Desk Chair Suggestions

PacificstarPacificstar Registered User regular
Hey all, I'm in the market for a new desk chair. Something with a good bit of back support that I can spend long hours using. I think my budget is up to maybe $500, and I definite do not want a chair that looks like the "gaming" chairs I see online. Any suggestions?

Look at Herman Miller's lineup. The Aeron is pretty much the standard.

Herman Miller is probably your best bet because apparently all the decent desk chair manufactures got out of the business in the last five years and I say this as someone who absolutely hate mesh chairs and wishes very badly they could find a good padded breathable fabric chair

I spent a couple months lookin around though and it came down to either mesh Herman Miller chairs or chairs that were ridiculously over priced.

Go to an actual shop and try out the desk chairs there. Even the best chair doesn't fit everyone.

I've had pretty good luck with used business furniture resellers actually, although they can be hard to find depending on your area. I have a really nice chair that probably sold close to 1k new but got for about 200 and it was in pristine condition (a lot of their stock comes from places that go out of business, so some of it is hardly used at all

For 500 bucks you are going to want to put butts on chairs and see what is comfy. Do hit up office furniture suppliers. I got family that works for a supplier and every now and then I get asked if I want to buy a chair or something for like half price cause out got returned or they got sent the color and they would rather break even instead of shipping it back.

Steelcase Leap is also worthy of consideration.

This how I got my Steelcase Leap for $600. Mine was a brand new but used as a demo for a color sample. Original customer didn't like the color, I don't either to be honest, but when the chair is 50% off I can live with it.

And now I'm going to ask you for company info.

I know here we have a corporate interior company that does a lot of work for the banks. I should call them about whether they have anything they want to offload.

Thanks for the tips on used office chairs, I would definitely do that. I have a herman miller at work now, it just felt out of budget for my home. Did you all just use the googles to find reseller?

  • ChiselphaneChiselphane Registered User regular
Yeah Google is probably your best bet unless you can find someone local to give you a recommendation. The one I had gone to I had stumbled across by accident really, they didn't do any public advertising as most of their traffic was direct to businesses.

Craigslist usually has warehouses advertising extra inventory.

I was always in the "Who in their right mind would spend that much money on a chair?" camp until they gave me one of these at the office. Soooooo comfortable.

So if anyone needs tips, I talked to the office manager at my office. He recommended https://officedesignsoutlet.com/. There's a sister site which is just officedesigns.com that doesn't have discounted items. Also, if anyone else is in LA, there's a company that's called "Beverly Hills Chairs" which is also reputable.

Yeah, it's like buying a good bed - worth every penny

Agreed. After going through several cheap Staples-quality chairs in two years, I finally said, "That's it, I'm spending the big money now" and bought a Herman Miller Aeron, a decision which I don't regret.

Beds, chairs, and shoes, don't be afraid to spend money on quality for these items.

Can I get some opinions on these two chairs I found on ebay? They're pretty cheap and I can get a further 10% off. They both have arm rests and can be raised high enough for my desk. Plus they have free shipping.

First one has a metal frame which might make it more durable, and the second one has a cushion, but I'm worried the back support could snap due to it being being really cheap.

Really don't want to spend too much on a chair, but I also know that you get what you pay for and I'll probably be disappointed in some way. I'm guessing I might end up needing to buy a cushion for the first chair, but if I get the other chair I'm worry the back support could snap.

Likely cheap replica garbage for those prices.

    I recommend SecretLab's stealth models:
    https://secretlab.co/us

When I changed apartments last week, the plastic molding on the bottom right of my Omega cracked off, exposing the coil that keeps the chair aligned. I made them aware and asked if I could purchase a replacement part (I knew this was my fault) but they're sending me the molding for free. That was really nice of them.

Don't order cheap office chairs online - they will be wobbly crap. If you want cheap office chairs, try them first in real life. Sometimes you can pick them up from office sales. I got a really great chair secondhand from my old office.

The Radar Plus chair I linked seemed sturdy enough when I tried it today, but I only sat on it briefly. I might visit the store again sometime to try it once more.

The secret lab chairs are way out of my price range, plus I really don't want to deal with the PU leather chairs anymore. The chair I mentioned is probably the highest I'm willing to spend on a chair to be honest.

I bought this off amazon about 3 months ago and love it.

easy to put together, sturdy, and comfortable. I imagine I'll eventually need to get a cushion though maybe not.

While trying the chairs in store, I ended up passing on the Radar Plus because I noticed the mesh around the corners was a little frayed and would probably worsen with time.

I got this chair instead, as it's more comfortable due to the cushioning and it has an easy to use seat tilt for when I want to lean back for a while. It was $29 more though but I'm happy with the end product.

I hope I don't have to replace this any time soon, but if I do it supposedly has a 10 year warranty.

I've noticed that you can buy Rollerblade wheel sets on Amazon. Are they:

    1) easy to install
    2) worth the $15 US or so?

I seem to remember the Rollerblade wheels being better for wood floors and a bit more durable, but do they make your chair roll around *too* much?
