"Did you know the longest piece of recorded English literature is a Super Smash Bros Brawl fanfic?" Ben from the Breaking Bad Super Mario Bros stream.

I didn't want to believe that so I fact checked and

It’s The Subspace Emissary’s Worlds Conquest, and it’s a Super Smash Bros. WIP (work-in-progress) on fanfiction.net. As of July (2015), the fic is 3,548,615 words long. That’s three times longer than Proust, and six times longer than War and Peace.

Apparently a Teen Titans fanfic is in close competition. This path is when Mario Facts became even darker than Garfield Facts, although that over 1 billion dollars accrued by Garfield merch annually shit is horrifying to fathom too.

I can't help a knee-jerk reaction to this silly fact.
Yeah, but what is the longest piece of recorded English literature worth reading? An unedited stream-of-consciousness fanfic can get very long I'm sure, but is it interesting? If a madman had written ramblings equal to ten times the length of War and Peace, someone would've probably burned it rather than preserve it through history, but it would have beaten the record. What if you wrote a program that just repeated the same sentence endlessly, for longer? Or a very large Lorem Ipsum file?

It was going to do what, die or keep them running? 'Cause MS killed the OG XBox matchmaking servers when it was convenient for them just fine, I don't see why they'd keep supporting older titles from the current generation in a decade's time.
People go "well, you can't expect a company that needs to make a profit to keep supporting stuff indefinitely" and I go "when my property fucking relies on them doing so, yes, I can, and feel they should be legally compelled to do so".

I get unreasonably upset thinking about how many games from the past ~15 years will be literally gone to time, especially mobile titles and MMOs, only available to future generations in the form of crappy screenshots. People wax nostalgic about NES titles from their childhood, but somehow don't draw the connection of "and what if half of those were literally gone because 1992 Nintendo deleted the server software and sued anyone that tried emulating it".

It's always weird when somebody from the site suddenly becomes famous for something else, like when Drew started showing up everywhere as BlinkingWhiteGuy.gif.

Last weekend was the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and apparently, one of the big questions surrounding the event, was who was the mysterious woman in an orange dress, dubbed the best dressed at the wedding.

After a few days of investigation, it was discovered that the woman was none other than friend of the site, Janina Gavankar! It turns out that she is good friends with the now Duchess of Sussex.

So, if anyone was playing Six Degrees of Separation and trying to connect the Queen of England to Dirty Dan Ryckert, congratulations!

Yeah, I assumed that Vogue probably doesn't cover a whole lot of gaming and Star Wars stuff on their day to day, so I figured that was just an error on their part, and not a stealth announcement on a Battlefront movie.

You really don't understand why someone might be a fan of one of the most successful women in entertainment who is known for being extremely charismatic, kind, and charitable?

  • RehabRehab Registered User regular
Her shtick is pretty one note "wackiness" that always looks really forced no matter how natural it is played off as. Jokes that are made by her tend to be the most obvious hack low hanging fruit and they have to be made within the perimeters of what can be said on daytime TV, thereby putting most of them in the same general area as Sunday newspaper comic strip material. When all else fails during a stagnant segment, do a silly dance I guess? Ha, so wacky and unpredictable!

Its just hard to get the appreciation from someone who takes comedy as seriously as Abby does, which leads me to believe its a running joke. Dan liking Norm is completely understandable as he is one of the more underrated comedians out there and doesn't get near enough of the limelight as he should (his video podcast is great though, perfect format for him).

When I worked for a TV station, part of my shift was teh Ellen show.

It was super harmless and non-offensive and occasionally funny. It sorta mutated into "Hey, here's a funny youtube clip" after awhile though.

She's essentially the epitome of an entertainer, which I imagine is part of the reason Abby likes her.

While I'm not saying you have to like her, surely you can understand why a person completely separate from you and your tastes might?

edit: also, I'm not sure I'd call Norm McDonald an underrated comedian. Also, don't forget that Ellen had a show in which she came out as gay and was literally the first person in entertainment to do something like that. Hardly wacky.

Daytime TV is mostly just a bland paste lazily being pumped out that people can get filled up on (if they are even actively engaged, I imagine for many it is mostly background noise).

So treated as a demographic with delicate tastes that you don't want to upset and ratings proof that they can be placated in the easiest manner, I do understand it, but Abby falls outside the demographic of daytime TV.

edit: also, I'm not sure I'd call Norm McDonald an underrated comedian.

If Norm weren't so hard to work with and better at things like remembering lines I think he could break out in a big way doing a late night show or something like what Aziz is doing on Netflix. Him opposite Steven Colbert as host of the Tonight Show would be something to see.

So in a way, I think his being underrated is a result of his own stubborn traits, but I thinks its mostly that network execs see him as bit of a loose cannon they wouldn't be able to control. Things like that limit his exposure to people, which in turn make him less of a consideration to the general public (hence my viewing him as underrated, especially in contrast to someone like Dave Chappel or John Mulaney).

So, daytime TV is like most television, then.

I'm not going to argue that a lot of TV is trash, because a lot of it is, but in terms of scripted one hour dramas, comedies being managed by comedians, and plenty of other things like adult cartoons, we're in something of a golden age of TV.

Ellen was also a comedian before getting her tv show. Considering how many people on this very message board watch stuff like Cheers, Frasier, or Murder She Wrote that were not alive or old enough to watch those shows when they were on, its not hard to believe that Abby, who loves comedy, has seen Ellen's stuff. I'm not a fan of Ellen and I've seen one of her stand-ups, so I wouldn't be surprised if Abby has either.

It really doesn't feel weird to me.

See, and it feels weirder to me because I have seen her stand up.
Would have been best if she stayed seated. Lauren Lapkus she is not. I'm clearly in the minority here though, somehow. Even with humor being subjective and all I just find her to be 2000s and beyond Adam Sandler movie levels of suck. A veritable Nickleback of comedy level "comedian."

That should not be what the kids call "a hot take" by any stretch. But then again, Jeff Dunham had one of the most viewed standup specials in recent history, so what the fuck do I know?

I have only seen the tiniest bits of her talk show (Which does air on Dutch daytime TV)

But I remember well that she came out as gay, and then made her sitcom character gay too.
This was a Big Deal at the time, and we're talking 20 years ago.

According to wiki, the first time it happened in a TV show, and ABC decided to put a Parental Advisory in front of the show as a result of numerous complaints.

And I think that her presence as a talkshow host normalised lesbian presence a lot. To an audience that may not have had a lot of exposure to gay people just being people.

So what if the show is bland and save.

Calling it VinnyStainia is quite inspired, and I guess they're glad they didn't go with CastleVinnya for the name of the feature.

Also Austin was tweeting about how excited he was for VinnyStainia, so I hope he's free today.

These days, Ellen is less of a comic and more of a comedian. Comics tell jokes, while comedians do comedic performances and other vaguely funny things for an audience.

I can see Abby having a deep respect for Ellen's success in the field, even if Ellen's material maybe isn't amazing. And these days she doesn't have to be, since she's a talk show host.
