To me the point of this comic is that there's a bunch of people on the internet going off about how Ready Player One is just a stupid mashup of old things to prey on nostalgia and that's so unoriginal and awful and you should hate it. But what if, I didn't hate it though.
Like, you can dislike it for that reason and not go see it but I'll probably watch it eventually.
Ready Player One has a lot of shitty toxic masculinity within it, and I sincerely doubt the movie scoured it all away
the HEY GAMERS REMEMBER THIS?!?!?!?!?! is just pathetic
Not just masculinity either. It celebrates multiple nerd toxicities. Shitty gatekeeping based on extremely specific taste, valuing trivial memorization of information over even basic communication and human interaction skills, a complete refusal to engage in a critical understanding of literally anything
oh definitely, it's just a big heaping ball of stupid shit
like I can understand liking a thing with problematic elements, but there's a point where I will judge the fuck out of someone
Ready Player One is closer to the latter end of this scale, imo
to use a metaphor, it's like health regulations for pool water - there's only so much fecal matter allowed in the pool before it's considered unsafe, and if you're someone who knows that number then you have to live with that knowledge

That's what baffles me. On top of all the problematic stuff, it's badly written and offers very little incentive to pick around all the toxic parts.

Yeah, I gave up on the book pretty early. The movie might be a cool visual thing to see on the screen but I doubt that's enough to get me to the theater.
I remember watching the trailer and trying to figure out how playing a video game stops what looks like an actual military from utterly curbstomping you in real-life.
That pink cartoon cat was wearing a name tag and service industry uniform while slumping on a couch playing games. That really speaks to gamers. Gamers like me, and you. Us gamers.

I've never gotten the impression 80s or 90s pop culture nostalgia was a character trait comic Gabe particularly had
Comic Gabe has a Pac Man tattoo and nearly exclusively wears Pac Man shirts.
ok that's a fair point, but comic gabe has never shown any signs of nostalgic fanboyism for anything OTHER than pac-man either, that I can remember
And Star Wars nostalgia. And Star Trek nostalgia. And old video game nostalgia. The character may not be ABOUT being an 80s/90s kid, but it's woven throughout.

I'm not it's target audience, but I'm actually OK w/ Ready Player One existing. Let Gamergaters have "their" movie so they can stop crying that nobody makes movies exclusively for them anymore. I mean I'm sure they'll still claim there's some conspiracy involved when it inevitably earns less money than Black Panther, but what-evs.

Titanic grabbed on one set of heart strings, Ready Player One another, Old Yeller another.
The difference between and something like 21st Century Birth of a Nation, is the integrity and honesty in which they do it.

If it still has his art style I don't see that going very far. Though apparently 26 people are determined to prove me wrong thus far.

Given that I can think of at least three PA comics that are much more emblematic of a mid-life crisis than seeing RPO, I can't say the same.
And RPO irks the hell out of me.

How or why?
That is some SERIOUS blue balls.

Mother.
Fucker.
Because his Patreon incentives aren't sketches or other tangible artworks for his subscribers.
It's the opportunity to watch him draw. Or ask him questions in a Google Hangout for one hour. The latter is a $20 privilege.
I mean, that's a pretty common thing for art patreons. I'm subscribed to several and art streams for donations over a certain amount are not unusual.
Sure, but they actually produce stuff to watch them draw don't they?
