Finding an apartment in/around KCMO with credit issues

Long story short, my mom utilized emergency credit cards way past the amount I alotted for. However, because credit card companies don't care if it's $20 or $20,000 as long as their name is on the card.

Thus, my credit is pretty fucked. I don't make a lot of money (24,000 net) and can't really afford anything past ~$700 a month due to other bills. I worry the only places that will look past the credit will either be way overpriced or in an unsafe place.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Roommate situation might be your best bet. Craigslist?

You probably qualify for low income and/or subsidized housing. Credit probably isn't going to preclude you from those programs.

I count as low income? Huh.

And the entire point is to not have a roommate. Though I appreciate where you're coming from, spool.

Poor credit may only increase the size of the deposit. It doesn't necessarily mean you can't find an okay place.

I suggest finding places you may be able to afford and giving it a shot before you go down the sketchy side of Craigslist.

I was living in a one bedroom house right down the street from KU med hospital (technically KCKS) for $550 a month and the landlord was pretty great.

Right around 39th street in that area are a bunch of cheap apartments. Never had and crime problems while I was there for 2+ years

I mean, yeah. But sometimes what you want, and what you can do, don't line up. :(

I mean, in my case it defeats the point. I suppose I could always meet my soulmate next week..

I'll keep it in mind, though.
