Just saw Ralph Breaks the Internet.

    Spoilers:
    CRIydaI_d.jpg?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium

I did not care for it! Some very good jokes, but many more bad ones. And it did not even come close to justifying all the screen time dedicated to massive internet corporation logos.

The first movie had many Brands, but told a fun story while riffing on nostalgic characters. This movie spends whole minutes on top of Google Tower during the climax just... because? All we got was a bad joke about how “google” looks kinda like “goggles”. The movie is rarely having fun with these companies, merely showcasing them. It’s a total bombardment.

I just watched Summer of 84 on Shudder, and it was pretty good!

Kind of a more grounded Stranger Things mixed with Rear Window. A group of teen boys in an Oregon suburb suspect their neighbor to be a serial killer who preys on teen boys.

all the people I'd look at and say "I don't think Tom Cruise could beat them up" are professional fighters

like, Tom Cruise probably couldn't beat up Anderson Silva

at the opposite end of the spectrum, Tom Cruise could definitely beat up me and everyone I know personally

You just have to bring the top shelf Tom Booze.

Man, Tragedy Girls and Future Man alone make Hulu worth paying money for.

Not to mention all the King of the Hill.

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

I'd be more interested in a movie set in 90s internet, with characters traveling a magical world of Geocities web rings and looping MIDIs

So, I saw the new Fantastic Beasts, under mild protest, and it's...pretty bad, in general. The big twists don't entirely come out of nowhere, in that the movie takes time to set them up, but when it comes time to knock them down, they still don't really make any sense? There's a late revelation from Leta Lestrange that I still don't fucking understand, that dovetails into the famously dumb revelation that comes by after. It undoes some of the more interesting character work from the main series, seemingly only so that there can be big revelations. It jettisons nearly everything that works in the first one of these and focuses on everything that didn't work.

There are a couple of moments in this movie where something whimsical happens, or the characters from the first one get to meet up and be friendly and charming with each other, but they're so rare that they feel bolted on because they've already committed to using these characters and the actors have signed contracts, because the movie doesn't really give a shit about why these characters are in this movie other than they need to be in this movie.

There are too many characters, and the movie expects instant familiarity with them, so when some random shithead from earlier in the movie shows up, it's like, "wow can you believe this guy is doing this," and I'm like, "yeah, because this may as well be the first goddamned time I'm seeing this person? how am I supposed to know he's not supposed to be doing this" Nagini's screen time is half "here is someone reading a pottermore entry about her" and half "I'm wandering around with Credence, who, by the way, didn't actually die and not a single person seems to realize why?" It's all the more baffling that the movie can't take three seconds to explain who any of these people are, because nothing happens until the end, in which a bunch of characters do inexplicable things for the sake of conflict.

Jude Law is a good young Dumbledore, and Dan Fogler is still weirdly charming and fun when they let him be. He's got my favorite line in the movie, and it's 100% on how he delivers it. It is definitely fitting that they removed the "and where to find them" from the title because the movie is not interested in showing you any fantastic beasts! Anyways, don't go see it, it's bad

Do they at least call the bad guy a fantastic beast, or say something/s are fantastic beasts?

    “Grondlemere! You are a beast!”

    *villain offs an innocent bystander*

    “Yes... A fantastic beast!”

I think I could beat up Tom Cruise right now. I don't think I could beat him up if he had any time to prepare, because he would train harder than any professional fighter just to kick my ass.

It's pretty good, although there was a moment when I thought it was just going to end at the end of the second act

And I would have loved that
Just a whole movie of kids investigating this dude, with a lot of ambiguity as to whether or not they're correct pretty much up until the end, and then they turn their evidence into the police and credits roll

No actual violent encounters, none of the kids are ever actually in danger

The actual ending was still quite good and I liked it, but I think my momentary confusion with how long the movie was set me up for disappointment

As is traditional, I am sick as fuck on Thanksgiving, so I decided to finally watch Mandy while my friends and family were upstairs cooking and hanging out.

I fucking loved it. Perfect movie to watch while mildly delirious.
