More streaming questions...this time with audio troubles!

Hello all! I'm back again with more questions. Much of this stuff is on the outskirts (at best) of my knowledge so hopefully I can lean on the collective expertise here to assist. The short version is this:

the setup: I've been running a podcast/talk show/whatever on twitch. The person I am doing this with joins a discord call and we kinda just right in. My side is mic and earbuds connected to on desk speakers which run to my PC. The other side is on his laptop with an earbud/microphone combo (as in a single accessory as opposed to mine being independent). Stream is being recorded in obs which has my mic pumped up a lot so I don't need to scream into the mic. However the desktop audio has no filters or anything applied to it.

the issue: there is some kind of high pitched whining noise that is present when the other host speaks....sometimes. Due to the inconsistency it is tough to determine if it is interference or what. I can post a link directly for an example if people want. We have had only one episode where he wasn't on the laptop setup and instead was using the discord phone app and i don't believe there was any problem but that was a few weeks ago so I can't really remember. I've always heard these periodic issues, and also parts where his audio would pop or cut out so I am leaning towards it being a levels issue in obs? I don't see his audio spike into red but mine does constantly and although I am louder there aren't any issues with this weird noise when I'm speaking. Since people had previously commented about my audio issues (low volume) in early shows I had incorrectly assumed that everything else was fine (AKA no one was hearing this high pitched noise except me), clearly that is not the case.

I'm going to try to run some tests to replicate the issue, but it doesn't seem to come up every time my counterpart speaks so the inconsistency is making it tougher to troubleshoot. Anyone out there encounter similar issues before?
