So You Think You Can Time Travel

You have a time machine.

You can take one trip into the past, which must be at least ten years back.

Your mission: save the Republic, these United States of America, from whatever you consider the current crisis.

What do you do?

The crisis is the slave power was never broken and destroyed. So it's got to be something between 1860 and 1876. The biggest thing I can think of is make sure that Andrew Johnson never becomes president. Lincoln may have been too lenient on the rebels, but he wouldn't have actively supported the slave states. Follow it up with 8 years of Grant and maybe you're getting somewhere.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

Lincoln or Bobby Kennedy gets saved.

I lean Kennedy because I know what happens when Lincoln goes and it sucks but there is no guarantee he does significantly better in reforming the south and mainstreaming former slaves.

Kennedy probably means no Nixon and maybe the GOP doesn't morph into the segregation party in order to grab power.

    1) It's not clear to me that RFK beats Nixon
    2) The Dixiecrat vote is going to go somewhere. It probably inevitably ends up with the GOP.

I travel back to 1990 during George Bush Sr's term and convince Brent Scowcroft to black-bag Osama, then locate several other 9/11 conspirators and disappear them all. The info gets passed to Clinton, and Al Qaida never becomes a thing. GWB never gets a 2nd term and off we go.

Is this just me as an individual or can do I have total history-altering powers? If I have total powers, I convince the Allies to turn on Stalin and invade Russia before they can develop atomic weapons.

If this hasn't been made perfectly clear, advocating violence of any sort towards political figures is not okay. Even with a sparse OP I thought people might understand this thread as a historical exercise instead of an opportunity to talk about murdering judges.

    Guess not.
