The only real reason to use the Red 9 over the Blacktail. Although, once you unlock the tommy gun (whoops sorry the Chicago Typewriter), there's really no need to carry any other weapon at all.

I like the chicago typewriter to mess around with but never ended up using it outside of once or twice because it was too much of a cheat weapon, and made everything less fun just from how powerful it was

Looking for something that felt like it belonged to the same family as that without breaking the game is actually how I started using (and loving) the TMP

Switching to all my different weapons and reloading them after a crazy encounter is the best part of RE4

I have RE4 in my backlog. Perhaps I will finish it for Halloween.

I kind of hate every RE game after Code: Veronica though.

RE4 is WAY better than Code Veronica though. For starters, no Steve.

From a gameplay perspective, I guess.

I tend to mark Code: Veronica as the last classical "survival horror" entry of the franchise.

After that the tone of the games changed.

I will agree with that to an extent (though Remake and Zero are still in the same style), but I also showed that at the time, Capcom didn't really have much of an idea of what else to do with that style. Zero I think was the nail in the coffin for that. RE4 took so long to come out (at the time) because they kept on hitting a roadblock on what to do with the game and make it good.

In terms of fun stuff about the game, I always got a laugh at Ashley fist pumping everytime you kill an enemy while she is hiding behind you. The same "yes!" reaction I'm having in my head.

Oh yeah, I don't use it on a serious playthrough. But if I just wanna burn half a lazy Saturday drinking and blasting ganados, I'll fire up a save with it unlocked from the start and just turn everything to mince.

I have the Wii version of RE4 and RE Revelations on 3DS. I've only played a few minutes of both, but with halloween coming up, I feel like playing them.

    Some tips-
Treasure can be combined and upgraded.
There are points in the village where you can and should back track the areas will be mostly empty so you can explore at your leisure.

Yes! Flash grenades kill the shit out of the gross dealios that come out of ganados and zealots if you pop their heads off with the pistol, and the whippy bastard tentacle things that split open the zombie dogs backs too. You can also use one on a clustered group of ganados/zealots to stun them all, then run up and kick them ALL with a roundhouse, which knocks them all down and lets you knife the shit out of them to save ammo.

One of the reasons I'm happy I played through the game a lot is that it taught me to use the melee options properly and consequently saved me a ton of ammo on the higher difficulties.

RE4 tip because I was recently surprised to learn some folks don't know about it (kept relatively spoiler-free):

later in the game Leon meets a new villain and several quicktime events happen that amount to a single, incredibly long knife fight

in addition to be really extremely cool, this long-ass cutscene is also a hint

i lost my mind when someone told me that no, Krauser is not from an older game, they just talk about him like you should know who he is even though you super don't

Krauser is a real motherfucker to try and fight with your knife in his final form, though. And you still have to stun him to be able to shank his ass, so you'll need some firepower. Or just do it like I do and rocket-launcher that fucker.

Yeah you're just supposed to accept that between RE2 and 4, they worked together in some capacity. Then later you kill the shit out of him.

RE4's development had so many false starts before it got made.

One of the early versions became the first Devil May Cry.

Another early version had it's map assets used to create Haunting Ground (aka: Good Doggie, the Horror Game).

I don't think the stuff with Leon on the zeppelin was ever used in another game though.

Granted, it's not the first time early versions of a Resident Evil game never see the light of day (ie. that whole "Resident Evil 1.5" thing).

This is actually one of the things that makes the TMP so good—it has its limitations in terms of pickup efficiency, but no other weapon comes anywhere close to being as good for causing stagger and getting you melee hits for a very small damage investment

Also if you follow the rule of not reloading before you buy a capacity upgrade, you can get hundreds of rounds for it for free from the merchant.

the only room I actually want the tmp for is the hive in the castle because all the flying shits die to any damage

otherwise I don't feel its doing anything I can't do with a handgun and I throw it in the trash where it belongs

The hive? Run straight back out the doors into the hallway, and jump through the broken windows right there on your left. Then just pick the Novistadors off with whatever weapon you like, they can't get through the window to you. Note, there's a lso a red herb out there, and if you walk along the balcony, climb up the ladder, and walk around the upper curving balcony there is a treasure chest with another Novistador eye lantern in it, and even a doorway into the hive room where you can look in and jump down into the room to if you want.

Also, don't forget to destroy the hive, when it crashes down from the ceiling it leaves 6-8 Novistador eyes, and usually at least one blue one.

The TMP is excellent for melee stagger and for putting out a ton of damage on single enemies that really need to die right that second. Minibosses and bosses are practically made for it!

Like I know it's not the Striker, or the Broken Butterfly, but boy howdy do I like the TMP. I've only used it on two playthroughs because I was a real latecomer to the idea of using it, but it was really nice the last times I played both Normal and Pro!

This is why I ended up going 180 on Hunk in Mercenaries Mode. I hated him at first until I realized this, and then was chain snapping necks with him and it became awesome.

I personally feel like every weapon has a use in Resident Evil 4, sometimes dependent on playstyle, and/or mode you are playing. Its the first game I ever loved enough to 100% (Gamecube version). I did multiple playthroughs, switching up the weapons each time. My favorite though might be the recovery playthrough, where I played it like the old Resident Evils in that I only used the weapons I could get without purchasing it from the merchant. That was a lot of fun.
