Who has the time to listen to music on [Vinyl] anymore?

I figured since I've started to collect vinyl, I may as well share the misery with the rest of you and see if we can't start a little group of like-minded music nerds here on the forum.

For the uninitiated, this is a vinyl record:

lp-vinyl-records-.jpg

They're pretty big. Your parents (if you're old enough) may have had a stack of them when you were a kid, and if your parents were anything like my parents most of the albums they had sucked because their collection was made up mostly of shitty Christian music.

Vinyl went away for a while because people disliked having to carry around massive turntables that skipped whenever you bumped them while they were walking around. Add an amplifier to the mix and it became obvious that vinyl is not meant for portability, as even the most advanced portable record players required a large backpack to carry around and weighed upwards of 75 pounds due to all of the anti-skip technology. This resulted in the general public moving to the convenience of cassette tapes, which could be enjoyed through a personal cassette player that clipped fashionably to your belt.

Survivalists looking for a way to listen to music that did not require electricity were the biggest drive for the revival of vinyl. The oldest turntables can be cranked by hand, meaning that even the most cultured survivalist will be able to listen to Beethoven on an old-fashioned hand-cranked Victrola. As usual, the mainstream trend followed that of the survivalists, although the rest of us have bought turntables that plug in to the wall because none of us have arms powerful enough to hand-crank a Victrola, especially through the long nights of a nuclear winter.

I've got a small collection right now. Here it is.

So what about it, SE++? Are you boring enough to join me on my quest to collect albums on a dead medium?

Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!

I started collecting vinyl because my parents were getting rid of all their records when they moved. I cherry picked the stuff I liked out of it, notably Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Christmas albums and some jazz from my parents. My wife and I got a record player so we could actually listen to these things that were taking up space. They were fun to put on when cooking or having people over so I started getting more on trips to the thrift store or buying them new on Amazon (autorip for the win). Now I've got a collection of oldies, punk and alternative and love it. Love your collection, BTW.

Thanks! I’m mainly trying to build a collection of extreme metal focusing on doom/death/black metal with collections of vinyl from bands I love as well.

I’ve got a pretty good shop nearly that will order in anything they can find and often gets in music that you won’t find anywhere else without a special order. It’s a two minute walk from my office, which is pretty great.

I'm going to take a controversial stance and say that there's no "best" way to listen to music. There's only a person's preferred format. Vinyl has a very distinct sound, cassettes have a distinct sound, digital files have a distinct sound, live music has a distinct sound, it's all about what you want. Vinyl has that great warm and "natural" sound with some fun little quirks and blemishes from being a super analog medium. Digital files can have a super clean sound, great vocal and instrument separation, and higher dynamic range than vinyl, and I can carry around tens of thousands of songs on an SD card in my phone, so that's a big factor as well.

I probably have around a hundred vinyl records right now? I should really catalog them. A big portion of my collection is Depeche Mode singles, studio albums, and a remixes box set. I've also got a decent amount of newer indie stuff, St. Vincent, Father John Misty, Modest Mouse, etc.

My favorite piece has to be the Batman TAS theme song on a bat-shaped record.

    Hooray vinyl thread!

My girlfriend and I have a pretty small collection/have most of them hanging on a wall.

I love listening to vinyls but I love the aspect of collecting my favorite band's artwork almost as much

I bought a special podcast episode on vinyl like four years ago and I still haven't listened to it because I don't have a vinyl player.

That wouldn't happen to be the Tell 'Em Steve-Dave vinyl cast, would it?

I've been keeping my eye out at our local used media store for original vinyls of my favorite albums from ye olden days. With CD and digital copies you can usually only get remasters and sometimes tracks are substantially different, so I like having access to the original cuts when possible. I also have a couple of modern albums, the Transistor soundtrack being my favorite and I'd have a lot more if they weren't extremely expensive.

I’ve been training myself to pick up albums before listening to them. It’s so easy to see an album in a store, hit it up on Apple Music, and decide to buy it from there. Sure, it’s prudent to do so when you’re spending $40 on a record, but it spoils the first listen.

I managed to avoid listening to the new Daughters album before I bought it, but I did have a number of recommendations that made the purchase a good one.

Oh speaking of modern vinyl I am baffled why the Thor Ragnarok soundtrack isn't available. Plenty of other MCU soundtracks are and Thor's felt like it had a lot of 80s influences and would have been incredibly at-home on a turntable.

    I love vinyl!

I'm blessed to have 3 great stores less than 30 minutes from me

I'll put together some pics of my collection at some point. I made a nice record shelf that almost immediately became almost full. I love 80s punk vinyl and early 60s pop

    Edit: real quick though

We have a decent collection and some great local stores, but I hate how hard it is to find local record repair these days.

I kinda wanna take a stab at fixing mine myself (it's started running a little slow) but my girlfriend is deathly afraid of me breaking it.

I have a reasonable collection that I've been trying very hard to add to slowly and not get carried away. I try to be somewhat picky on what I'll buy given the prices of vinyl but I like a variety of stuff so it still seems to grow each month. Most recently I found copies of some horrible local humor called Bert and I that nearly every house in Maine had on cassette back in the 80s.

If you're on the budget-conscious side, see if there's a used record store in your area. My local shop always has an old turntable in good working condition for sale. And check Kijiji or Craigslist for an old amp with a Phono input. That's how I ended up with my setup, and it only cost me about $100.

On the collecting side, I've got records from Zeal & Ardor, Thou, and Anaal Nathrakh on order and nothing in my budget to pay for them.

Anyone need a second-hand kidney? It's 54 years old and has only had two owners. I'll entertain serious offers only. I'd sell you one of my other two but they're in extremely poor condition and I'd only consider parting them out for free.

I live in a major metro area so I do have some good record store options. In fact, the store that I bought a lot of my records from back in the day is now only a few miles from me.

After Xmas has been paid for I should really look at budgeting a setup. Thanks for the info!

I've got twenty or thirty records in the home that i do love to throw on, but the belt on my turntable got jacked up and threw off the speed or whatnot, so I need to order a replacement belt. that happened about 14 months ago, and about describes my relationship with taking care of everything i own

Same here. Right after seeing the movie I went online to look and was disappointed it wasn't available that way as it seems tailor-made for it.

Again, that's not always explicitly true.

Vinyl has quirks and digital has quirks.

Not even close. The signal/noise ratio of vinyl records isn't even CLOSE to what you get from a cassette tape, never mind a CD.

Every medium has its pros and cons and too many audiophiles get caught up in trying to justify their own personal preferences as some sort of broader rule, when the reality is, music and audio in general is too driven by aesthetic to ever be able to fully codify quality.

We don’t need to start arguing about what audio types are better. Those of us in the know are well aware that vinyl is the best.
