Audio editing: clean endings on very short clips

Specifically Windows system sounds. How do you make a very short sound clip not seem to cut off abruptly at the end, in the audio equivalent of walking into a wall?

You abruptly drop the volume at the end of the clip (all the way to zero). Sony Acid Pro, for example, does this by default for all the clips used in the project solution.
