Rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS on PlayStation 4 system introduces the awe of its unforgettable world and towering creatures to a new generation of gamers, while allowing long time fans to revisit the beloved masterpiece with unparalleled visual fidelity and improved performance.
Tales speak of an ancient realm where Colossi roam the majestic landscape. Bound to the land, these creatures hold a key to a mystical power of revival – a power you must obtain to bring a loved one back to life.
SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS is a breathtaking journey through ancient lands to seek out gigantic beasts. Armed with only a sword and a bow, explore the spacious lands and unearth each Colossus, presenting a unique challenge to test your wits, determination, and skill.
Shadow of the Colossus is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Bluepoint Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It is a remake of the original PlayStation 2 game using ultra-high definition art assets. The remake is led by Bluepoint, who developed the earlier PlayStation 3 remaster, with assistance from SIE Japan Studio. The developers remade all the game's assets from the ground up, but the game retains the same gameplay from the original title aside from the introduction of a new control scheme.
The gameplay will be similar to the original version of the game, according to hands-on previews. Progression through Shadow of the Colossus occurs in cycles. Beginning at a central point in a landscape, the player seeks out and defeats a colossus, and is then returned to the central point to repeat the process. Most colossi are located in remote areas, such as atop cliffs or within ancient structures.
Players will be able to choose from several options when playing the game. On a standard Playstation 4, they will be able to play at 30 frames per second. On a PlayStation 4 Pro, they will have the ability to play either at a 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, or at 60 frames per second at a 1080p resolution.
Sony announced a remake of Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 4 during their Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017 press conference. It will be released on February 6, 2018. The remake is led by Bluepoint, who developed the earlier PlayStation 3 remaster. The idea for a remake came after a conversation Bluepoint developers had. They wanted to create a new definitive version of the original game, and after speaking with friends at Sony Japan, they were on the same page as Bluepoint. Bluepoint producer Randall Lowe and technical director Peter Dalton said in an interview with Game Informer that the original Shadow of the Colossus is on many of their employees' Top 5 of all-time list.
The developers remade all the game's assets from the ground up, but the game retains the same gameplay from the original title along with the introduction of a new control scheme. The game uses the original codebase from the PlayStation 2 game. The art staff used the PlayStation 2 to create parity with the PlayStation 4 version.

You're in luck, @Klatu they have! I heard them mention in a recent interview that the original control scheme will be available, but that they've also included a new set of controls that are more palatable to modern audiences.
...I'll still end up buying it.

I just want like... more, not another remake. A Colossus prequel where there's tons of them running around and there's a different thematic message. A team up game where you play as a Colossus and a smaller partner (since the dev LOVES team up games). Something fresh.
If you're gonna do all that work may as well do Ico too.
(Though I'm probably just biased because, while I love 'em both, Ico is my favourite.)
SoC is undoubtedly more popular than ICO. I can imagine them revisiting ICO if this one does gangbusters, and at 40 bucks I don't see it not.

Honestly the first trailer from I think Paris Games Week or Playstation Experience I was kind of underwhelmed; that forest redo though? Holy shit. This looks amazing and I do not think "Greatest console remake" is any kind of hyperbole. This thing looks insane.
-This is currently preloaded onto my PlayStation 4
-I have never played Shadow of the Colossus
I’ll, uh, let you know how it goes.
I'm so, so excited for this. Since last year, open-world and long-distance traversal on horseback - through gorgeous maps and landscapes - has been my absolute jam (Zelda, Horizon, Witcher, BF1). I watched a buddy play through a bunch of SotC back on PS2, but I'll be playing for the first time, and something about the "ride across this desolate, beautiful world" thing is speaking to me in a huge way.
I am pumped. Preordered last night.

. . .and that 60FPS really makes the game pop. So glad I never finished this thing.

I never picked up a PS3, and this game was one of the reasons I still have a PS2. I took down a few colossi not long ago, and was still in awe... I am so ready.
Ive also got a friend who played through Ico and Last Guardian but inexplicably missed SotC... Should be interesting to hear someone's fresh impressions on the game. My raging nostalgia has me a little biased.
I still don't recall being frustrated with controls. The less you try to wrestle with Agro the better, he tends to find his way easier without you tugging the reins all over.
Also I wonder if you can still...
Speaking of I love how Bluepoint did not try and make him more "accessible."
I spent forever scouring the map for little Easter eggs or tie ins to Ico. Then started climbing everything I could just for the view... Really no other game has inspired me to go outside more, which is maybe kinda weird I guess.
I know the
I believe there's a camera setting to pull it in from the Digital Foundry video
The art design is terrific. Graphics aren't always face-meltingly gorgeous, even on my new Pro, but my jaw has already dropped a few times when approaching sun-soaked cliffs and whatnot, and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the world.
I eventually made it up, but it felt like I was glitching my way over it.
I took longer on that than I did to kill the colossus.
The controls are a bit tricky, if you hold the analog stick in any direction while trying to climb up to a ledge, you won't climb up you'll try to jump instead. If you want to climb to something higher, let go of the stick and press X.
I streamed the first 4-5 Colossi last night and had a blast, the remaster is gorgeous. Controls still feel a little weird but overall better than they used to. Then again, it's been like thirteen years.
I looked this up. Supposedly they have added some number of gold coins to the game you can collect? And the credits have some reference to a youtuber maybe? Interesting.
Hysterical. I knew what was coming, and yet... it was more beautiful than I could have imagined. I had a similar physics "issue" this morning, but it was about 1/10,000th of that. Still, it made me giggle. Spun way, way too fast (and way too many times) in the air.
Man, I'm not sure I've ever heard of a remaster having fuck-ups this bad. Maybe I'm being naive, but it seems like this kind of thing should be pretty easy to avoid in the context of remastering an existing game, vs. releasing a completely new one?

I agree that a straight remaster shouldn't be introducing bugs and weird elements. But this game is essentially a ground-up remake, from where I'm sitting.
I still get impressed when I see them do the sword launch in the original game, this could lead to some really impressive shit.
Was the music purpose written for visuals just like this. Meme-y things flying through various vista's...'cause it's perfect.
Which from what I've seen is either an instant kill sword, or at least a 'kill a weakspot in one stab' sword.
I looked at some of the comparison shots I unlocked and phew! Original SotC does not look like how I remember it... :P
Also I remember that bird giving me fits back when I first played the game, and I was dreading fighting it. Killed it in one go this time... very quickly too.
