The new forums will be named Coin Return (based on the most recent vote)! You can check on the status and timeline of the transition to the new forums here.
The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I'm going to be starting a new Wow guild soon and I'd like to put together a site whicih will mostly consist of a forum, with a front page for "news" posts and such.
So two questions:
1. Can anyone give advice/recommendations for a web hosting service? This will be a small guild, so not a ton of people visiting the site.
2. Can anyone explain to me how to set up a forum once I procure said webhosting? I know you have to set up a database or some such thing, but I'm pretty hazy on the details. Once it's set up I have a good handle on admining it, as I've done that before in a previous guild.
siteground.com uses the fantastico plugin which can auto configure a PHPBB forum and Word Press blog system, and you really don't need to know anything about databases, just what the password is, which you can get from the CPanel.
I use SiteGround. They are "alright" They give me a lot of bandwidth and space.
The only thing I don't like is I only have one MySQL database, so all my stuff goes in one dbase I have to keep track of table names and stuff for all of the applications I make, but you probably won't be worrying about that.
Also, their tech support is lame, but you can't have everything.
Their domain name management system is stupid. Basically I bought these two domain names and for some reason they weren't working, I contacted them thrice and it took me 3 months to realize that they don't E-MAIL you customer service responses, they put them in some sort of account inbox that they don't notify you if you got a response in.
I found out they weren't working because they charge you 10 dollars on top of the cost of the domain to point it at your site basically, which is a ripoff, but I'm too busy to move all of my shit over to a new host at the moment.
But really, in your case they would make the whole forum/front page thing really easy for you, assuming they are in your price range.
If not, just look for a host with "Fantastico" as a feature, that tool does lots of neat auto-installer things.
