With the thunderous news that video games are addictive and therefore no better than uncut heroin, now is the time to throw away your consoles and peecees and embrace the written word. But how will you display and store your books to their best effect?
It'll cost ya. And you want one of those fancy library ladders as well, right, maybe one that turns into a chair like a classy Transformer?
Talk about how cool books are and how stupid video games are.
Ah, well then yeah, that's information I'm happy to share.
Letting people know I've read their thing is like replying without having to reply, and also suggests to them that I'm at least as busy as I pretend to be!
Plus everyone knows the deal with me at this point re: expected responses times
EM: I’m not irritated with you. I’m purely upset with whatever social forces and neuroses compel you (and others) to be thoughtful and allow for this insecurity. Which is funny because normally I am all-permissive and just think, well, I have plenty of things that bother me that others don’t understand. But this one just fills me with disgust.

Messaging platforms are highly regional and terribly fragmented.
WhatsApp is used by americans who are talking to people from Europe and South America.
WeChat is what people use when talking to Chinese folks.
"texting" in the US on SMS/MMS networks is really only something american folks using android devices do anymore; iOS uses Messages which, while locked to iOS users, does lots and lots of the QoL stuff you get from other platforms.
And then there is Facebook Messenger which has quite the toehold as well.
Google Hangouts never got any real traction but there were folks using it and probably still are.
honestly, messaging is a fucking mess.

This is like how all the americans used to AOL when europe used MSN in those hallowed post-ICQ days.

All these messaging apps like WhatsApp are just copies of Apple’s built in texting feature, so that Android people don’t have to suffer so badly having purchased a garbage phone.
The WhatsApp icon is literally a clone of apple’s icon.

which is probably why it has such a foothold in Europe and Asia. Android has a bigger market share.

That’s 100% what happened. Apple created a thing, it was only popular in one region due to market forces, so companies cloned it for the rest of the world.

I'm trying to convert a closet into a reading nook / bookcase but its way more complicated than I expected.

I don’t think people are being serious when they say they’ll unfriend people who use different kinds of phones. It’s okay.
I’ve been threatening my boyfriend for a while but he still insists on these monstrous phones.

I didnt go into this for the phone tribalism, just that its fascinating just how fractured and region-driven global messaging platforms have become.
Apple had the ability at one point to create the next SMS/MMS using iMessage (they talked about making it open source at its announcement) but they didn't follow through, and now we have this mess of different, not really competing protocols that don't talk to each other, along with social media platforms getting into the game as well.

Remember when we all sort of agreed we should stop saying "kill all white people" though
It's not that anyone thought someone else was being serious, it was that it had been ridden so far into the ground that the chance of catching someone on a day where they're already feeling particularly sensitive / attacked was far greater than whatever joy could possibly be derived from being needlessly antagonistic

Man, FaceTime was going to be an open standard too, and it remains the only video chatting service to offer good quality and high reliability.
I’ve heard (very credible) rumors the VirnetX lawsuit basically shut down all their desire to do anything but make a server hosting unassailable RESTful services for their customers only. It killed the FaceTime and iMessage interoperability initiatives.
Just not worth creating broad protocols to help other people if all it does is open you up to lawsuits.

I am v happy with my 6p and more importantly google fi. Dreading the day they announce that shit isn't profitable and kill it. It's definitely the best mobile service I've ever used.
I am trying to remember if people were more or less likely to turn up on time for social things back in ye olden days before texting and mobiles and it's too far back. The mists of time have swallowed my frame of reference.
