Rapid drop of my Xterra 2003 model Rpm

I drive an Xterra 2003 model, just recently, I noticed that my Rpm drops to below 2000 when its in motion and can't fire up above that even when my leg is still on the gas pedal. It causes the car to annoyingly slow down to the point of crawling. Please what can cause such problem

    It sounds like it's in some sort of 'limp-home' mode. You should get it looked at by a qualified technician.
