Goose! and YaYa Present The Oscars Pool for 2019 or the Into The Spider-Verse Hope Thread

YaYaYaYa Decent.Registered User regular
edited January 2019 in Social Entropy++
hello, movie lovers

you may have heard that the Oscar nominations are out, celebrating some of the best of 2018's movies, before the awards on February 24th at 5:00 PST

there's been no drama about the ceremony which really will be okay without a host, absolutely everybody is happy with how the nominations shook out, not one of the frontrunners is problematic on every single front, it's all fine

but the important thing is, despite all indications to the contrary pre-Golden Globes/Annie nominations, Into The Spider-Verse has a real shot to win Best Animated Feature, and we are going to spend the next month and change keeping that hope alive

let's all be really nice to each other while discussing movies, try and remember the difference between sound editing and sound mixing (editing is the choice of sound and mixing is how that sound is presented in the final product), justify our random guesses for Best Documentary, Short Subject, and try and win some prizes!

@Goose! has the submission form ready to go here: https://goo.gl/forms/f1sQ74v45YrJe9ox2 , please fill it out carefully

and, most importantly:

THE PRIZES
@Goose! and myself are going halvsies on a free six months of AMC A-List, AMC's Moviepass-esque program that works way better and probably won't fold in the next week

if anyone wants to submit a prize, shoot me a PM and I'll add it to the post

here are the nominees!

Since I do not have an AMC theater, when I win, I will be giving the prize away

my love of the costuming in black panther is directly conflicting with my love of the idea that suicide squad has more oscars than the entire mcu and clouding my judgement

What do folks think would be a good prize for this? I'm considering tacking something on, but my main impulse is to just send whoever wins a DVD of my favorite movie of the year, which I don't think would actually appeal to most people involved.

It is a goddamn shame Hereditary didn’t get any love from the academy.

My picks are extremely cynical and I hope I'm completely wrong about every single one.

So what’s the deal with all the noms for A Star Is Born, including best actor for Cooper but not a best director nom?

It's going to win Best Song and that's it.

Well... I'll give Lady Gaga a chance.

It will be a damn shame if anything but Spider-Verse wins that category.

And I loved Isle of Dogs.

Right I’m not saying it deserved those noms, but if people are going to burn all those slots in a bunch of categories on it, it seems odd that the person who made the movie doesn’t get a nom for director. Not a biggie, just an oddity.

It should win, but I'd bet on either of the Disney sequels taking it, because of how Animated Picture gets treated.

The voters have admitted that they don’t give a shit about the animated feature category and they just vote based on what their kids/grandkids saw.

Fucking Animated category. I'm pretty sure Spider-Verse would have gotten a Best Picture if the Academy didn't have a closet to shunt all those scary cartoons to.

All awards will be shown live after backlash
The organisers of the Oscars have reversed an earlier decision to hand out four awards during ad breaks after facing a major backlash.

The presentations for live action short, cinematography, editing and make-up and hair were to be streamed online in an effort to shorten this year's TV broadcast on 24 February.

Just under a week to get your prediction in!

The vast majority of the movies I voted for I've never seen or even heard of. Just like most oscars voters heyoooo.

    *cough*.
I watched spiderverse, and voted for it.

Yeah I usually never see any of the big Oscar contenders so I just vote for the ones I liked and rest easy that they will never ever win.

Submitted my entries. I totally picked Black Panther and Spiderverse for most of them because they're the only ones I watched, besides Buster Scruggs but I did not like that thing, and I have no regrets about it.

  • ph blakeph blake Registered User regular
Submitted mine. I neither looked at any awards forecasting nor actually watched any of the nominated movies (I sadly fell off seeing new releases this year), which I guess makes me just as qualified as the average Oscar voter and I have this in the bag.
