Animated gif avatar doesn't animate in posts - not sure if bug or feature

My current avatar is supposed to be animated. It does animate on my profile page, but not in thumbnails. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what. File too big?

    If your original is too large and requires a resize, the animation is lost.
