally this last week and I needed that, I needed her.

    Hug your babies, my friends.

Oh, I'm also teaching her about the water cycle. As she asked where the water in the sink went and I told her that it went to the ocean and so now she says bye bye to the water and asks it to say hi to the fishies.

Haha, I relate to this so hard!

Mini-dead is also into Blippi and Ryan. I'm not too keen on the crass commercialism on Ryan's channel, but he's a real little kid, not an actor, and she really relates to him so I'm not going to deny her.
For whatever reason, Mini-dead has gotten into Clams. I don't remember how it started, probably an explanation of where pearls come from which piqued her curiousity, but every now and again, she'll come see me when I'm at the computer and ask to see pictures of clams.

She also says bye bye to the water when we pull the drain. I tell her the water is all done helping her clean and is going home now.

Regarding registries, we used both Target and Amazon. Both places will give you a completion coupon about 1 month before the expected birth date you enter. If you really want to, you can skew the system a bit by entering an earlier date, so you can get your coupon sooner.

Also, Huggies, Pampers, and Similac all have rewards programs you can sign up for, and all 3 of those brands gave us a free "welcome baby" kit near the birthdate we input.

As for things we're glad we got:
We got this pack and play. We wanted something where we could put the baby down out in our living room that wasn't the floor, and this doubled by giving us a changing station. We just put the wipes and diapers in the little side part and change him. He never liked the rocker this one came with, though, but this thing has been very useful for us.

The other things I recommend are this brush and some Aquafor or Dr Smiths ointment. We've been using Aquafor as a preventative for rash as it helps poop not stick to skin, and Dr Smiths as a restorative when no matter how much you try, they get a rash anyway.

Wipe the butt clean, get a dollop of Aquafor on the brush, a few painterly swipes and you're done. It has literally saved us hours of time across the year we've had a kid. I thought it was a dumb gimmick gift when I got it, then I used it, and my life was changed.

We've also gotten a lot of mileage out of Sleepsacks. You'll see a few different material types (cotton or fleece) and many of the newborn/small sized ones will have these wing things on them that can be used to swaddle the kid's arms in. My kid hated having his arms constricted from day 1, so we ended up just wrapping the wings around him under the armpit and it worked fine. I think this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as once you get up a bit higher in size they don't offer the swaddle wings anymore.

My son has been behaving very very badly at daycare for the bast few weeks. Hitting, pushing, DRAGGING. Nuclear meltdowns.

I feel like we're doing all the right things, and the daycare has been very helpful and not judgey, but I'm dreading pickups every day.

We've basically told him if he acts poorly he doesn't get to watch shows (since he loves tv, although he does other stuff too), but fear of future punishment isn't very effective on toddlers.

I think i'm going to make a "you did good" sticker chart, and just make sure i'm not giving out stickers for like...nothing.

This morning was pretty cool. My nephew came into my room, saw me looking at Twitter, which at the time had a photo of Venus on it. He asked what it was.

Over the next two hours we were talking about the solar system a lot, and he was full of questions and also rephrasing things as he was coming to understand them (which is great). I also included the Voyager crafts in the discussion, telling him about how Voyager 1 is far far away, and that by the time he's 12 the batteries on it will finally run out and it'll still keep going far, far away from us here on Earth.

Five minutes ago he came running back into my room going "look what I made!" He made a model of Voyager 1 using Legos, pretty damn accurate too. This kid oh my gosh.

I would've gotten a photo of it but he already started adding modifications to it and it doesn't look the same.

It's less the width from arm rest to arm rest and more the fact that the armrest section is solid and hard plastic. In a regular seat the area under the armrest is open air so there's space to expand.

If you can fit into the seats it's generally better but last time I tried it literally wedged my hip bones between the armrests and it was super painful.

Car seats are the one thing you should/HAVE to buy new. The foam does expire so they have a VERY limited lifetime (7 years I want to say?). I was under the impression second hand stores can't even sell them too.

But everything else, garage sales, used stores, salvation army, etc. Especially for clothes and bulky outer layers. My mom came by one day and gave us a coat for my 2-year old like this. Fleece lined waterproof, 3-1, looked brand new. Wasn't a birthday, she just did and I wanted to pay her back for it. She laughed and it was literally marked as $2. Even if it didn't fit, for $2, she was going to get it and then just re-donate it. It's easily a $60-80 coat.

and the other reason there is so much stuff, they age out of it so fast. Few weeks ago, after noticing the flyer at the local coffee place, a church was having a communal garage sale. We sold so much stuff that a 2.5 and 5.5 year old don't want. Swing (new, $100), we were haggled down to $35. Toys, had $1/2/5 boxes. All of our re-usable shells/inserts ($150 new), $40. Even with paying to be a part of it, buying some shelves, we still made like $100, cleaned out a room that was filling with junk. Felt so good.

Yeah, but you can't as easily tell if they've been dropped, or involved in a shunt, or had anything happen to them that would degrade their damage-absorption capabilities.

When my other half got rear-ended a few years back we called the manufacturer of our car seat and they didn't even recommend getting the seat inspected - they just said that if it had been in any sort of accident then you'd need to swap it out to make sure it would work as expected in the event of another accident.

Car seats are really something not to get used unless you know 100% it's history and can implicitly trust the person you're getting it from.

Did the 20 week ultrasound today and much to my non-surprise, it's a girl! Out of all the men in my extended family of aunts and uncles and cousins and other grandpa, only my dad, his oldest brother, and their dad of course, there has been exactly two boys produced of which I am one. That's a 2 to 13 margin. Just playing the odds might have meant to guess it had to be a boy, but I have a suspicion that there is a weak Y chromosome being passed down. Girls forever!

Pretty excited, really. We totally had boy names narrowed down though. Girl names are tough to choose! We had one good one when we found out Leah was a girl and that's what we went with. Now, though? Tough to come to a consensus thus far.

When Anya and Niko get colds/infections affecting their sinuses, they get a cough. Like me. It’s just a dry tickly cough that’s bothersome but that’s it. It happens every time and it’s just a symptom.

Every. Single. Time. @Moriveth ‘s mom thinks something is wrong with their lungs. I have taken to the kids to the doctor (as has she!) so many damn times for ‘their cough’. She is convinced Anya has a ‘chronic cough’ (because she coughs once or twice a month). Sometimes the doctor has said there’s nothing wrong at all (and I get to sound like a hypochondriac! Whee). Sometimes the kids have a sinus infection or a mild ear infection but the cough itself is not an issue.

This week they both have a bacterial infection and are on antibiotics. Once again their lungs were pronounced perfectly clear by the doctor. Their throats look good. Their ears are perfect. (Their symptoms have been fevers, hives and congestion). Mori’s mom keeps going on about their coughs. She just made Anya take a steamy shower for her ‘poor lungs’ then asked Anya if her lungs ‘felt better’ (Anya never complained that they hurt).

THEIR LUNGS ARE FIIIINE OMG SHUT UP.
