You mean the gun companies who are getting unfairly blamed for this?

"I'm kind of surprised it happened here, but I'm not really shocked," 17-year-old Ryan Kadel told the Post. "School shootings happen all the time, and then the news just forgets about them."
That's one of the students. That's where we are as a nation. School shootings are looked at as 'just one of those things' that you have to deal with once in a while.

It's messed up but people can get used to ANYTHING, no matter how horrible it is, especially if it's something that seems impossible to change without a literal miracle. Getting any decent gun control in the U.S would require a major overhaul on the very culture of large parts of the country, and where do you even get started with something like that?

wouldnt even fuck with the culture, you just have to get over the fear mongering that any gun law is gonna result in black helicopters comin ta take their gunz

Then again, thats hard to do when comments like "I'd rather see every child in America shot dead than have my second amendment rights tampered with" show up 15 minutes after the news breaks

I don't mind that shit cause at least it's honest. It's the horse-shit where people deflect from the issue or offer sympathies and do nothing that are just aggravating. You know you don't care enough to do anything so just stfu.

At least when O'Reilley came out after the Las Vegas shooting and shrugged and said "That's the price of the freedom to carry guns" he was being honest about what the gun-rights position actually is instead of trying to obfuscate that shit being ideas he didn't really believe in.

And thats not the price of freedom.

That, and this, and every other shooting, is the price of having a government thats too afraid of a minority of gun owners and the radicalized NRA to do anything to protect their own citizens.

I'm not saying theres a magic panacea that will get rid of gun crime in America, but there is so fucking much that can be done, without infringing on the average persons right to have or use firearms, that would at least start reducing mass fucking shootings down to single fucking digits a year as a fucking starter.

But cant do that, because our politicians have been bought out wholesale by special interests, and wont do anything that risks their bribe money flowing.

It just makes me so irrationally angry I could scream.

I was actually in a gun store a few days ago, with some co workers during a work trip, and it is amazing the variety of firearms that I reckon everyone could keep using and still allow us to have reasonably effective gun regulation. There's shotguns, revolvers and all types of single shot rifle. They seem to be amongst the most popular guns, and I was hard pressed to think of anything reasonable you couldn't do with them.

There are even pellet guns, for those who want fully automatic action. Firing little 2g metal blobs. Lots of fun for shredding paper targets, not more than a nasty bruise for a person downrange unless it gets them in the eye.

So what is the problem here. Gun companies don't seem at risk of bankruptcy because most of the guns they sell aren't super lethal in a mass shooting environment. Target shooters can still target shoot. Hunters can still hunt. People who want you to think they have big old penises can still buy a 50 calibre magnum revolver with a long barrel. Who are these gun advocates protecting?

So it turns out quite a few or the kids who survived this are politically astute, articulate and 100% done with this shit.

    Video from CNN

    Video from MSNBC

Tweet from a survivor responding to one of thousands of “show some respect and don’t talk about gun control” tweets

Also it appears the NY Daily News have said “fuck it” and have spent the last few hours tweeting every piece of pro-NRA legislation voted for and every NRA donation received by every Republican offering “thoughts and prayers” and similar platitudes.

So apparently based on what I heard this morning, the school may have messed up the emergency procedures. The policy for a shooter was supposed to be (according to a teacher at the school I heard on NPR this morning) that they announce a Code Red schoolwide first, and then start the fire alarm.

What they actually did was start the fire alarm, announce for everyone to evacuate, and then some time later (a few minutes? time enough for some people to start exiting the building, but not every class had started leaving yet) announce that it was a Code Red. The teacher on the radio grabbed whatever of his students hadn't left the building yet and brought them back into the classroom, turned off the lights, etc.

Apparently one other teacher did the same thing. Started evacuating, heard the Code Red and brought everyone back in. This teacher was killed before locking down the classroom...

The confusion was exacerbated by the fact that they just had a fire drill earlier that morning.

I don't know when they learned it was actually a shooter though or if they initiated the initial fire alarm.

(Keep in mind that even though most of this is coming from statements of a teacher who was there, it's still just the next day, not all of this may be accurate.)

~Edited to improve phrasing a bit.

You could probably halve the gun murder rate in the USA with sensible gun control, if the NRA suddenly got raptured (reverse raptured?) You probably couldn't get it down to UK or Japanese levels, due to culture.

This is not the gun control thread. Take it over there, unless you have somehow become banned from that thread, in which case you are somewhat out of luck.

I thought I heard yesterday the shooter pulled the fire alarm.

Honestly monday morning qbing a shooting situation feels like victim blaming in a bad way. The problem is not the schools response to the shooter, its that there was a shooter in the first place.

Agreed. I posted that just to update what I heard, and to kind of think through things.

It's not the school's fault for not responding perfectly. It's a situation no one should have to be in. Given that we are in this situation with way too much frequency, I am just trying to think of what other schools can do to prepare better. Sorry if I phrased things badly that made it look like the school should be blamed, it's early morning and this is an icky situation.

Unfortunately it seems clear that the only way we can break the back of the gun nuts is to slowly make their hobby frustrating to do and annoying. So we need to pass every conceivable legislation at the local level to make owning a gun frustrating, expensive, annoying and useless. Just like we did with smoking, and then, once enough people have stopped doing it we'll just ban it entirely.

I think owning a .50 caliber long barreled revolver would upset liberals as well. You can even paint an eagle on the side of it.

Her account's been deleted (as opposed to suspended, so it was probably her making the call).

Given it's Twitter, it was almost certainly because of the flood of abuse she was receiving; I saw the original tweet earlier there was some serious radioactivity in the responses - the usual invective, threats, etc.

I gotcha, wasn't going after you specifically, just never been a fan of "what can victims do to be less of a victim" when in an active shooter situation at a school or fucking anywhere that you're in a situation like that means whole things have gone fucked.

Also, there's been a slippery slope of what is considered "white" for a long time. The Irish weren't considered white. Then when other minorities made inroads, suddenly they were. Same with the Italians.

They just pull in the next closest skin tone when their numbers get thin, so they still can claim the majority.

People will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to claim moral (and electoral) majorities. Look who the "family values" evangelicals saw as their standard bearer.

If the Irish and Italians had not become "white" then the country would have become majority minority before any of us were born.

Look forward to the next thirty years when certain types of Latinos get to join Club White (my money is on Cubans being first) in order to keep the "majority" alive for a little longer.

Regarding the school's response, they didn't know there was a shooter until after the fire alarm evac started, IIRC.

And regarding Cruz surname.... Hispanic people can be white... and a Cruz may not even be Hispanic... fucking hate that this is a thing which needs typing.

Actually they started openly saying "when it's time to kill them and remove the stain of [word salad]" shortly after the Green Eggs & Ham Speech and it was blatantly obvious that this man fantasized about killing and made death threats against other students. See also his posts on /physicalremoval

The thing is Cubans will never become really white. Even the model minority treatment grated. Trying to make Rubio happen is why the GOPe lost to Trump. They are openly telling their children and churches that it's time to get ready to kill the rest of us in the name of word salad.

Man this whole thing is so fucked up. This was my hometown, at my rival high school. We made fun of it for being the sinking school (it sinks about a centimeter a year). One of my friends knows the coach who died protecting students, and another friend as of last night wasn't able to get a hold of her daughter who attends the school (I don't have an update as of yet). It makes me so incredibly furious that nothing is going to be done about this, yet again.

Edit: Update: That friend found her daughter, but their friend's daughter was fatally shot.
