How long of an answer do you want? Serious question

Why is melee so popular anyway? I've heard stories about GameCube controllers becoming harder to find and that'll effect the scene somehow?
because there's no shortage of marks who think they can win against the only 8 people who place in melee

1. It's super fun to play well from a manual standpoint.
A good chunk of the fun for me in fighting games is how cool it feels to have my hands do all this dexterous shit and have it translate to something awesome on screen. Melee is chock full of that. You have to combine a lot of non-obvious mechanics that require a lot of precision but it all feels really satisfying to do.
That's where your second question comes in. The entirety of the controller thing is that there were gamecube controllers of all manner of quality and parts manufactured. Some of them have control sticks and shoulder buttons that are much more 1:1 in terms of what you input. So like 20 years or whatever into this game's life, people have gotten so good to the point that being able to get what you want in those tiny little microsituations are genuine game-changers.
There is actually a software fix that someone made (UCF/Universal Controller Fix) that makes it so every controller has the same values for those things (I do not understand this wizardry) and it's slowly being adopted across the scene. So controllers won't really be such a big deal in the future.
2. The way the game is structured with hitstun and knock back being determined by what percentage coupled with the fact that the one being attacked has influence over where they're going leads to a lot of unique situations.
Just how precise the game is coupled with the fact that it's extremely hard to replicate situations in tournament matches keeps things fresh. There are some guaranteed sequences and characters with limited set play, but by and large you're not gonna see the same thing over and over every match between top players.
People are still getting better and perfecting things and finding out new strategies and shit.
3. The documentary. The doc is a pretty fun watch and coupled with the Evo donation drive ended up giving the community a lot of validation. It was a perfect storm of attention that snagged a shit ton of people into things. My first experience with smashers was at Evo 2013, and I did not understand why they were screaming nearly every time anyone got hit even if it didn't seem to lead to anything. I did, however, respect the passion.
They've got their own history and legacies and storylines as a community, and I found it waaaaaaaay more interesting from 2015-16 than I did any traditional fighter. I don't watch anymore but all I watch now is basketball.
You take a bunch of nerds who already liked a thing and then show them they can go do this nerdy thing with other nerds who are pretty open and accepting (of men) and be validated for, they're gonna take that opportunity.
And it's a fun game that feels good to play.

Is there anyone interested in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection who doesn't already have SF4? Because preordering SF30th on Steam, PS4 or Xbox gets you a digital copy of USF4; preordering on Xbox also gets you a copy of SSF4AE, which is backwards compatible on Xbone
The funny thing is, Potemkin STILL isn't what most people would call "good" in Xrd! He has the possibility of exploding you instantly, but he's not legit good like he was in GGAC. He's by some estimations "alright".
.... which tells you the kind of BS that's around in Xrd that a big beefy dude who can literally kill you in two combos with almost no resources is just "alright".

I dunno how we ended up with 2 of these but I closed the other one
So: Noctis is hella fun. The only thing that sucks is everyone on earth also thinks Noctis is hella fun, so tk is basically Noctis mirrors as far as the eye can see right now.

Who cares what he looks like, he's got a fullscreen whiff punish, the biggest homing move in the game, a fucked up oki tool that picks up nearly everything, an unparryable low, a counter on par with Geese's, a + frame normal hit launcher
He could look like a dancing pecker in a cowboy hat with those tools and I'd still be all about it

playing at the online/casual/local level is akin to playing pick-up/community/d-league sports vs pro sports
they aren't playing thinking they're gonna win the tournament
they want to play in a tournament and then watch the spectacle on sunday
like many people who play fighting games :surprised:
And I mean let's not act like most top 8/top 32s(hell top 128 in SFVs case) aren't mostly full of familiar faces.

This game is already fun to watch.
The hitstop on GI is so dramatic, it feels like it's going to stop your heart. They definitely learned some Tekken lessons!
