because harvey wasn't enough, we are getting a new hurricane called irma! it will more than likely obliterate the entire southeastern united states, leaving nothing but a wind-blasted wasteland where the few survivors fight over scraps and worship old-world technology. or maybe not that bad, but that bad in some places? I'm sitting pretty in northern florida but everyone is still freaking out! Anyone else affected by this?

One of my good friends asked if I can possibly help with cleanup next week on his grandparents' property if they get hit particularly bad; not sure exactly where their winter home is, but it's likely coastal

He only needs me if his father and brother can't set up a flight to SC and meet him halfway; otherwise I'll be helping to manage the 22 hour drive and do some basic cleanup

Not sure their exact location but iirc it's coastal, which seems Not Good, Generally

And another storm right behind Irma, Jose I think. Plus the PNW is on fire and it was raining light ash all over the Seattle area today.

We told you this would happen! We told you about climate change!

Man, it's Cataclysm all over again. We even have the xenophobic warmonger in charge, after the cool chill guy (who still had faults) left.

way way too early to tell where that one is going in relation to the us

we can only hope it takes a sharp north turn at some point as some tropical storms tend to do

Around half of my family is in Florida, mostly in the Palm Beach area. They're all hurricane vets though, and also Mormons for the most part, which means that keeping a well-stocked emergency preparedness hoard is treated literally as a commandment from God. So I'm not super worried about anyone's safety, because they are all very sensibly heading inland and north with huge stashes of supplies. But I am worried that a few of them will wind up homeless.

When I was a boy scout I helped with cleanup and water delivery after a couple bigger storms there, and I still have stress dreams sometimes that I'm looking out of my stepdad's jeep at the wreckage after Hurricane Andrew, being turned around by the national guard because it's not safe to let volunteers in yet.

Realizing lately that I don't really trust or respect basically any of the moderators here. So, good luck with life, friends! Hit me up on Twitter @DesertLeviathan

My parents have a condo in the north palm beach-ish area.
I think their condo is on the seaward facing side of the building.
Luckily they're not there at the moment, but I'm guessing the condo will still be hit.

When they were renovating, they had some special kind of hurricane shutters/blockades on the outward facing door/window, so hopefully they're not impacted much by it.

My parents are going to stay with my brother in Alabama. They were on their way south to Florida (snow birds) when Irma got changed to Cat5+.

I told them to wait another week but they didn't want to.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me
