When you are dealing with 1k plus pound animal doing intricate motions there is a non trivial chance for something to go really badly and if you wind up underneath said animal it is unlikely to end well for you. Unlike snowboards horses have minds of their own so there is always the X factor of the animal spooking or reacting to something unexpected can end really badly for rider and horse.

About the only thing that bothers me is that she managed to go to enough competitions to qualify for the Olympics but never seemed to develop any skill or ability to do tricks. Eddie the Eagle might have sucked, but even a shitty ski jump is still pretty impressive. Tonga guy managed to not come in last. Try and put a little more effort into things than just showing up.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

I figured such things were more to blame, that while injury might be less frequent it might be decidedly more gruesome. What with ton of flailing beast involved in the injury.

man whatever, she skied down that halfpipe better than i fucking would have been able to.

obviously it's ridiculous but good for her, she still did it. they just gotta tighten up the rules.

Just look at christopher reeve he was a really skilled rider but he got thrown once and fell bad and wound up paralyzed. I am not minimizing dangers from snow sports but the way the lady in question was going she was unlikely to ever be in much danger. Still I don't have any major beef she found a loophole and used it so she could say she was an olympian. She spent a great deal of money to do so in venues that probably overall helps the sport by supporting the competitions and events with her entry fees. There are always a couple odd balls like this every olympics.

Canada not even gonna make the playoffs in women's curling.

    Women's curling
I feel for them but this is one of the worst performances I've ever seen at a competition like this. Worlds, Olympics, you name it. I hope they can save some face with the remaining games because this is hardly a showcase of their talent.

Homan's 77% for the tournament. The team is 81%. Not great, but South Korea's 78% and their skip is 78% too. It's just a little baffling how every time Homan et al. miss, they miss spectacularly and in the most critical of situations. You know, double/triple-takeout on their own stones, missing barely guarded knockouts TWICE in the 11th end, baffling strategic decisions.

I don't know where else to find stats sadly.

The takeaway though is what my friend was commenting on when we were chatting this morning: the women's stats SUCK. Like, not just Canada but all the teams in the tournament. Barely anyone breaking 80%.

I have no idea wtf is going on.

Early in the tournament wasn't there chatter about the sheets? I don't like blaming the tools but when everyone is off their game maybe there is something?

Then again the men's stats don't look too bad :/

CBC's website had full match by match breakdowns.

I watched about half of Homan's games, and the only explanation I can wrangle is that the misses were really bad at critical times. Often game-losing misses or end-throwing misses. But ... I'm not sure that wasn't the case for other teams too, since I didn't see all their matches and even when I watched them play, it wasn't with the same critical eye.

It's just a little puzzling to me how their accuracies are all so close together yet outcomes so different. I guess that points to strategic errors being the major issue?

    Nosf wrote: »

Uhhh, I don't know if you noticed, but the South Koreans already have a pretty good women's curling team.

  • kaidkaid Registered User regular
Yes when the accuracies are almost the same a lot of what is winning games is strategy and when you are missing. The top teams don't miss much but you miss the wrong shot at the wrong time and it can end your match.

  • shrykeshryke Member of the Beast Registered User regular
But the top teams were missing a bunch was my point. Their stats suck. All of them. They are barely breaking 80% at a top level international competition.

Why Homan was sucking so bad in particular is less the point there then that the entire women's field was kinda sucking.

Anyone watching gold medal women's hockey?
they should absolutely allow the US and Canada to use the body more. These women aren't delicate flowers, practice all the time with men and obviously want to do it (looking at the Canadian penalty just now). allowing it wouldn't turn them into goons and it would show that the "only men can hit" thing is a stupid throwback.

Edit: these games should be required watching for how to play positional hockey. It's like a textbook.

I am expressly not watching the game because I know the officiating will infuriate me. It always does for USA-CAN women's hockey. The officials from other countries are just in over their heads.
