    That was some good salvage.
Killed a Dragon pilot, cored a Cataphract, Thunderbolt and Hunchback.
I already have 2/3 of both the Dragon and the Cataphract.
Might as well grab all 3 parts of the Dragon and the single Cataphract part..
aaand RNG gives me the other mech parts and the only ++ weapon in the loot table, niiice.

Destroying bases is fun and profitable.

Tips for Smithon? Trying to kill the truck and save the crates seems a lost cause. Even with my 3 heavies, I get overwhelmed by the 6 lights, 2 mediums, 1 heavy + towers. Hell there seems to be a sniper tower half way across the map that can hit me. I could probably do 1 or the other, save the crates or kill the trucks. Are either worth it?
Use the terrain. Sprint to the left, kill the turret and light mech there, hide behind the turret hill while the trucks spawn. Kill each after they move once and put themselves in your LoS. This keeps you out of LoS of the main force and turrets so all they can do is use indirect fire and also baits the mechs into bunching up around the middle ammo crate.

I picked this up on a recommendation from a friend and after significant reading I am doing much better in the campaign. One thing I am not really sure about though is what is the best option for the negotiate option? Early game I seem to really want money, so should I just crank it up to full money rewards?

Generally I weight towards salvage 90% of the time

This is obviously with caveats. As a rule of thumb I ensure I'm getting paid around the 100k mark to cover potential repairs, but the thing with salvage is that you have much more flexibility as to what you can do with it compared to just going pure c-bills. Even the shittiest mechs you can salvage sell for an easy 100-200k C-bills, and if it's a mech that you want, even more valuable
This is also completely dependent on how comfortable you are in your salvage game

I was under 1mil in the bank for about 1 and a half months at the start and it's been nothing but an upwards trajectory for me since. I'd say going pure bank for the first few starting contracts is perfectly fine ofc just to get you out of the red

It's nice to walk up on an enemy standing vigil, watching one direction, and you just pinpoint your shots in a burst to take out their arm from perfect health.

    Re mission: Extraction
Go with Kamea to get Alex out, but it's a massive trap by the Cousin. How the hell is one supposed to hack this? It's like a 3 stage mission, and all of it is borked.
The first section seems broken, telling you to "engage the escorts before they get to the refueling stage" which seems impossible. The heavy vehicles at the checkpoint always engage, even if you're out of their sensor range. I even burned 3 or 4 turns and the fucking things turned around and came back down from the north!
And then you get ambushed from multiple directions, and THEN you have to go stand within a tiny compound and get ambushed AGAIN and survive 5 turns of 6-8 mediums and lights from all sides! All this on top of Kameas fat ass atlas being hot trash, and she's got no defensive skills. The AI just focus fires her to death every time, and there's nothing I can do about it. I can't hide, because I'm stuck in the compound, and I'm basically required to brace her in cover, which takes a third of my firepower away. I'm at the end of my second run, and each time has taken more than an hour. I'm starting to get pretty salty at this.

So I just finished up the Extraction story mission.
Wow did I ever screw the pooch on that one. I had the Atlas with me of course. Brought along the Star League Highlander too, my missile boat Orion, and lastly the Battlemaster I recently salvaged.

The Battlemaster I replaced a pair of MLasers with more heatsinks, and upgraded the other 4 MLasers to ++ variants. Stripped out a ton of SRM ammo, replaced the Machine Guns with SLasers, armored up a bit more. And then I made sure the PPC got replaced with a +4 ACC version.

So, my first attempt at the mission I tried to crest the hill in front of me ASAP. I quickly found myself getting hit from all sides by turrets, reinforcements, etc, etc, etc. Kamea in her Atlas was down to 2 HP in her CT, so when I embarked on the back half of the operation, the Commando that spawns on the road immediately cored her.

Ok, trying again. I just walk along the road, kill all the turret generators, kill all the vehicles, kill all the escorts, kill all the reinforcements, barely moving from the chokepoint northeast of your start location. The worst damage is the PPC Carrier strips the armor off the Battlemasters arm, leg and cockpit! Damn near took it's head clean off.

Back half of the mission starts again, with everyone relatively OK. The Battlemaster loses it's PPC but aside from that doesn't take too much more damage. The Atlas takes a pounding, but never gets anything going internal. It's mostly just me standing and coring mechs as they come. One thing I didn't notice was the "Get 4/4 Mechs inside this area" from the Rally at Building objective shrank when it converted into a Protect Building objective. So after I murdered everyone, I had to get all my mechs back inside the area and pass for 5 turns. And make sure nobody was parked under where the Dropship lands.

All in all, I'm increasingly less of a fan of all these Priority Missions where the key is having tried and failed, and now you know how yet another ambush goes down, making it much less of an ambush.

    Only in MWO moments:

Just spectated a guy on my team (after my Mad Cat Mk2 got cored out because my team blocked me off in front of an enemy assault firing line) in a Kit Fox. Nothing too special with that in particular...but the thing that caught my eye was that he was exclusively running in 3rd-person. I was about to ask why, then I looked at his loadout:

    1xLAMS
    1xATM3
    ECM

Then it all became crystal clear why he was in 3rd-person the whole time... :rotate:

Question on the contracts list. How far out from your location show up on that list?

I’ve yet to just jump somewhere. I just find the the best mission nearby and take it and go from there.

Secondly, is there a map yet with a general sense of difficulty?

I followed the listed contracts exclusively until just recently. I'm wishing I'd struck out on my own more often.

The travel contracts exists to help you get back to the priority location if you are broke. They aren't even the best contracts near you I think. I've frequently gone to virgin planets I've never seen before and find 3 amazing missions that I can just knock out back to back for quick cash.

So yeah, don't be afraid to just go somewhere and see what's there. I mean, worse case, you can save scum if it's a dud. But I doubt it will be.

The guy had no weapons (didn't even bother firing his ATM3...pretty sure he had it on just so the game wouldn't list it as an Invalid build because of lack of offensive weapons). Even worse, he had the arm that has three AMS hardpoints...but chose to just have the one LAMS. In other words, he was running a brain-dead/troll build designed specifically to be a waste of 30t.

So I had a hell of a time guessing the right settings to modify the emblems to get the Oosik logo into the game. Dunno if anyone else has done it, but here is a download link you can copy right into:
    Steam/steamapps/common/BATTLETECH/BattleTech_Data/StreamingAssets/emblems/player

It will replace the Paradox Logo and you can switch to it in your Quarters on the Argo in game.

Get off to a bad start and you are going to be losing all your money to new pilots and mech repairs and never get ahead of the curve.

Get off to a good start and you are swimming in c-bills and salvage and any meta-campaign constraints become meaningless. I got off to a lucky/good start. I'm two (maybe three? I don't remember) story missions into the campaign and just did some napkin math. I can currently not take a single job for 18 months, a year and a half, in game before my accounts will run dry. That's just silly. I can easily have several missions in a row go belly up and not care at this point. And it is kind of tanking my enthusiasm for the campaign a bit, given how same-y the missions are feeling already and how low stakes they have become due to my bankroll.

I highly recommend doing some light modding.

They recently lowered the store payout from 15% to 11%, so I went into the files and cranked it to 20%.

Then I also goosed it so that there are always more missions available.

3 skull missions are pretty easy milk runs for me now but it still seems like 100% grade A bullshit that a low head hit chance can manage to happen 3 times on the same person....

Poor glitch made it out with 2 health left meanwhile everyone else and every mech barely had a scratch.

    MWO talk time:

So, I've taken my Ebon Jags out for a whirl tonight and I swear there's some weird sound bug or something going on. Two times, on two different maps, I've either had half my mech blown off or, at the very least, severely critted out (armor either deep red or just gone in the front torso) without the game making a single sound. It's slightly disturbing to not hear any impacts or explosions, but then seeing 75% of your weapons are red, look over at the paperdoll and notice that your entire side is just gone.

I am much less cranky after 3-manning a half-skull convoy escort, headshotting a Panther, and otherwise not getting the shit kicked out of me, and in exchange I now have a Panther (Plus another 1/3 of one I think), which after investigation I may actually be mad about, but it's less shitty than the half-wrecked Locust and Spider I just scrapped! Just been watching Beaglerush stream multiplayer with hilarious but effective semi-troll builds.

3xFirestarters with full MGs and JJs can basically not be hit by enough to take them out fast enough (+using terrain properly), basically never overheat even while going wherever they want and firing their full complement, and combined can either together eat out the back armor of any medium or below OR three of them just jump right in the face of anything heavier and fish for headshots and probably get 1-2 which are then easily finished off by the backup King Crab taking a leg and side torso if necessary.

So early on, until you get financially stable, do Restoration missions on their various planets. You get bonus payout for being allied, and you can sell equipment and mechs for more in their stores. Don't forget to sell excess equipment you don't need. If you haven't been, you've probably racked up a decently large number of spare weapons and equipment you really don't need. They don't sell for a ton, but 30 heatsinks at 3k each is still a spare 90k to help tide you over.

Also, just getting the Argo upgrades ASAP more or less pays for themselves in terms of saving you downtime. Early on, my strategy was use the free travel missions to world hop around the Restoration as I cleared each system out. After I got up to two mechbays and a medbay or two and could reasonably stretch my legs a little, I moved into Taurian space and started doing missions there for a bit following the same strategy (clear system, take the best travel contract). Now I've been on a priority story mission grind and I think I'm sitting around 12 million Cbills with the Argo almost done being upgraded.

Also, spam stability damage as soon as you can. You'll find your in mission losses drop very, very quickly after that, and pilot training goes much faster.

Dekker is my number one vehicle killer and second in mech kills only to my main man, Commander Sir Samuel Vimes, callsign Watchman.
I have found myself running one missile boat and 3 close brawlers loaded with either AC20's and mlas or mlas and srm's.
I can core pretty much anything up to heavies with a called shot so battles are pretty controllable.

I have yet to encounter assaults but I imagine that's coming as I keep on the story missions.

    @Rius
It's kind of a bad idea. MGs is waay too close for your mech (and you really don't want to be there because the JagerMech has really weak brawl), and it doesn't have the armor for it anyway. Dump the Support weapons for an additional 2 tons of armor. You especially need to pump up the armor on the AC/20 arm, your right and left torso (especially the torso holding the AC/20) and slightly more armor on the legs and back.

    OR

A much less radical change is to take your stock build, dump the AC/2s for a PPC, more armor and more heatsinks. This gives you better anti-vehicle firepower, better sustain and overall a better mech. A general rule for Battletech 2018 is "The only good boat is a missileboat" since Ballistics are too heavy and lasers are too hot.

Overall the JM6-A is IMHO a better mech. Especially since you can do either Lurm-builds or "The Flying JagerMech" with max jump jets and so many SRMs.
