[Canadian Politics] Supreme Court rules on interprovincial sour grapes

Canadian Politics, eh?

So these hosers finished up a thread while Parliament was on vacation over the summer. That means we're getting a desperation theme: Canadian Federal Politicians with Cute Cuddly Animals!

It was harder than I thought.

But not when it comes to the Prime Minister!

6y7fxyr4ifji.jpg

Here's Justin Trudeau, Liberal PM of Canada. Foreigners love him! Canadians love to be ambivalent about him! But he doesn't hesitate to denounce Nazis and he sure looks good cuddling pandas, so we'll keep him.

wnfpa2d56q73.jpg

And here's the newly minted leader of the Conservative opposition, Andrew Scheer. He's so newly-minted I couldn't find any pictures of him cuddling animals, so this is what we get. Hey, I'm not the one who called him "Stephen Harper with a smile." He did that to himself!

47iwrap66dsc.jpg

Update, October 2017: Ontario MPP Jagmeet Singh has become the new leader of the NDP! Here he is with a pet CBC personality.

tta2lvpdn8sw.jpg

Did you know the Bloc Quebecois has a new leader? I had to look it up, which I believe makes me an official Western Canadian now. Her name is Martine Ouellet and despite having been in provincial politics for some time, she appears not to have cuddled any animals on-camera.

i1tnzu9n1gtk.jpg

Of course we can count on Green Party leader Elizabeth May to have a genuine animal-cuddling picture!

Canadian Cude and Cuddly Animal News!

BC just outlawed grizzly bear trophy hunting starting in 2018. I recommend against cuddling grizzly bears, though.

Moose v Canada 150 Tulip Display

Record number of whooping crane births in NWT this year!

Calgary Rescue Beavers Become Best Buddies

Bears, beavers, moose... yep, we got 'em all.

In conclusion,

I did not. I have heard literally nothing from the Bloc since the last election. Not a single peep. I'd all but forgotten they were there.

She was acclaimed as leader, hasn't resigned her seat in the National Assembly, and she's not planning to seek a seat in the HoC via by-election. So it seems like there's a decent chance we may never hear anything from the Bloc ever again.

Oof, looks like it's Vancouver's turn to do the "far right rally organized by a hate group met with Rather More counterprotesters" thing today.

No idea if it's lining up with the Boston rallies on purpose or not, but hopefully the day goes by without it blowing up.

I'm anxious about another one of these showing up in Halifax. The last one fizzled out like the pathetic flash in the pan it was, but I worry about people getting more fired up about a rematch. Blah.

New thread? New reminder that Michelle Rempel is a scumbag who just occasionally says a nice thing about women or gays on Twitter, which should not be mistaken for a general ability to empathize with other human beings:

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel accused the government of “attempting to put a band-aid on a giant hole in a dam that has already burst.” She told the Star that new housing for asylum seekers will only encourage more to come and blamed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for creating a perception that Canada will be more welcoming to refugees.

“I don’t understand why the government is making an effort to set up shanty towns and refugee camps when we’re about to go into the winter, instead of saying: ‘This is illegal — we’re going to use all of the resources and processes, that have been long in place, to ensure that only those with legitimate claims are entering Canada,” Rempel said.

Yeah Rempel. Letting people freeze to death in the winter sure would be a very effective way to discourage refugees from coming to Canada. I don't understand why we're not doing that either. Why didn't Harper use the resource of Canadian winters and the process of doing nothing to ensure only those with legitimate claims are entering Canada, again??

The question is, do the Conservative really believe that there's no processing of refugees and that they are automatically accepted, or are they just trying to create the impression that there's no processing of refugees and that Canada is getting flooded by new immigrants for some obscure reason.
Well, I'm using "question" in the rhetorical sense here. They are clearly trying to encourage xenophobia and to win the xenophobic vote.

Urg. At least I still have two acceptable parties at the federal level.

I am shocked, shocked, that it turns out a right-wing party is full of and catering to vile racists and bigots. Who would have expected that from conservatism? I'm sure somewhere the principled conservatives will take a stand against this.

I'm not sure if this is rhetorical... because back when Harper was PM the US had not yet elected a full-on white supremacist to the presidency who encouraged fucking Nazi rallies and terrorist attacks in his damn country, so there wasn't a stream of thousands of scared refugees fleeing north from the USA and forced to enter illegally to avoid being turned back under the "safe third country" agreement. This is a problem that literally did not exist even one year ago.

There's essentially zero evidence of racists or nazis actually showing up.

One nazi showed up, did the nazi salute, and bike cops quickly rounded him up and removed him.

It went about as well as it could have gone.

I love the video with the jazz band playing and the counter-protestors dancing and cheering and generally having a good time. Like, it is way more fun to not be busy hating people.

I also wonder how much of the CBC's elder readership is very confused at those off-the-cuff references to Pepe the Frog and Kekistan. I envy people who don't know what that crap is.

Today in Quebec City (Can't find English source, sorry.): the anti-rcism counterprotest in Quebec City declared illegal

La Meute (Anti-immigration alt-right group in the province.) and the counter protesters clashed. Not a whole lot of info came out, but apparently it's the counter-protest that's been declared illegal while La Meute's been more discreet?

I'm not going to assume anything just yet, but i feel like this isn't good overall.

  • CelloCello Registered User regular
CBC's 24 hour news reporting that La Meute got cornered in the basement of a parking garage, so that's probably why.

From what I'm reading, it's more that about 600 racist fuckers decided to gather in said basement before their anti-human rights protests, and are afraid to come out of there because about 10-20 anti-xenophobia counter-protesters learned it and are waiting for them outside.
The racist fuckers who defame wolves have police protection, while those counter-protesters do not.

My understanding is that there's two counter-protests, only one of which was declared illegal, and that was after this set of counter-protesters went after the police keeping them from going after the wolf defamers.

  • mrondeaumrondeau Montréal, CanadaRegistered User regular
After a few hours of pretending they are being oppressed and denied the right of free expression, the xenophobes are now exercising their right of free expression in the safe-space the police, and presumably boredom for the counter-protesters, have created for them.

Pretty much the least eventful protest in Quebec I've ever read about. Though I guess the crazy ones usually happen in Montreal.

Looking at CBC's investigation of the group, they aren't racist, but nationalistic and islamophobic. Any racist post is quickly dealt with by their moderators. The anti-protesters looked to be far more violent, and unlike the La Meute wore masks and bandanas to hide their faces. The anti-protesters also attacked the media.

From the images and videos I'm looking it at the La Meute won the image battle.

I mean, La Meute did get rid of the few members who were seen at Charlotteville. They're certainly not an openly white supremacist organization.

But I don't like nationalistic movements. I don't like islamophobia. I don't like that group's ideas on expulsing all immigrants.

Yep. They are just very good at enforcing message discipline and keeping just within the limit of the law. The gaggle objective is no different from the nazi's down south, they are just better at presenting a "clean" image, so that people like Frostwood can fool themselves into supporting them, or at least opposing their opponents.

EDIT: just so it's clear, the word "meute" means "wolfpack", with the same connotations of "attack in group" and "vicious animals" present in English. That's not the name of a pacifist group.

I was admiring their handiwork, the group was very disciplined in not engaging with the anti-protesters and seemed relatively mellow compared to the people in all-black get ups who looked like professional protesters. They also have a pretty cool symbol to go with their group.

What I saw was a dangerous political party forming, if I'm right they will probably replace the PQ in a few years.

Fair enough on the second, although "replacing" is probably not the right word, and the CAQ is a more likely target if there's replacement.

In the case of this specific xenophobic excursion, they are opposed to Haitian refugees, so even ignoring this Islam is not a race thing (hint: they don't object to white converts), it's racism.

Yeah there is zero Fucking chance they go after white Muslims.

oh ok then, they're not racist, they're only bigots because they hate a group of people based on their religion, which is obviously much more acceptable than hate based on skin colour. Big fucking difference, that.
There is no difference. They are horrible people and anyone who "both sides" then is equally horrible and a racism apologist.

Listening to Radio-Canada (Montreal, French) right now and they're interviewing one of the organizers of the counter-protest.

And by "Interviewing", i mean they were grilling him. He did not want to "denounce" the violent counter protests because those weren't part of the counter-protest he organized and, like, the interviewer gave him a hard time about all this. As a spokesperson for a specific group of people, he felt it wasn't his place to denounce people outside of his group.

This feels like such a fucking double standard.

This was a huge victory for La Meute and it steams my cabbage something fierce.

What I saw was a dangerous political party forming, if I'm right they will probably replace the PQ in a few years.

I think you're exaggerating here. They are not forming a political party. They have none of what it takes: no economic agenda, no social agenda beyond "fuck immigrants", no political expertise or cloud, no public support, and most importantly no stated interest in making one.

They came out of yesterday looking decent by comparison to the Black Bloc morons using violence and vandalism, but that minor victory will be forgotten soon enough.

The former Dept. of Indiginous Affairs has been re-orged. On the surface, it looks pretty good... emphasis on reducing paternalism, having nation-to-nation relationships, some funding improvements, and the eventual aim of replacing the Indian Act. I'm sure I'm not catching everything, though. Will be interested to see how various First Nations communities respond.

The website The 10 and The 3 have done a survey on regional variances in Canadian English.

According to my wife (who originally hails from The 'Peg), Bunnyhug has bled over to some parts of Manitoba as well.

And every time I go visit her family and friends and they sneer as they say ToronTO I smirk a little.

I've never heard the term bunnyhug before, which is odd, because I know people from Saskatchewan, and I've spent most of my life in southern Alberta. You'd think proximity would be a factor.
