So, I've heard a cover of Hotel California on the radio like, 3 times in the past couple weeks, and i'm trying to figure out who on earth did it.

Anyone know?

    The Eagles did the original.

    What genre was the cover?

There was also a Spanish version done by the Gipsy Kings that was featured in the movie, The Big Lebowski.

Pretty positive NoFx didn't do a cover and I'm dubious on Reel Big Fish (although I have heard a Ska cover but it was by a relatively unknown band...possibly "The Skunks"? it's been a while though).

    Wikipedia gives:
    A
few cover versions of "Hotel California" have been released, notably by flamenco band the Gipsy Kings. In 2004, it was recorded by American Idol reject William Hung. Australian band The Cat Empire recorded a version of the song in French (L'Hotel de Californie), for Triple J's Like a Version segment and subsequent CD compilation. Marc Anthony has often sung the song live. Brixton (England) based band Alabama3 also covered the song on their 2000 album "la peste". Country group Rascal Flatts performed their own version of the song at the 2007 Grammy Awards.

I thought Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (featuring Fat Mike of NOFX, which is probably why you thought that) did a cover of it, but it appears they did not. Probably a case of mistaken credit.

According to Wikipedia, there's a ska version by SkaDaddyZ: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkaDaddyZ

This might be the one that I'd thought was done by the Gimmes.

Heh, back in the days of Napster ANY punk cover was immediately given credit to having been done by the Gimmes :)

And I'd be pretty shocked if you recognised Fat Mike in pretty much any of the songs, he's by and large the bassist!

But back to the thread at hand...have we identified it at all? I'd be intrigued myself.

I've heard a live version played by The Eagles on the radio a lot recently. It's off one of their more recent special edition/concert CDs that came out within the last 2 years or so. They had a pretty big live concert DVD that came out a while ago- maybe you can check that?

I found/heard the skadaddiez version, and I dont think thats it. The one I heard didnt have all the brass, but the vocals were near identical, and it had a really long instrumental section at the end.

Stupid question, but could the version you heard be the acoustic version that the Eagles played on their Hell Freezes Over tour/album?

If it sounded like the Eagles, it might have been an acoustic electric guitar. At the end.
It sounds all flemenco or spanish guitary, or whatever.

And if it wasn't really the Eagles, then was it punk and fast? Or rock and slow?
