Interesting. They did mention "security reasons", although I guess that could just be cover.
She can't just "own the Mac decision" because there are obscure imaging programs she'll need to use that only work on Windows, and some that only work on Mac, although she thinks she might be able to get around using the Mac-only ones.

I don't know the specifics, but this wouldn't be a major software suite, it would be some tiny independent program, probably written by some other PhD student who needed it for their own lab analysis.

It sounds like getting the Mac plus a really dinky Windows machine is an option, though, so I dunno if that's what's happening here.
Plus this isn't like a corporate environment. She's getting the laptop, I guess IT's going to set it up, and then further support is going to be minimal. She'll be doing most troubleshooting on her own.
IT guys probably don't give a shit and hate having to support Macs at all, so will take any tack to get someone to avoid it (or at least make that machine solely the Mac Guy's problem)
