Cuphead
Developed and Published by Studio MDHR
Created in Unity
Released on September 29th, 2017
Platforms: Xbox One & Steam
Cuphead is a run and gun platform indie video game developed and published by StudioMDHR Entertainment. As the titular character Cuphead, the player fights a series of bosses in order to repay a debt to the devil. The game was heavily inspired by the works of 1930s cartoonists such as Max Fleischer's Fleischer Studios, and sought to keep the works' subversive and surrealist qualities.

Only played for 10 minutes, but I fucking love it. The art and sound of the 1930s cartoon aesthetic is perrrrrrrrfect. The game will be difficult for those who do not like platformers, like really difficult. This is for sure to be the Contra of the 21st century.
The Polygon review indicates the game isn't as difficult as previews would let you believe, as long as you're willing to learn. At least until the final boss stuff.

Was on the fence but that might have just sold me.

Again, I've only played for 10 minutes today. I'm saving it for when my friend gets out of work and we're gonna co-op it. But I've seen maybe 5 boss fights and they all look very challenging. Having another player on the screen will just make it more hectic as well.
The parry system takes a little getting use to but it's okay once you get the handle. Also builds your super meter quicker.
Lots of style, great animations and the music *chefs kiss*. It's tricky as cute as it is and haven't tried co-op so can't tell if health of bosses scales up.

My Contra 3-trained brain required me to switch the buttons for dashing and weapon switch (especially since I'm using an SNES30), but other than that, it's been great. Got two bosses down during lunch break and seems pretty fuckin tight.
The only thing I think is actually impossible right now is A+ on the second Forest Run'n'Gun. I bolted to the end, doing nothing else, and still didn't get gold time.

Yeah, I'm going to have to completely ignore the grading system, because it will be a great accomplishment for me to just beat this game one day. Failure has never looked so damn good before though.

i'd agree with that assessment, its difficult certainly but never feels punishing or unfair. definitely not as bad was i was expecting. still in the early game though, only tried a couple of bosses and the first platforming level though, so can't speak for the overall learning curve.

freaking hard playing it on a keyboard with default key bindings.
I'm just here sitting here, sad, waiting for my batteries to charge before I can play the game as intended.

Cuphead is hella classy just in presentation and story alone, and is challenging but not hard. This makes than reporter who couldn't dash and who continually tried to hop on characters just......damn bro, you hella failed man.
This is what indie games should be fam, not deliberate lolz spritez, give me something novel for an old school shooter/platformer. And it syncs up perfectly with dat boi!
I guess my only problem is trying to get your mind to parry anything pink when you spend so much trying to not die.
It's certainly not cheap, but it's definitely hard.
The contra comparison is quite spot on. Sure it's not 1 hit kill, but contra had lives that let you start over in the stage right from where you died (until all gone of course), whereas cuphead has more than 1 hit and infinite continues, but has more happening on screen most of the time and you have to restart the whole stage/boss from the start when you die... so that is a wash to me pretty much.
But the presentation is excellent. I just need to get my oldschool shooter chops back since it's been so long since I've really played one that has been quite this challenging.

on some of the bosses, how are you supposed to know when to parry when things aren't pink (like the blue le grande slime guy?)

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem. I'm using a legacy controller so not steam, Xbox, or PS4 as I am a poor man.
Anyway, it works in everything except the menus? When I press "any button" to start the game it'll take me to the main menu and then my controller does nothing. I have to use the arrow keys.
I can walk around the world map but to actually visit a stage I have to press enter on my keyboard. Minor squabble but has anyone had this happen to them before?

Rebound.
That is the weapon you want. Super classy and powerful as long as you realize to turn around.

Okay, after putting in some time with real controllers, I'm convinced that I should never get opinions from the game journalists because this game isn't no where as difficult as they were making it out to be. This game is no harder then Metal Slug 2/3. Hell, one could argue that Cuphead is much better balanced then Metal Slug because Metal Slug was designed to drain you of your money.
Other then that, this game is damn near fucking PERFECT! My only complaint is that I wish they didn't caved into all those people whining about it being strictly a boss rush game, because those run and guns levels are so few and far in between and nowhere as creative as the boss fights.

I could never figure out when he was doing a long bounce or a short one. I think there's an audio cue but I couldn't pick up on it.
Favorite boss so far is the plane one.

I ended up getting this today because I couldn't resist how awesome the graphics were. I figured even if the game sucked, it'd still be nice to look at. I'm having fun with the game and it is hard but not soul crushingly hard like reviews have made it seem. It can suck having to go all the way back on some stages, but the stages and bosses really aren't long enough (yet) to make that really shitty. The music is also really good. The attention to detail in the presentation is simply amazing. Rarely these days does a game's graphics really grab my attention.
I just completed the first World, took me about 2 hours. I only got one A+, lowest rating I got was C+, so I coulda done a bit better. The spread weapon is really good but short range. I feel like buying that early on helped quite a bit at taking down the bosses.
Oh and playing with a Switch Pro Controller makes it fun too

But EVERYONE get that dang smokebomb and the game sort of turns into Bloodborne
This game is a fresh challenge from all the platformers I've played recently. Def going to take a lot of lesson learned from this into my own creations.

Haha, I do love me some Metal Slug 3--and I'm glad it is balanced in a way arcade titles simply weren't. Plus 95% of my play of it would be on console, so check the box on on a real controller.
I don't have the same fondness for the art style that other people do (I think it is technically remarkable and praiseworthy, it just isn't something I personally like), so really the gameplay experience is what matters for me, and I've largely fallen out with platformers around the time I returned my original 3DS.
On the other hand, Inside has become my new benchmark for an amazing $10 to $20 platforming game experience (even though it is, obviously, a radically different game without a shooting aspect), especially after not being that impressed with Limbo. This might become my new Inside at this rate. I think I'm putting it on my wishlist just below Sonic Mania, simply because that one came out first and is a bit cheaper.

The moment I read 'invincibility frames' it was a no brainier. I'm surprised it's one of the first thing you can get.
Just finished the first world and this game is the right level of hard. Got to the flower boss last night and thought he was bullshit so I went to bed. Got up this morning, immediately saw the pattern and beat him on like 4 tries.
The pond that tells you how many times you've died is a fun addition.

i was kidding. i honestly don't care whether someone is good at games or not, not even if they cover them professionally.
You can only parry pink things.
Parry the question marks.
