Apparently SEN, a manga artist who is a huge fan of Shazam and posts fan art of him frequently is going to be doing at least one back-up feature in Shazam #1.

Jack Kirby's style was pretty much perfect for comics, he could be detailed or simple depending on what was needed. The shift towards realism has hurt comics and artists imo.
I normally don't prefer realistic art in superhero comics, but Sejic's style really works for me.
I do not know nearly enough about art criticism to be able to articulate why, though. My gut tells me it's something to do with the shading and the way he draws faces.
There are a ton of modern artists who work is very detailed and varying degrees of realistic that I love to death
I think what hurts comics the most is how the bland, almost style-less, form of realism became the default for comics and what a lot of the (obviously still talented because making a comic itself requires a good deal of skill on its own) less high profile, workman artists shoot for.

He can totally keep faces from being as stilted as a lot of the more representational artists manage I think. There is just enough exaggeration to keep them out of the uncanny regions and be more expressive at once.

Monthly comics just are increasingly a bad thing for artists I think
Jack Kirby could write and draw 4 monthly books and still had time to have Stan Lee take credit for all his work
The expectations of detailed rendering and coloring have changed greatly.
You know, I'd have agreed if you had said this about anyone BUT Jack Kirby. Have you seen how detailed his stuff can be?
It's not expressly down to how many lines on a page. Like it's down to how the image is actually constructed. A lot of his stuff breaks the rules on perspective and anatomy. And there are loads of rendering shortcuts and heavy inking to streamline the process, which he'd frankly have to do. Granted with a lot of purpose in many cases. And it generally fits with the bombast he's working with.
Though I don't think that looks sells in a modern context. Or at least the Big Two seem to not think so. We definitely err more on the heavier side of representationalism. Or what most wanna call photorealism. And that requires a lot more foundational work on the page. It's also a lot easier to catch the shortcuts that a lot of people use to make it possible in a monthly schedule ie poser or tracing.
Jack Kirby's talent is not necessarily being the best at drawing, it's being able to create evocative images quickly where you can't see the gum and strings holding it together.

Re: Sejic, kinda what was coming anyway. He already said that Odyssey was the last thing he would be doing where he wasn't also the writer. I'm hoping that his work at DC will give his creator-owned projects a boost though (still sad about the way Death Vigil was forced to end).

Her tumblr and pixiv are 99% Shazam art
I wish I loved anything as much as she loves Shazam
She also did the Japanese translations of the new 52 Shazam mini, Gotham Academy, and Grayson as well as the DC Zoom announcement art

Has he said anything about continuing Ravine? I really liked that.

He wants to, but it sold really, really badly, he said in 2016 that he would give it another shot (now publishing it more like Sunstone outside of the direct market), but he has said earlier this year that Ravine died due to low sales. I don't think he did anything for volume 3 apart from some sketches, but I'm not on his DeviantArt, so can't tell for sure.

I get it, but it really sucks, since Sejic was, like, 70% of the reason I was getting that book.
But I like Williamson a lot and dig how weird that cast is enough to still be fairly excited

yes
its still not what people are doing now
jack kirby is an incredible artist but he was not expected to put the level of photorealism and detail into his art that is now common in comics
