2017 GOTY Results! (click to see detailed vote breakdown)

(Previous Game of the Year results: 2016, 2015, 2014)

Likely not surprising too many, this year is finally the year for Nintendo! Only time they've had a game in the top 5 during my tenure running the poll was 2014, with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at #5.

While last year had some great games, it's a little more interesting this year not having the top 10 be all "(PC,PS4,XBO)"! :rotate:

Where it counts the most we (overall) voted correctly! Yaaaay.

Although, like Giant Bomb's Abby Russell, I would also say "Cuphead should be higher!"

Edit: As a whole though this is certainly a very good list.

Heh, so the lowest one of my played / rated games came in at was The Mummy Demastered at 121. Not terribly attached to that game, but I'm kinda sad that Etrian Odyssey 5 was just shy of being in the top 50.

    Nier Automata was robbed.
Agreed. Also Mario Odyssey was the equivalent of Oscar Bait but for video games.
    I'm just kidding everyone.
Except about Nier: Automata being robbed, it really was.

A Super Nintendo game making the top 100 games of 2017* is pretty awesome.

Uncharted Lost Legacy at 44 makes me sad, it was wonderful.

Then again I'm a huge uncharted fan. I'll have to pick up some of the top games I'm missing.

So basically this is telling me I should pick up a PS4 to complement my Switch.

With those two, you could play all of the top 10 except for Cuphead at #9. Switch and XB1 gets you 7 of the 10, but missing #3, 4 and 5. PC instead of XB1 gains Nier.

Thanks for putting this on again! Man, I've been voting in these for a long time.

Cheers to the five other guys who put Night in the Woods at the top of their list. I'm still pleasantly suprised at how well it did, though, I thought it was a little more esoteric than that.

More people really need to check out Divinity: Original Sin 2 too, it's a crazy good WRPG right up there with Baldur's Gate II and the first few Mass Effects and such in my opinion. (Also, is Andromeda actually worth playing? Seems a lot higher than word of mouth would have me believe.)

I'd also encourage people with PS4s to check out Lost Legacy. Yeah, it pretty much is "just" more Uncharted, but you might be forgetting just how good those guys are at combining good story telling with what appears to be technical witchcraft in the graphics/visual polish department.

Still, Breath of the Wild is a really solid pick. Always fun to see the community results.

Gosh. I was the only person who voted for 18 of the games in my own top 20. And I played 3 of the games in the overall top 20, but didn't put any of them in my own top 20.

Thanks again to everyone who organised this! And everyone who voted too, since the results wouldn't exist without y'all. I can't help but notice the number of voters is dwindling a little every year this is held, so next time I'll try to push this a bit harder amongst my friends and in other communities.

Fuck yes, Yakuza 0. I'm glad I wasn't the only person who voted that as #1.

I was literally the only person to vote for Lone Echo, Robo Recall, and From Other Suns, so I guess I should also revel in my disproportionately large influence on the top VR games list. Hey, Oculus, start sending me free stuff if you want any of your exclusives in the 2018 list!

Surprised that PUBG wasn't top 10, and even more surprised that ARK is not only out of Early Access but finished out of the top 100. I guess that's the perils of a long gestated early access game losing its hype.

Oh, and I guess I have to play a few more 2017 games at some point.

Andromeda is vastly better than word of mouth would have you believe. I think it's a little low on the list. Some people bounced hard off it for whatever reason, but it's a terrific game.

There are legitimate complaints, but the overall impression was soured with a lot of targeted alt-right shenanigans due to the game's inclusive approach, making it seem that much worse at a casual look. It had launch issues, but nothing abnormal for this era of games.

Similarly, I have no idea how Horizon keeps getting rated this high. I don't understand how anything apart from the visuals and lead character appealed to anyone. But fun is really subjective, and for whatever reason pretty much every mechanical element pushed me away something fierce. Its story is really bad, too, and it's weird that it gets praised while Andromeda's story gets criticized. Andromeda is hilariously better written, at least in the first 5 hours (can't compare beyond that as I didn't finish Horizon).

How odd. I'm of the opposite opinion. As a huge ME fan, Andromeda was disappointing technically and narratively. I found the story in HZD to be super intriguing. I was constantly thinking "Why is this the way it is? I need to know more."

Also, Andromeda literally killed Mass Effect. So it's got that going for it, which is nice.

No, it really isn't. Even if you look past all the glitches and animation issues and dumb internet furor, it still never rises above mediocrity in anything it tries to achieve.

I appreciate Andromeda for all the entertaining videos and commentary that resulted from it, but in terms of being a video game it looked like an absolute train wreck.
The dialog is terrible, the characters severely lack character, the voice acting ranges from uneven to atrocious, the faces for main characters and their expressions looked goofy as hell, saying that its technically a mess is a huge understatement, both the side the missions and main story looked really uninteresting, and that game having development problems is constantly and painfully made extremely obvious.

And its jarring that the entire crew and basically everyone else is so star fucked about you being a pathfinder, given how worthless the lead comes across. Whoa, you're a pathfinder? We can do anything since we got a pathfinder! Gosh it must be so great to be a pathfinder! Where would we even be without a pathfinder?! Luckily the game lets you know the lead is a good pathfinder because about five super convincing "We got this!" assurances are either made or available to make as dialog options within about an hour worth of playtime early on.

Turns out the ultimate path was that of a dead franchise and multitudes of disappointed fans, but you certainly can't say EA didn't find it.

Most people are of the opposite opinion. I'm still trying to figure out some of the "why" for me here. Like, I know why I hate Horizon (and love Andromeda), but I don't know why these issues aren't bothering much of anyone else. The issues are comprehensive enough that I can't find any other angles for enjoying the game apart from how pretty it all is. But clearly lots of people do, which means I'm the one missing something.

    Regarding the gameplay
Part of it is the Dark Souls effect, I think. I've heard the "Dark Souls has ruined other games for me" commentary before, and maybe Horizon is the first case of that landing for me. The dino fights felt tedious and familiar instead of fun and new, and killing most of them with the spear wound up being a perfectly solid (if boring compared to Souls) strategy. I absolutely hated the healing mechanic, trudging through an otherwise pointless open world just to find randomly-scattered healing herbs; just let me bonfire and recharge without wasting my time. And the perk trees were probably the worst perk trees I've ever seen in a video game, with 75% of it being stuff that should have been unlocked at game start and the other 25% being boring stuff. It was shockingly lazy.

The other upgrades were similarly shoddy. You can get a bunch of upgrades to your maximum ammunition of various types, which are almost entirely worthless because at any point you can pause the game and craft dozens of ammo. The only upgrades that matter are for your maximum materials, and of course those are some of the most frustrating to upgrade.

But given that ammo-gathering was also as tedious as healing herbs, I got to the point where I just started killing everything with the spear so I didn't have to bother. When flying robots started appearing, I just started running away from them (which worked perfectly). I shut the game off for the last time when I reached a desert and some giant bot came from the sand underneath me, automatically hitting me and inducing a 5-10 minute time cost in terms of healing herb recovery. I was literally laughing out loud at how terribly the whole thing was designed as I shut it off.

That's not even getting into how awful the human battles are, but that at least is something I've seen media coverage of in general.

    Regarding the story
It really captured me at the beginning. I cared about the main character's relationship with her foster father and the angst of her growing up and moving into a place where he couldn't be. And then they took the entirely predictable but extremely lazy way out of killing him off (maybe he didn't actually die as I didn't finish the game, but it was still an eye-roll inducing event, clearly intended to keep them from having to deal with the player hanging around and talking to him later in the game).

I got over that with the story that unfolded in the village, with Aloy trying to prove herself to the tribe, having some budding rivalries and friendships, dealing with some clear discrimination. It felt very human, and I was totally invested in Aloy's attempt to grow into this new life. So of course the game immediately repeated itself by killing off everybody you'd just gotten to know before it finished exploring any of those ideas or themes. Again.

At that point I felt the game was not going to be operating in good faith and instead would just give me a set of weak excuses to move forward instead of growing attached to any particular place or people. I was no longer connected to it at any emotional level, and it became just another video game story with that classic, cliche line of being as important to the game as the plot of a porn flick.

Finding out it was set in post-post-apocalyptic Colorado was just the icing on the cake of stupid. I can't imagine caring less about what excuse they came up with for how our future selves destroyed the world, given that I've seen dozens and dozens and dozens of examples of that in media already.

I haven't played a lot from this year but I would be surprised if there was a game that presented its story better than Cuphead.

That song is so damn good! The intro also makes Mugman a character of Shakespearean levels of tragedy in the space of such a short time.

I actually went back and looked at some of my old top 10 lists from previous years- I'm really glad that we wait to vote until the end of January now. A ton of good games were way lower than they should have been on my lists (or not even on it) because I didn't have enough time to play them.

    Nier Automata was robbed.

I respectfully disagree. This was finally Nintendo's year and it was a long time coming.

One things for sure, this was a GOOD year for games. That list is just loaded to the brim with great games.

    And Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Yeah that threw me off a bit too. Probably because I pretty much despise all games on smart phones and blame them for some of the mess we're in now with AAA full priced games. Although technically I guess they all are mobile games.

The top 20 list is pretty damn stacked with great games. I guess I really should get around to playing Nier Automata. As soon as I am done hunting all the monsters.

For better or worse, at its core Andromeda is recognisably more Mass Effect, which is what people were hungry for since the end of the original trilogy in 2012-2013.
If I wasn't such a massive fan of the franchise I wouldn't have even placed it in my top ten, but it had enough going for it for me to power through its many and varied deficiencies. There are definitely Mass Effect elements to enjoy and I really hope they get another crack at it later on with a more cohesive, focused team.

Honestly I'd also really love to see that list separated out into Mobile and 3DS/PSVITA.
