Our Sunday prerelease got rescheduled to today due to the snow storm last week. Went with Orzhov and got an amazing pool. 4-0, 8-1. Hero plus priest was an absolute beating in my last game. It ended after I wrathed, leaving me with six spirits and five cards to their one spirit in top deck mode.
This game is very good about letting you play for free, but if you are the kind of person who goes "I'll just buy one more draft, that way I can win more gems for more drafts", a person like me, just be careful, ok!
I spent way more than my budget would normally allow. I'm fine. The game is fine. I've adjusted my play style to not allow for that to happen again, but woof.

A good way to play for free is to just complete the daily and weekly rewards. Once that carrot is out of the way then you can feel safe :rotate:.
I'm sure you have some good cards to throw in a constructed deck if you're drafting a lot.

This is how I play. I'm looking forward to drafting Allegiance for gold sometime. It helps that I both don't care about ranked or collecting all the cards, which removes a huge lever to git gud and play anything that isn't free play.
I tend to enjoy constructed more than limited, so I've just decided to sink a big chunk into each new set
I spent some buckaroonies when I got it and when RNA came out, but I've then been able to basically make any deck I want between my card pool and my wildcards
It is much, much more forgiving in this way than mtgo ever was when I was hooked into that hardcore
Once you have a solid collection for a current Standard sets, you can pretty much craft any two decks from the new set for $100, and craft every deck from the new set for $200 or $100 plus consistent grinding.
Expensive compared to other games, but ultra cheap for Magic
I think I just put my last opponent on tilt when I 3-for-1'd myself, spending two cards to kill my own creature so his planeswalker deck sorcery couldn't tutor up his Vraska. Was certainly a lot more timing out happening after that...
I feel legit bad for my last opponent of the night. He's running the first actual Gruul monsters list I've seen all season, while I'm on Sultai. He slams a T1 elf into a T2 Rhythm of the Wild... against my play of 3 Llanowar Elves into a T3 Vivien Reed. And then he stumbles on creatures and I throw out a chump blocker while pulling a Chupacabra, so his big wormy boi doesn't get to kill Vivien.
There might not be a better feeling than sideboarding in Unmoored Ego against jeskai and nailing all four of their Teferis

That feel when your High Alert deck craps itself and you draw nothing but your only 4 counter spells, an omen speaker, and Teferi but your opponent concedes when you untap with Tef in play cause they think you're playing control.

I'm still tweaking it but
2x Resolute Watchdog
4x Dive Down
2x Aegis of the Heavens
4x Surge Mare
2x Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive
2x Omenspeaker
3x Deputy of Detention
4x Sinister Sabatoge
3x High Alert
4x Conclave Tribunal
2x Chemisters Insight (thinking about maybe trying Sphinx's Revelation since that red deck is running around)
2x Azorius Knight Arbiter
2x Teferi, Hero of Dominaria
1x Glacial Fortress
1x Hallowed Fountain
3x Meandering River
8x Plains
11x Island.
I have the worst luck with pulling rare lands and I hate to burn my wild cards on them so I'm sticking to two colors. May drop the Aegis of the Heavens since they were better when I was running Bookcase instead of Tetsuko, but it's still a pretty funny way to kill something on a block.

Awesome, thank you! I'm not winning a ton with my list, I also need duals (i used my cards for like...every other dual) but when this thing wins it's hilarious. The number of times I've swung in for three unblockable on turn three with Tetsuko and seen my opponent's cursor hovering madly over the cards to figure out why they just took 3 unblockable is great. Also surgemare gets a lot of work done, even against mono red where they usually have to blow two cards.
I've been running something similar to your lists and I run into a lot of lifegain decks and pridemates. Those decks tend to go wide with tokens and other lifegain shenanigans. Gonna try out some slaughter the strong on them next time hehehe.
Kind of sucks that the only card good against lifegain is banned in standard.

Yeah Surge Mare is a real MVP. It's really nice if you don't have High Alert down you can still activate it's ability twice and make it unlockable with Tetsuko as a 4/1.
Are some matches disabled atm? I thought I still had time to grind tonight before season end
edit: Yep, sigh basically comes back up just as I gotta crash for tomorrow's work.

I've been posting a lot about Prime Speaker Vannifar over in G&T because it's my favorite great-bad-card in a great-bad-deck and I pointed out that Vannifar is 100% "can I speak to your manager?"
... and then someone else pointed out that Vannifar is 100% Peridot and I cannot unsee.
Arena has been fun. Def still feels like the game is a lot of luck of the draw. Who gets mana, or cards out when, is the winner. I'm playing fairly straightforward and winning 50/50, and there's a part of me that wants to be crushed when I learn a boardgame.

A big part of the new player experience for Arena is to specifically avoid you getting crushed all the time. :P
Playing with beginner decks against other beginner decks is a lot of luck-of-the-draw, for sure. A lot of their strategies are linear and not built to interact, so if your vampires go off better than their merfolk you're just gonna win. As your decks develop they'll be more interactive.
If you really want to get crushed I'd recommend saving up your gold for Ravnica Allegiance gold drafts, which should be out soon.
Arena only bans might not be an awful thing. The way the client handles loops like tucking Teferi or Nexus of Fate is different than paper because programming and thus it might be a thing that needs addressed through a ban.

Arena only bans are fine.
The type of tournament play they are suggesting is fucking ludicrous.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Arena only bans are bad if they're doing it because they refuse to enforce rules or make fixes to let cards be functional in Arena. If it's bans specifically targeted at Bo1, I wouldn't be happy, but since today already signalled they don't care about Bo3 the Bo1 bans wouldn't really be anything but a sign of the inevitable.

You play with no sideboard and instead build two decks. You have to use both decks during your Bo3 matches, but if it goes to the third match you can choose either.

"Duo Standard" if you want to Google up more research on your own. I'm sure that phrase will be very popular over foreseeable future.
The worst part about the new format is you don't even get to deckboard. Like, if it was "loser picks their next deck, winner stays with theirs", at least you'd get to counter. It's literally a coinflip all three games.

i can't believe they copied the fucking shitty ass hearthstone format
Here's the article talking about how tabletop and Arena are intertwined, and how they're different, and the philosophy behind the competitve Arena BO3 format and maintaining possible separate banned lists:
if it were easier to build decks without money investment I wouldnt mind a two deck format but its a pain in the ass and since I play paper I dont want to spend real money on arena
