So! Time to talk about the best and worst of the lower rung of the food chain.

Deep dish pizza made of hot dogs?
Bacon wrapped and fried Twinkies?

Whatever your guilty pleasure may be, let's discuss.

I've been trying to eat healthier lately and would currently murder someone in cold blood in front of their own family for a big greasy deep dish pizza

Jack in the Box and Snoop Dogg are partnering to launch a "Merry Munchy Meal" in Long Beach, CA next month to celebrate legal recreational marijuana. It's a $4.20 combo that gets you:

    - 3 chicken strips
    - 2 tacos
    - 5 mini churros
    - fries
    - onion rings
    - small drink

If it's popular it's going to roll out nationwide.

The house was full of glue smell (hey let me tell you about how much kitchen renovation SUCKS but for the sake of my blood pressure please don't actually ask me about it) so we decided to go out for dinner and I finally got that supreme pizza I have been after since before christmas.
This place's standard supreme is pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and to that I had them add ham and black olives. Next time I am thinking +bacon also.
It was so laden with stuff that in spite of my hunger, I could only eat two slices. We ate half the whole thing between the three of us, so we have another half for leftovers.

Next on the list, in no particular order: the buffet at the indian place, and jalapeño poppers.

I think we're also rearranging plans we had for tomorrow with one of mom's friends so that we are maybe having thai, which is a new thing for me, so that is kind of exciting.

    Anyone had omurice before?
It's like. A pile of friend rice and they get a slightly runny omelette and put it on top and cut it open and let it plop and then put... Sauce of some sort on top?

I found out the farmers market has a vendor that dies one soooo that may be breakfast tomorrow

I saw an episode of some travelling/food show on TV, and it was mostly just a montage of the omelette getting cut open

    It was borderline fetish porn

    The sauce is Demi glace

Omurice is super common Japanese kid snack fair. It's crazy delicious. I make it sometimes in a simpler form with spam fried rice.

i've made some really nice japanese rolled omlettes called tamagoyaki, but i've always wanted to learn how to make the really runny ones, or at least find somewhere good to try one

  • jgeisjgeis Registered User regular
I've followed recipes for omurice that use ketchup in the sauce/rice and that never tastes right. I need to find a can of that demi glace sauce. It shouldn't be too hard to find in LA, there are a lot of Japanese markets out here.

I mean it's just fried rice in an omelette. You can use any kind of fried rice you like.

Here's a scene from an extremely good Japanese food movie called Tampopo about omurice

Finally abated my curiosity and clicked on this thread and a little sad that these are just food threads, with how every thread in Se+ becomes a food thread, I always had a feeling this was a secret other topic.

Bad food thread, I was grocery shopping earlier and I saw this and immediately said "AUUGH". Then I thought, "this is perfect for the Bad Food Thread".

    Orange Cranberry ......... Hummus

I guess we can be thankful, at least, that it's not Pumpkin Spice.

A blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves that is pleasing when paired with a wide variety of foods?

Yeah I definitely don't see the issue with pairing it with chicken

Also dessert hummus is ... a thing, though not something I've ever been into. Hummus and pomegranate is totally traditional though.

I have a hard time associating "pumpkin spice" with stuff that I've only experienced savory, since it tends to only be used here in the context of desserts and sweets. It's also got a very specific flavor profile for me that I can't imagine working well on its own with a lot of stuff? Like....cinnamon and chicken sounds awful to me.

But then I know that cinnamon as part of a larger bunch of herbs and spices can be delicious with chicken, but it just makes me think of like...putting a sweet spiced cake on chicken.

If it helps, a lot of Chinese cooking will use cinnamon with chicken, as does Moroccan food.

All that said, I wouldn't buy any of that crap because it just screams "marketing gimmick" rather than "actual food we have thought about".

Yeah, I mean garam masala also (sometimes? Always?) contains cinnamon, and I goddamn love chicken tikka masala. But I would not go near any chicken (or salmon, good lord) that was labeled "pumpkin spice".

I can guarantee you, especially in the US, this will often not be a savory thing, but they will try to shoehorn the traditional "sweet pumpkin spice" into things that are not meant to be sweet...because yeah, it's a gimmick and I don't think they care too much about how these things actually taste.

  • KetarKetar Registered User regular
Cinnamon can absolutely work with chicken, as tynic pointed out. Chicken bastilla is delicious, and that even has powdered sugar on there in addition to the cinnamon.

The pumpkin spice blend is something I associate entirely with sweet things and bad choices though since it's been pushed on to just about every food product you can possibly think of in recent years, and the idea of pumpkin spice sausages is totally unappealing to me. Though not quite as unappealing as that pumpkin spiced salmon.

My wife and I had dinner at a very fancy restaurant a couple of days before Christmas, for our anniversary. When the dessert arrived and our server starts with, "This dish is inspired by our pastry chef's favorite drink - a pumpkin spice latte" my eyes almost rolled out of my head.

That deconstructed pumpkin spice latte was pretty damn delicious though.

Bad food thread. I am glad you're back. I ate a ghost pepper about 4 and a half hours ago. And while I originally thought they were tolerable if too spicy, now that it has begun digesting deeper in my belly -- I know the truth of capsaicin cramps.

I don't think these are suitable for any recipe -- short of for people who wish to do themselves direct bodily harm.
