As far as i know the only way to guarantee you get a real badge is to buy them directly from the PAX site, or from PAX staff on site the day of. And I'm not even sure that second option exists for PAX West and East since they tend to completely sell out. I've only been to South.

There's a PAX subforum(s) here that you might be able to find a little more information, but I'll paste the relevant bit from the Badge sales from secondary sources part of the West FAQ.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING BUYING PASSES FROM SECONDARY SOURCES

I just bought a pass on craigslist / ebay, how do I know if it's legit?
This really won't apply until after PAX WEST passes go on sale and subsequently sell out. If you purchase your pass from a second hand source, you are putting yourself at risk of purchasing a counterfeit pass. Second hand sources also include this forum, which is why there is no buy/sell/trade of pax passes on this forum.

AT PAX you can have badges verified by badge-checking enforcers outside the show. There is no way to verify a second-hand badge prior to being at PAX.

I've never heard of people selling PAX tickets on StubHub so I can't answer your question on that but I myself have sold extra tickets through Craigslist (work gave them out for free and I sold the original tickets I bought for face value).

It's definitely buyer beware. If you can wrangle buying them in person (in a well-lit public place), I'd say that's your best bet.

Stubhub is safer than Craigslist, but you only get a refund if the tickets are fake, and stubhub tries to get their money back. That being said if you do order tickets on stubhub, pax tickets usually arrive 2-3 weeks before the event (counterfeit prevention), which means the person has to get them and turn them around within a day or two so the person receiving them will have them 1-2 weeks before hand. If you know some other paxers in your area, you may want to compare your pass to theirs.

Now I have both purchased and sold pax east tix on craigslist because of plans changing, and doing it at pax, is easy to validate...in fact if you are super nice you might even be able to have an off duty enforcer take a look to make sure it is legit.

It would very highly depend on if Stubhub has the same guarantees for PAX that they do for, say, baseball games. If I buy a ticket for a ballgame on Stubhub, if something goes wrong they will probably have someone present at the venue that can take care of it and they will work to make it right. I doubt they have that short of relationship with PAX, which means that if (in the probably unlikely, but still more than 0% chance) you get a fake, the only thing they're going to be able to do is refund you. Which is more than you get with Craigslist, but still.
