I know we have a bunch of IT people in here, quick question for y'all.
My sister is getting her PhD and working in a lab, and they've agreed to buy her a computer to use for her work. We put our heads together and ended up deciding on a Macbook, for various reasons, but one of which is that it can run both Mac-only and Windows-only software if necessary.
After she made her request, though, she was told by IT that they don't allow computers running both MacOS and Windows through Bootcamp. I'm not looking to give her talking points to PROVE THEM WRONG or whatever because I doubt it'd do any good even if they are wrong, but I am curious about why they might have such a policy.
Possible reasons:
Users are dumb and boot camp is not basic entry level use case.
Licensing issues with two operating systems on a single asset.
Nobody in the department knows how bootcamp works so they can't support it.
Non-standard deployments are annoying.
Arcane networking reasons???
"If she wants a Mac, why doesn't she just get a Mac and own the damn decision." i.e IT person was annoyed when you asked.
Interesting. They did mention "security reasons", although I guess that could just be cover.
She can't just "own the Mac decision" because there are obscure imaging programs she'll need to use that only work on Windows, and some that only work on Mac, although she thinks she might be able to get around using the Mac-only ones.
I thought about posting a [chat] about the current burning hellscape that is the Bay Area, but it just depresses me too much. The fire, it burns! And it's still ongoing, too.

The security reason might also be that it's a windows box that might end up effectively unmanaged.
Pure windows machines call home to the domain whenever they're being used, get new policies and updates.
A dual boot machine? Who knows when it's checking in, when updates are getting applied.

like, aside from apple-produced software and some specialist stuff for doing mac/ios development... I'm not really aware of any major software suites that don't have a windows version

I don't know the specifics, but this wouldn't be a major software suite, it would be some tiny independent program, probably written by some other PhD student who needed it for their own lab analysis.

We're being "punished" in the same way you would be "punished" for touching a hot stove by getting burned.
There's a pretty direct cause/effect relationship going on here, I think.
But if there were ever a time to look to your god and beg for forgiveness, that time is now!
Because folks, I don't know if you've heard the latest, but we ain't getting out of this one unscathed.
Hurricanes and typhoons will grow ever more powerful. The ice caps will melt. Forests and the homes near them will burn. The coastlines will be submerged. And all at a faster and faster rate, until it's all happening too quickly for us to keep up. And a lucky few of us will be living in places that will survive ALL of this mostly unscathed, but the damage to trade, infrastructure, agriculture, logistics, refugee populations ... it'll be catastrophic.

Holy crap reading about the fire now and they're saying it advanced at a rate of over a football field every 3 seconds. That's horrifying.

fair enough
another thing,
on a base level, part of not giving people multiple computers is not having to support multiple computers
sure, the hardware cost is the same, but licensing and IT support doubles
well support probably doesn't double, but still more than a single single-OS mac or windows box

It sounds like getting the Mac plus a really dinky Windows machine is an option, though, so I dunno if that's what's happening here.
Plus this isn't like a corporate environment. She's getting the laptop, I guess IT's going to set it up, and then further support is going to be minimal. She'll be doing most troubleshooting on her own.
IT guys probably don't give a shit and hate having to support Macs at all, so will take any tack to get someone to avoid it (or at least make that machine solely the Mac Guy's problem)
Academia is one of the notorious industries for IT people (along with Law and Healthcare) and generally people who are any good at it get out and work anywhere else.

Now on to more pressing matters - former Blink-182 singer and guitarist Tom DeLonge has claimed that he's going to reveal the truth about aliens.
Over the years DeLonge has been an avid believer in extra terrestrial life, writing songs like 'Aliens Exist' and showing his passion of exposing another world.
It's led to ridicule from many people and perhaps had a hand in him leaving the band, but he still believes we're not alone.
In an Instagram post he revealed that tomorrow he's making an announcement that's two years in the making, claiming it might just change the world.
