My game won't start.

So I just bought Diablo 2 and installed it on my PC without any problems. When I tried to run the game for the first time the screen went black and nothing happened. I sat there for a minute or two then pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del. Task Manager popped up and said the program was not responding, so I clicked "End Task" and nothing happened. I ended up having to turn the PC power supply off, waited for half a minute, and turned it back on. I tried running the program again and it still won't start.

I've had similar problems with other games, some old and some new. Is this some kind of Windows XP thing or what?

Have you checked/downloaded for patches? Or perhaps checked the Blizzard FAQ for fixes?

Diablo 2 is seven years old. The first thing I would do is run it in Win 98 compatibility mode. Right-click the D2 shortcut, Properties, Compatibility tab. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 98.

    Hope this helps.

Okay, it's working now. I think I just had to download a patch from the Blizzard site. Thanks for the help everyone.

Just so you know, the next logical step after trying end task is going to the processes tab of the task manager, finding the program there and clicking "end process". Actually, when you know the program has crashed, that's usually the first step.
