[March For Our Lives] Not a gun or school shooting thread
Portugal The Man will be playing at the end of the Portland March, which is cool. I think our Senators may have stayed in DC, Merkley was hosting some students there.
From yesterday in DC, but this is usually the prepwork saved for Independence Day million people attending sort of crowds. More than usual Inaugurations. Good on these kids.
Was at the march in Madison. Large crowd, but a very cold and hard wind made me leave early. I didn't need frozen tears on my cheeks because god damn do these kids know how to write some powerful speeches.
Just minding my own business sight seeing in Rapid City, SD and we noticed a ruckus across the street:
I might get better pictures after lunch. There’s a few counter protests and one rolling coal truck with don’t tread on me flag. Pretty sure it’s the same guy every time I see it haha.
Boston here. I didn't get to the March itself, which started down in Roxbury, but made it to the rally at the end point on the Common. Some counter protesters set up early but the main event has a sound stage and some serious speakers so they're basically completely drowned out even without the crowd noise. It's really kicking off now, thousands of people here and more coming in every second.

Paul McCartney is out there marching, invoking the memory of John Lennon. Good on him, I say.
There's some poignant signs coming up from this.

Apparently Parkland students are wearing badges that have $1.05 written on them, which is the amount of money per student Marco Rubio has received from the NRA.

A lot of folks were in DC.

And now Team America's "freedom costs a buck o five" is in my fucking head. Which makes it much more surreal

I'm waiting for official numbers / estimates but the word on the street is that in DC, the protest crowd is bigger than Trump's inauguration. Which is absolutely a point that needs to be stuck to him with. Meanwhile, six hours ago he landed at his stupid golf resort yet again while this stuff is going on.

I saw a bunch of these and wasn't sure what it was about! Good to know!
So for stuff that matters, sorry Sir McCartney but this day was about the kids, I would say the hardest speeches were Zion Kelley and Edna Chavez. Zion lost his twin to gun violence here in DC. He was so hard to listen to, how he could talk about it was amazing. That is so crazy.
Edna Chavez lost her brother in South Central LA. She is a powerful speaker. Just fantastic. And the call out of the lack of attention to areas that are mostly PoC and the violence in those areas was super important. She was fantastic, if you can find her speech online I recommend it.
Another good one was a 16 year old girl from Chicago. She told the story of how she witnessed a store robbery, was threatened by the robber with the gun, and saw the store clerk shop over basically fucking fritos. They had multiple speakers from Chicago who have lost family to gun violence there. Powerful stuff.

The DC crowd gets noticeably more compact when you get closer to the capital building.
I think the best part about this whole movement is that it's being framed as belonging to today's kids. Not only is that an effective tactic to persuade parents, but also I imagine it helps the most in building support for the movement among that generation in social media etc. They're going to be voting very soon, many of them in 2020.

I would argue that the young folks aren't being greedy about today and welcome everyone who is or knows victims of gun violence.

All the speakers are kids specifically because it is their day. I was there. I don't think I saw anyone who was over 18 talking. Today is their day. They organized. They are speaking. They are the story. And they should be focus.
The performers are not so much but that is how it is.
The kids may not be greedy but I think we should focus on them. They are the real stars, the real story, and the ones leading this.

Mazzyx McCartney isn't out there like "THIS IS ABOUT MEEEEEEE." He was asked a question by the press who then moved on from him. The dominating factors in the news about this are the kids and their speeches. Me mentioning McCartney was one single beat to a whole musical sheet of kids being awesome.

I am more cranky at the news, not you. And I know why he gets picked out of the crowd. Don't get so cranky about it. In my mind, he is another old person in the crowd nothing more.

Why are you doing this? Me responding is not automatically a sign of crankiness.

It is both amazing what these kids are doing and shameful that they have to.

It makes it a lot harder to dismiss I think. Because they are themselves the potential victims being threatened.

I'm confident in their ability to do what's needed as they get older. At this point the rest of us should be supporting them along the way, rather than try to lead them.
Attending the protest in San Francisco. I see a sign that says “Should I write my will now?” on one side. The other says “Who gave you the right to end my life.”
Emma Gonzales stood silent for six minutes (the length of the shooting).

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

Portland march was quite peaceful and went well. A pizza shop we went into to use the bathroom didn't get the memo, I guess. They only had two staff working. Yikes.
