It's kind of weird how much they dialed back the final fantasy characters after KH2.
Zack in BBS is the only new FF character they've added since then.
Hopefully we'll get a few new ones in KH3
Very early DDD spoiler cause I don't know how much Mr.G knows about it.
The TWEWY kids at the beginning of DDD we're a real nice addition though.
Make a Shibuya world for Kingdom Hearts 3 for the love of God. Remaster the music and I will never leave it.
Well
About halfway through DDD
they kinda can't. The TWEWY kids whole deal in DDD is that their world got destroyed and they're all dead. Joshua basically just managed to save their memory ghost thingers so they can come back if their world is ever restored.
Death never stopped anyone in KH before now, really.
True, I mean
They were already dead when TWEWY began and that didn't stop them from doing things.
Here's one thing that I can't decide if it's a retcon or not
I know in KH1 it was called Destiny IslandS
but it sure seemed like that island was the whole place
and then KH2 and BBS talk about and show "the mainland" which I don't think was ever mentioned in the first game
Maybe that's just me being a dummy
The island where you can run around in the 1st game is just a very tiny island that the kids use as a backyard, basically. When Sora leaves his house during the storm in the 1st game, you can see him look out the window to the island. They don't really get into it, but the world seems to be a string of islands, with the largest one being 'the mainland' where their houses and schools are and stuff. In KH2 during a cutscene, Selphie asks Kairi if she wants to go to 'the island' after school, which is probably the one they always hang out

KH has also established
that if a person's Heartless and Nobody are both killed the person just comes back as a whole being. So really, the only way to die 100% in-universe is for a "whole" to be outright murdered.

I wonder how fucking pissed the rest of the Org 13 members were when they found that out.
I'm hoping they'll be allies in the next game, since I imagine they have a score to settle with Xehanort for leading them on like that.
On the subject of the Destiny Islands, it really bugs me that he and Riku seem to have made no effort to contact their hometown. They've been off adventuring between worlds for years now in the game timeline, and I'm sure their families think they're dead. Or have had their memories hacked to forget them, which is even sadder somehow. Maybe it's just that I was closer to standard RPG protagonist age when the first game came out, and now I'm protagonist's-dad age. But I mean, damn Sora, you ungrateful little shit, take two minutes to send home a postcard, or maybe ask Kairi how your mom is doing since she was back home until KH2.

I've always been under the impression that between the ending of KH2 and when Mickey sends that letter that starts the events of Dream Drop Distance, that some time has passed.
I also don't know if Kairi...has parents? Like,
She's originally from Radiant Garden, and we still don't know exactly how she got from there to Destiny Islands.
also I have finished Aqua's story and I'll move on to (watching) the epilogue + secret ending
I'll say this thing better be an earthshaker cause otherwise this game's reputation as being massively important on the main series has been vastly overblown, all of the character's stories have been fairly barren, mostly filler and then a little bit of stuff at the end and cuts off before it actually goes anywhere

You're going to laugh, but the REAL importance of BBS really only manifests itself in KH3D, since it informs the motivation of both the final villain, as well lays out an objective for the heroes in KH3.

Kairi doesn't have parents on the island, yeah. There's a flashback to when she first arrived that talks about her living at the mayor's house. I meant she might have known Sora's mom and whatever other family he may have had, and he could have asked her about them after their reunion.
Sora's whole "very special person" deal being wrapped up in how deeply he allegedly cares for people, willing to literally share bits of his soul, rings kind of hollow when he seems to have literally forgotten his own mom.

Xehanort then escapes as Sora suddenly realizes how long it's been and flips out trying to find some kind of phone right now.

worlds can be restored. Hell, you could totally narratively swing the idea that restoring the Dream Traverse Town keyhole restored Shibuya, because that version of Traverse Town created itself for Joshua's need.
Plus, I mean, we have Joshua here. If he's anywhere near as powerful as he is in TWEWY, he could be able to restore the world if he has the right materials.

Is Hikaru Utada like a big star in Japan or something?
I do find it weird that the spinoffs don't bother to get a new song made and just...reuse one of the two
Chain of Memories and Birth By Sleep use Simple & Clean, 358 Days uses Sanctuary
She wanted to do music for the others, but she also wanted more money since the series had gotten way more popular by that point, and Disney said no. This is just conjecture, but I also wouldn't be surprised if there was some quarrel related to residuals on copies sold, since the game industry really sucks about paying its talent.

Square/Disney did their best to fuck her over.
They have since made amends both monetarily and relationship wise, and she's confirmed that she's doing the KH3 theme.
She doesn't get ENOUGH credit really. She does her themes in both japanese and english with no dip in the quality of the performance.
Alright, now I've seen all the story stuff in Birth By Sleep
and I'm a liiiiiiiittle let down by it, cause I thought it would cover more of the gap and instead just kinda jumps over it
It's good stuff, but I don't...understand the significance of a lot of it, primarily what's up with any of the leads
Status of the three leads:
Terra: body hijacked by Xehanort. Later in when X gets split into "Ansem" and Xemnas, both seem to retain some aspect of Terra inside them. KH2 Final Mix has some cutscenes that imply Xemnas has a desire to see his friends again, and is searching for them. There are hints that the dark shadow character that pops out of "Ansem" in his boss fights over the course of the series is an aspect of Terra. With the defeat of X's heartless and nobody Terra's current status is unclear.
Ventus: His body is hidden in Castle Oblivion and only Aqua knows exactly where. His heart is inside Sora, which is why Sora's nobody Roxas ends up not looking like Sora.
Aqua: Trapped in the dark world, wandering and trying to find a way out. Is there for years, as she met Ansem after he got sent there post-KH2. Is still there.
Rescuing the three of them will likely be a big part of KH3, along with probably Roxas, Namine, and Xion to get the whole gang together.
The main significance of BBS is Xehanort. Establishing exactly who he is and what he wants.
Also you played the final main Aqua segment right? Not the secret thing, but the segment you get for having the three stories done.
I couldn't play it, I lost my Ventus save so I had to just watch it
I don't know if there's stuff missing but here's what I did see
Aqua meets with Ansem, Terra and Xehanort are gonna stand around and stare at each other, Ventus becomes a part of Sora
and then a thing I saw later cause I guess that video didn't include it was Aqua wandering around Evil Dark Land until she comes across a castle, which I assume is the setup for Fragmentary Passage
Heartless also started showing up but I didn't catch the explanation for that and I spent the whole game waiting for something on that

Oh jeeze okay you haven't actually seen the real ending then, it looks like.
Once you complete the three stories an additional Aqua segment starts up where you pick up where the three individual endings leave off and she fights Xehanort and other big stuff happens.
After that comes the Blank Points and Fragmentary Passage stuff, which are the secret unlockables.

The main thing I thought was missing from this that it pretty much skips over
Alright so all these future Organization 13 folks are hanging out together, so they all know each other
What exactly happened there, then?
Maybe I just forgot about them covering this in KH2, but I guess I just don't know how this all got started with them where they ALL went Nobody'd and decided to still hang out together, even though I thought you didn't remember your prior self as a Nobody but whatever

Not...quite?
They just
All lived in the same city that got fuckin obliterated thanks to "Ansem's" non-sense.

Actually nobodies do remember their previous lives. Roxas was the exception, possibly because when he was born from Sora's body three hearts were in there(Sora, Kairi, Ven) so it fucked things up maybe.
Ansem's original apprentices were working together and continued to do so as Nobodies, and then they recruited the other Org members sometime later.

They all went Nobody because they all went Heartless when Xehanort purposefully fucked up an experiment regarding hearts. In KH1 the ansem (who is actually xehanort and just calling himself Ansem) reports talk about artificially creating Heartless and running experiments trying to figure out how to access the heart of all worlds. As a result of this experiment, which results in Radiant Garden basically blowing up and becoming Hollow Bastion,
along with a bunch of other worlds falling into darkness. Since most of Org 13 were also there, they became Heartless and Nobodies as well.
EDIT: The very extremely rough timeline:
BBS epilogue happens, Aqua gets sent to the realm of darkness, but manages to save Terra/Xehanort and sends them back to the realm of light.
The Real Ansem's crew finds him, he calls himself Xehanort, becomes Ansem's apprentice.
Xehanort runs experiments involving the Heartless, the hearts of worlds, and Kingdom Hearts
Said experiment goes amok, unleashes tons of Hearthless/Darkness, destroys a bunch of worlds., including the Destiny Island.
Xehanort's Heartless, since he was ALSO caught in the experiment, goes back to Destiny Islands, starts events of KH1. Xehanort's Nobody then assumedly concurrently creates Org 13.
Ansem's Heartless is defeated, during which Sora turns himself into a Heartless by using the keyblade towards the end of KH1. Roxas is then created, and 358/2 happens concurrently with Chain of Memories. Xehanort tries to find Ventus, but can't due to the voodoo that Aqua did on the Land of Departure and turning it into Castle Oblivion and what it does to memories and such.
You know a lot of the villain stuff would be easier to keep track of if they just named Christopher Lee's character Xehanort and let Ansem be the dude's real name instead of the musical chairs they play with their names as it is

Yes.
Xehanort (in Terra's body) is found in Radiant Garden by the real Ansem. He joins Ansem in his research and eventually betrays him and turns his apprentices + Braig into the first half of Org XIII.

Yeah the weirdness with the names in KH1 and 2 is really dumb and contrived

In kh1 sora lives in a house elsewhere and has to row out to the island in a small boat. There's a shot of his room and his mom calling out to him.

along with a bunch of other worlds falling into darkness.
KH2 happens
Yes.
Yeah the weirdness with the names in KH1 and 2 is really dumb and contrived
